1 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Se non fosse stato l’Eterno che fu per noi, lo dica pure ora Israele,2 se non fosse stato l’Eterno che fu per noi, quando gli uomini si levarono contro noi,3 allora ci avrebbero inghiottiti tutti vivi, quando l’ira loro ardeva contro noi;4 allora le acque ci avrebbero sommerso, il torrente sarebbe passato sull’anima nostra;5 allora le acque orgogliose sarebbero passate sull’anima nostra.6 Benedetto sia l’Eterno che non ci ha dato in preda ai loro denti!7 L’anima nostra è scampata, come un uccello dal laccio degli uccellatori; il laccio è stato rotto, e noi siamo scampati.8 Il nostro aiuto è nel nome dell’Eterno, che ha fatto il cielo e la terra.
