1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Judeans. 2 The same came to him by night, and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him."

3 Yeshua answered him, "Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom."

4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?"

5 Yeshua answered, "Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’ 8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

9 Nicodemus answered him, "How can these things be?"

10 Yeshua answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things? 11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness. 12 If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. 14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. 18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. 19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God."

22 After these things, Yeshua came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them and immersed. 23 Yochanan also was immersing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were immersed; 24 for Yochanan was not yet thrown into prison. 25 Therefore a dispute arose on the part of Yochanan’s disciples with some Judeans about purification. 26 They came to Yochanan and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, he immerses, and everyone is coming to him."

27 Yochanan answered, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. 31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness. 33 He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. 36 One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."

1 Certa noite, um chefe religioso chamado Nicodemos, um fariseu, procurou Jesus: Mestre, todos sabemos que Deus te enviou para nos ensinares, e bastam os teus milagres para o provar.

3 Jesus retorquiu: Digo-te muito seriamente que, se alguém não nascer de novo , não poderá ver o reino de Deus.

4 Que queres dizer com isso?, exclamou Nicodemos. Como pode uma pessoa voltar para o ventre de sua mãe e nascer outra vez?

5 Jesus respondeu: O que tão seriamente te digo é isto: aquele que não nascer da água e do Espírito não pode entrar no reino de Deus. Os homens só conseguem reproduzir vida humana, mas o Espírito Santo dá vida espiritual; por isso não te admires de te ter dito que precisas de nascer de novo.

8 Assim como ouves o vento, mas não sabes donde vem nem para onde vai, assim se passa com aquele que é nascido do Espírito.

9 Que queres dizer?, perguntou Nicodemos.

10 Jesus respondeu: Então tu, um respeitado mestre, não compreendes estas coisas? Estou a dizer-te aquilo que sei e que vi, e, contudo, não queres acreditar em mim. Mas, se nem sequer acreditas em mim enquanto te falo nestas coisas que acontecem aqui entre os homens, como poderás crer se te falar de coisas celestiais? Pois só eu, o Filho do Homem, desci à Terra e voltarei novamente para o céu.

14 Assim como Moisés ergueu no deserto a figura de uma serpente, assim também eu irei ser levantado, para que todo aquele que crer em mim tenha a vida eterna.

16 Deus amou tanto o mundo que deu o seu único Filho para que todo aquele que nele crê não se perca espiritualmente, mas tenha a vida eterna.

17 Deus não mandou o seu Filho para condenar o mundo, mas para o salvar.

18 Para os que confiam nele como Salvador não há condenação eterna. Mas os que não confiam nele já estão julgados e condenados por não crerem no Filho único de Deus.

19 E são condenados por a luz do céu ter vindo ao mundo mas eles preferirem as trevas à luz, pois só fazem o mal.

20 Eles odeiam a luz celestial porque querem pecar nas trevas. Afastam-se da luz com medo de os seus pecados serem postos às claras e sofrerem castigo.

21 Mas os que procedem bem procuram a luz para que todos vejam que estão a fazer o que Deus deseja.

22 Depois disto, Jesus e os discípulos saíram de Jerusalém e ficaram durante algum tempo na Judeia, baptizando ali.

23 Nessa altura, João Baptista não estava ainda preso. Baptizava em Enom, perto de Salim, porque ali havia água em abundância, e o povo vinha ter com ele para ser baptizado.

25 Um dia, alguém começou a discutir com os discípulos de João acerca de questões relacionadas com a purificação.

26 Foram então ter com João e informaram-no: Mestre, o homem que conheceste do outro lado do rio Jordão, aquele que afirmaste ser o enviado de Deus, anda também a baptizar, e toda a gente vai lá ter com ele.

27 João esclareceu: Uma pessoa só pode receber o que lhe for dado do céu. O meu trabalho é preparar o caminho para aquele Homem, para que todos o procurem.

28 Vocês próprios sabem como eu sempre disse que não sou o Cristo. Estou aqui para lhe preparar o caminho.

29 As pessoas procuram, naturalmente, aquilo que mais as atrai - a noiva vai para junto do noivo. Os amigos do noivo alegram-se com ele. Ora, eu sou o amigo do noivo, e o seu triunfo enche-me de alegria.

30 Ele deve tornar-se cada vez maior, e eu cada vez mais pequeno.

31 Ele veio do céu e é maior do que ninguém. Eu sou da Terra e o meu entendimento limita-se às coisas terrenas. Ele fala do que viu e ouviu, mas são poucos os que acreditam nas suas palavras! Os que nele crêem descobrem que Deus é a fonte da verdade. Pois esse, o enviado de Deus, fala as palavras de Deus, porque o Espírito de Deus está sobre ele, sem medida nem limite.

35 O Pai ama o Filho, e deu-lhe autoridade sobre tudo o que existe. E todos os que crêem nele, no Filho de Deus, têm a vida eterna; os que não crêem nunca participarão da vida eterna, antes a ira de Deus permanece sobre eles.
