2 Samuel 21

1 There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Yahweh. Yahweh said, "It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death."

2 The king called the Gibeonites and said to them (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites, and the children of Israel had sworn to them; and Saul sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah); 3 and David said to the Gibeonites, "What should I do for you? And with what should I make atonement, that you may bless Yahweh’s inheritance?"

4 The Gibeonites said to him, "It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel."

He said, "I will do for you whatever you say."

5 They said to the king, "The man who consumed us and who plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel, 6 let seven men of his sons be delivered to us, and we will hang them up to Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Yahweh."

The king said, "I will give them."

7 But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Yahweh’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she bore to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite. 9 He delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites; and they hanged them on the mountain before Yahweh, and all seven of them fell together. They were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.

10 Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water poured on them from the sky. She allowed neither the birds of the sky to rest on them by day, nor the animals of the field by night. 11 David was told what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done. 12 So David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh Gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hanged them in the day that the Philistines killed Saul in Gilboa; 13 and he brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son. They also gathered the bones of those who were hanged. 14 They buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the tomb of Kish his father; and they performed all that the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer for the land.

15 The Philistines had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines. David grew faint; 16 and Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of bronze in weight, he being armed with a new sword, thought he would kill David. 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, "Don’t go out with us to battle any more, so that you don’t quench the lamp of Israel."

18 After this, there was again war with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was of the sons of the giant. 19 There was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite’s brother, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 20 There was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on every hand and six toes on every foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was born to the giant. 21 When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, killed him. 22 These four were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

David hämnas gibeoniterna

1 *1 Mos 12:10, 41:54. Under Davids tid drabbade en svält som varade tre år i följd. Då sökte David Herrens ansikte. Trots att Israels barn hade gett dem sin ed*21:2gett dem sin edVid erövringen av landet fyrahundra år tidigare (Jos 9:15)., hade Saul i sin iver för Israels barn och Juda försökt döda dem.

3 David sade till gibeoniterna: "Vad ska jag göra för er? Och hur ska jag bringa försoning så att ni välsignar Herrens arvedel?" 4 Gibeoniterna svarade honom: "Vi vill inte ha silver och guld från Saul och hans hus, och vi har heller inte rätt att döda någon i Israel." David frågade: "Vad begär ni då att jag ska göra för er?" 5 De svarade kungen: "Mannen som ville förgöra oss och planerade att utrota oss så att vi inte skulle finnas kvar i Israels land – 6 *4 Mos 25:4. låt sju av hans söner utlämnas till oss så att vi får hänga upp*21:6hänga uppSkamstraff efter avrättning (Jos 8:29, 10:26). Men kungen skonade Mefiboshet, son till Sauls son Jonatan, på grund av eden som David och Sauls son Jonatan hade gett varandra inför Herren. 8 *1 Sam 18:19, 2 Sam 3:7, 1 Krön 15:29. Kungen tog de båda söner som Rispa, Ajas dotter, hade fött åt Saul, nämligen Armoni och Mefiboshet, och de fem söner som Merab,*21:8MerabAndra handskrifter: "Mikal" (men jfr 1 Sam 18:19, 2 Sam 6:23). Sauls dotter, hade fött åt meholatiten Adriel, Barsillajs son. 9 Dem överlämnade han i gibeoniternas händer, och de hängde upp dem på berget inför Herren så att alla sju dog på samma gång. Det var under de första skördedagarna, när kornskörden började*21:9när kornskörden börjadeVid påsken i april., som de blev dödade.

10 Rispa, Ajas dotter, tog sin sorgdräkt och bredde ut den åt sig ovanpå klippan, från början av skörden tills vattnet strömmade ner från himlen över kropparna. Hon lät inte himlens fåglar röra dem om dagen eller markens vilda djur om natten.

11 När det berättades för David vad Sauls bihustru Rispa, Ajas dotter, hade gjort, 12 *1 Sam 31:11f. gav sig David i väg och hämtade Sauls och hans son Jonatans ben från invånarna i Jabesh i Gilead. De hade smugit bort deras kroppar från torget i Bet-Shan där filisteerna hade hängt upp dem den dagen filisteerna besegrade Saul på Gilboa berg. 13 När David hade hämtat Sauls och hans son Jonatans ben därifrån samlade man också ihop de upphängdas ben. 14 Sedan begravde man Sauls och hans son Jonatans ben i Benjamins land, i Sela, i graven som tillhörde Sauls far Kish. Man gjorde allt som kungen hade befallt. Därefter lyssnade Gud till landets bön.

Strider mot filisteerna

15 Filisteerna började krig mot Israel på nytt, och David drog ner med sina tjänare. De stred mot filisteerna, och David blev utmattad. 16 Och Jisbo-Benob, en av rafaeernas*21:16rafaeernaHögrest jättefolk (se 5 Mos 3:11, Jos 11:21f med not). ättlingar, tänkte då döda David. Han hade en lans som vägde trehundra siklar koppar*21:16trehundra siklar kopparDrygt 3 kg. och bar en ny rustning*21:16en ny rustningAnnan översättning: "ett nytt svärd"..

17 *2 Sam 18:3, 1 Kung 11:36, 15:4, 2 Kung 8:19, Ps 132:17, Ords 13:9. Men Abishaj, Serujas son, kom till hans hjälp och dödade filistén. Då tog Davids män en ed av honom: "Du får inte dra ut med oss i striden mer. Du får inte släcka Israels lampa*21:17Israels lampaDet hopp som kungen, Guds smorde, var för folket (2 Krön 21:7, Ps 132:17).."

18 *1 Krön 20:4. Efter en tid blev det strid med filisteerna vid Gob. Det var då hushatiten Sibbekaj dräpte Saf, en av rafaeernas ättlingar.

19 *1 Sam 17:7, 1 Krön 20:5. Ännu en gång blev det strid med filisteerna vid Gob. Elhanan, Jaare-Oregims son från Betlehem, slog då ihjäl gatiten Goliat*21:19gatiten GoliatSyftar troligen på Goliats bror (1 Krön 20:5). Se 1 Sam 17., vars spjutskaft liknade en vävbom.

20 Sedan blev det återigen strid vid Gat. Där var en reslig man som hade sex fingrar på varje hand och sex tår på varje fot, tillsammans tjugofyra. Han var också ättling till rafaeerna. 21 *1 Sam 16:9, 2 Sam 13:3, 1 Krön 2:13. När han hånade Israel blev han dödad av Jonatan, son till Shimea, Davids bror. 22 Dessa fyra var ättlingar till rafaeerna i Gat. De föll för Davids och hans tjänares hand.
