1 And the whole assembly lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole assembly said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or in this wilderness would that we had died! 3 And why is Jehovah bringing us to this land that we may fall by the sword, that our wives and our little ones may become a prey? Is it not better for us to return to Egypt? 4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return to Egypt.

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell upon their faces before the whole congregation of the assembly of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of them that searched out the land, rent their garments. 7 And they spoke to the whole assembly of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it out, is a very, very good land. 8 If Jehovah delight in us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us, a land that flows with milk and honey; 9 only rebel not against Jehovah; and fear not the people of the land; for they shall be our food. Their defence is departed from them, and Jehovah is with us: fear them not. 10 And the whole assembly said that they should be stoned with stones. And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the tent of meeting to all the children of Israel.

11 And Jehovah said to Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they. 13 And Moses said to Jehovah, Then the Egyptians will hear it; for in thy might thou broughtest up this people from the midst of them; 14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that thou, Jehovah, art in the midst of this people, that thou, Jehovah, lettest thyself be seen eye to eye, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15 if thou now slayest this people as one man, then the nations that have heard thy fame will speak, saying, 16 Because Jehovah was not able to bring this people into the land that he had sworn unto them, he has therefore slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of the Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, 18 Jehovah is slow to anger, and abundant in goodness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and fourth generation. 19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy loving-kindness, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

20 And Jehovah said, I have pardoned according to thy word. 21 But as surely as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah! 22 for all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice, 23 shall in no wise see the land which I did swear unto their fathers: none of them that despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because he hath another spirit in him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he came; and his seed shall possess it. 25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley.) To-morrow turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness, on the way to the Red sea. 26 And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 How long shall I bear with this evil assembly, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. 28 Say unto them, As surely as I live, saith Jehovah, if I do not do unto you as ye have spoken in mine ears! 29 In this wilderness shall your carcases fall; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number from twenty years old and upwards, who have murmured against me, 30 shall in no wise come into the land, concerning which I have lifted up my hand to make you dwell in it; save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, of whom ye said they should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land that ye have despised. 32 And as to you, your carcases shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye have searched out the land, forty days, each day for a year shall ye bear your iniquities forty years, and ye shall know mine estrangement from you. 35 I Jehovah have spoken; I will surely do it unto all this evil assembly which have gathered together against me! in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

36 And the men whom Moses had sent to search out the land, who returned, and made the whole assembly to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report upon the land, 37 even those men who had brought up an evil report upon the land, died by a plague before Jehovah. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, lived still of the men that had gone to search out the land. 39 And Moses told all these sayings to all the children of Israel; then the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose up early in the morning, and went up to the hill-top, saying, Here are we, and we will go up to the place of which Jehovah has spoken; for we have sinned. 41 And Moses said, Why now do ye transgress the commandment of Jehovah? but it shall not prosper! 42 Go not up, for Jehovah is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies; 43 for the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; for as ye have turned away from Jehovah, Jehovah will not be with you. 44 Yet they presumed to go up to the hill-top; but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and Moses, did not depart from the midst of the camp. 45 And the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt on that hill, came down and smote them, and cut them to pieces, as far as Hormah.

Ei nu mai au niciun sprijin: Domnul*Gen. 48:21.Exod 33:16.Deut. 20:1,3,4;31:6,8.Ios. 1:5.Jud. 1:22.2 Cron. 13:12;15:2;20:17;32:8.Ps. 46:7,11.Is. 41:10.Amos 5:14.Zah. 8:23. este cu noi, nu vă temeți de ei!" 10 Toată*Exod 17:4. adunarea vorbea să-i ucidă cu pietre, când slava*Exod 16:10;24:16,17;40:34.Lev. 9:23. Ei știau*Exod 15:14.Ios. 2:9,10;5:1. că Tu, Domnul, ești în mijlocul poporului acestuia; că Te arătai în chip văzut, Tu, Domnul; că norul*Exod 13:21;40:38. Cap. 10:34.Neem. 9:12.Ps. 78:14;105:39. Tău stă peste el; că Tu mergi înaintea lui ziua într-un stâlp de nor și noaptea într-un stâlp de foc. 15 Dacă omori pe poporul acesta ca pe un singur om, neamurile care au auzit vorbindu-se de Tine vor zice: 16 ‘Domnul n-avea*Deut. 9:28.Ios. 7:9. putere să ducă pe poporul acesta în țara pe care jurase că i-o va da, de aceea l-a omorât în pustie!’ 17 Acum, să se arate puterea Domnului în mărimea ei, cum ai spus când ai zis: 18 ‘Domnul este încet*Exod 34:6,7.Ps. 103:8;145:8.Iona 4:2. la mânie și bogat în bunătate, iartă fărădelegea și răzvrătirea, dar nu ține pe cel vinovat drept nevinovat și pedepsește*Exod 20:5;34:7. fărădelegea părinților în copii până la al treilea și la al patrulea neam.’ 19 Iartă*Exod 34:9. dar fărădelegea poporului acestuia*Ps. 106:45., după*Ps. 78:38. mărimea îndurării Tale, cum ai iertat poporului acestuia din Egipt până aici." 20 Și Domnul a spus: „Iert, cum ai*Ps. 106:23.Iac. 5:16.1 Ioan 5:14-16. cerut. 21 Dar cât este de adevărat că Eu sunt viu și că slava Domnului va umple tot*Ps. 72:19. pământul, 22 atât este de adevărat că toți*Deut. 1:35.Ps. 95:11;106:26.Evr. 3:17,18. cei ce au văzut cu ochii lor slava Mea și minunile pe care le-am făcut în Egipt și în pustie, și totuși M-au ispitit de zece*Gen. 31:7. ori acum și n-au ascultat glasul Meu, 23 toți aceia*Cap. 32:11.Ezec. 20:15. nu vor vedea țara pe care am jurat părinților lor că le-o voi da, și anume toți cei ce M-au nesocotit n-o vor vedea. 24 Iar pentru că robul Meu Caleb*Deut. 1:36.Ios. 14:6,8,9,14. a fost însuflețit de un alt duh și a urmat în*Cap. 32:12. totul calea Mea, îl voi face să intre în țara în care s-a dus și urmașii lui o vor stăpâni. 25 Amaleciții și canaaniții locuiesc valea aceasta, deci mâine, întoarceți-vă și plecați*Deut. 1:40. în pustie, pe calea care duce spre Marea Roșie." 26 Domnul a vorbit lui Moise și lui Aaron și a zis: 27 „Până când*Vers. 11.Exod 16:28.Mat. 17:17. voi lăsa această rea adunare să cârtească împotriva Mea? Am auzit cârtirile*Exod 16:12. copiilor lui Israel, care cârteau împotriva Mea. 28 Spune-le: ‘Pe*Vers. 23. Cap. 26:65;32:11.Deut. 1:35.Evr. 3:17. viața Mea’, zice Domnul, ‘că vă voi face întocmai*Vers. 2. cum ați vorbit în auzul urechilor Mele! 29 Trupurile voastre moarte vor cădea în pustia aceasta. Voi toți*Cap. 1:45;26:64., a căror numărătoare s-a făcut numărându-vă de la vârsta de douăzeci de ani în sus și care ați cârtit împotriva Mea, 30 nu veți intra în țara pe care jurasem că vă voi da-o s-o locuiți, afară*Vers. 38. Cap. 26:65;32:12.Deut. 1:36,38. de Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, și Iosua, fiul lui Nun. 31 Pe*Deut. 1:39. copilașii voștri însă, despre care ați zis că vor fi de jaf, îi voi face să intre în ea, ca să cunoască țara pe care ați*Ps. 106:24. nesocotit-o voi. 32 Iar cât despre voi, trupurile*1 Cor. 10:5.Evr. 3:17. voastre moarte vor cădea în pustie. 33 Și copiii voștri vor rătăci*Cap. 32:13.Ps. 107:40. patruzeci*Deut. 2:14. de ani în pustie și vor ispăși*Ezec. 23:35. astfel păcatele voastre, până ce toate trupurile voastre moarte vor cădea în pustie. 34 După cum*Cap. 13:25. în patruzeci de zile*Ps. 95:10.Ezec. 4:6. ați iscodit țara, tot așa, patruzeci de ani veți purta pedeapsa fărădelegilor voastre, adică un an de fiecare zi, și veți ști atunci ce înseamnă să-Mi trag Eu mâna de la voi. 35 Eu*Cap. 23:19., Domnul, am vorbit! În adevăr, așa voi face acestei rele*Vers. 27,29;26:65.1 Cor. 10:5. adunări, care s-a unit împotriva Mea; vor fi nimiciți în pustia aceasta și în ea vor muri.’" 36 Bărbații*Cap. 13:31,32. pe care îi trimisese Moise să iscodească țara și care, la întoarcerea lor, făcuseră ca toată adunarea să cârtească împotriva lui, înnegrind țara, 37 oamenii aceștia, care înnegriseră țara, au murit*1 Cor. 10:10.Evr. 3:17.Iuda 5. acolo, înaintea Domnului, loviți de o moarte năprasnică. 38 Numai Iosua, fiul*Cap. 26:65.Ios. 14:6,10. lui Nun, și Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, au rămas cu viață dintre oamenii aceia care se duseseră să iscodească țara.

39 Moise a spus aceste lucruri tuturor copiilor lui Israel, și poporul a fost într-o mare*Exod 33:4. jale. 40 S-au sculat dis-de-dimineață a doua zi și s-au suit pe vârful muntelui, zicând: „Iată-ne!*Deut. 1:41. Suntem gata să ne suim în locul de care a vorbit Domnul, căci am păcătuit." 41 Moise a zis: „Pentru ce călcați porunca*Vers. 25.2 Cron. 24:20. Domnului? Nu veți izbuti. 42 Nu vă suiți*Deut. 1:42., căci Domnul nu este în mijlocul vostru! Nu căutați să fiți bătuți de vrăjmașii voștri. 43 Căci amaleciții și canaaniții sunt înaintea voastră și veți cădea uciși de sabie; odată ce v-ați abătut*2 Cron. 15:2. de la Domnul, Domnul nu va fi cu voi." 44 Ei s-au îndărătnicit*Deut. 1:43. și s-au suit pe vârful muntelui, dar chivotul legământului și Moise n-au ieșit din mijlocul taberei. 45 Atunci*Vers. 43.Deut. 1:44. s-au coborât amaleciții și canaaniții care locuiau pe muntele acela, i-au bătut și i-au tăiat în bucăți până la*Cap. 21:3.Jud. 1:17.
