2 o God, met ons ore het ons dit gehoor, ons vaders het ons dit vertel: 'n werk het U gedoen in hulle dae, in die dae van die voortyd.
3 U self het met u hand nasies verdrywe, maar hulle geplant; U het volke kwaad aangedoen, hulle daarenteen laat uitspruit.
4 Want hulle het die land nie deur hul swaard in besit geneem nie, en hul arm het hulle nie die oorwinning gegee nie, maar u regterhand en u arm en die lig van u aangesig, omdat U 'n welbehae in hulle gehad het.
5 U self is my Koning, o God! Gebied die oorwinninge van Jakob.
6 Deur U sal ons ons teëstanders omstoot; in u Naam sal ons hulle vertrap wat teen ons opstaan.
7 Want ek vertrou nie op my boog nie, en my swaard sal my die oorwinning nie gee nie;
8 maar U het ons verlos van ons teëstanders en ons haters beskaamd gemaak.
9 In God roem ons die hele dag, en u Naam sal ons loof tot in ewigheid. Sela.
10 En tog het U ons verstoot en tot skande gemaak, en U trek nie saam met ons leërs uit nie.
11 U laat ons agteruitwyk vir die teëstander, en ons haters plunder na hartelus.
12 U gee ons oor soos slagvee, en U het ons onder die nasies verstrooi.
13 U verkoop u volk vir niks en het nie baie verdien deur hulle koopprys nie.
14 U maak ons 'n smaad vir ons bure, 'n spot en beskimping vir die wat rondom ons is.
15 U maak ons 'n spreekwoord onder die nasies, 'n hoofskudding onder die volke.
16 My skande is die hele dag voor my, en die skaamte van my aangesig oordek my;
17 weens die stem van die smader en lasteraar, weens die blik van die vyand en wraakgierige.
18 Dit alles het oor ons gekom, en tog het ons U nie vergeet en nie bedrieglik gehandel teen u verbond nie.
19 Ons hart het nie agteruitgewyk nie, en ons gange het van u pad nie afgebuig nie,
20 alhoewel U ons verbrysel het in 'n plek van jakkalse en ons met 'n doodskaduwee oordek.
21 As ons die Naam van onse God vergeet het en ons hande uitgebrei het na 'n vreemde god --
22 sou God dit nie naspeur nie? Want Hy ken die geheime van die hart.
23 Maar om U ontwil word ons die hele dag gedood; ons word gereken as slagskape.
24 Ontwaak! Waarom slaap U, Here? Word tog wakker! Verstoot nie vir ewig nie!
25 Waarom verberg U u aangesig, vergeet U ons ellende en ons verdrukking?
26 Want ons siel is in die stof neergebuig; ons buik kleef aan die aarde. [ (Psalms 44:27) Staan op tot ons hulp en verlos ons om u goedertierenheid ontwil! ]

2 \44:1\It has come to our ears, O God, our fathers have given us the story, of the works which you did in their days, in the old times,
3 \44:2\Uprooting the nations with your hand, and planting our fathers in their place; cutting down the nations, but increasing the growth of your people.
4 \44:3\For they did not make the land theirs by their swords, and it was not their arms which kept them safe; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you had pleasure in them.
5 \44:4\You are my King and my God; ordering salvation for Jacob.
6 \44:5\Through you will we overcome our haters; by your name will they be crushed under our feet who are violent against us.
7 \44:6\I will not put faith in my bow, my sword will not be my salvation.
8 \44:7\But it is you who have been our saviour from those who were against us, and have put to shame those who had hate for us.
9 \44:8\Our pride is in God at all times, to his name we give praise for ever. (Selah.)
10 \44:9\But now you have sent us away from you, and put us to shame; you do not go out with our armies.
11 \44:10\Because of this we are turned back by the attacker: those who have hate for us take our goods for themselves.
12 \44:11\You have made us like sheep which are taken for meat; we are put to flight among the nations.
13 \44:12\You let your people go for nothing; your wealth is not increased by their price.
14 \44:13\You have made us to be looked down on by our neighbours, we are laughed at and shamed by those who are round about us.
15 \44:14\Our name is a word of shame among the nations, a sign for the shaking of heads among the peoples.
16 \44:15\My downfall is ever before me, and I am covered with the shame of my face;
17 \44:16\Because of the voice of him who says sharp and bitter words; because of the hater and him who is the instrument of punishment.
18 \44:17\All this has come on us, but still we have kept you in our memory; and we have not been false to your word.
19 \44:18\Our hearts have not gone back, and our steps have not been turned out of your way;
20 \44:19\Though you have let us be crushed in the place of jackals, though we are covered with darkest shade.
21 \44:20\If the name of our God has gone out of our minds, or if our hands have been stretched out to a strange god,
22 \44:21\Will not God make search for it? for he sees the secrets of the heart.
23 \44:22\Truly, because of you we are put to death every day; we are numbered like sheep for destruction.
24 \44:23\Why are you sleeping, O Lord? awake! and come to our help, do not give us up for ever.
25 \44:24\Why is your face covered, and why do you give no thought to our trouble and our cruel fate?
26 \44:25\For our souls are crushed down to the dust: our bodies are stretched out on the earth.
27 \44:26\Up! and come to our help, and give us salvation because of your mercy.
