1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered,

2 "Therefore my thoughts answer me,

even by reason of my haste that is in me.

3 I have heard the reproof which puts me to shame.

The spirit of my understanding answers me.

4 Don’t you know this from old time,

since man was placed on earth,

5 that the triumphing of the wicked is short,

the joy of the godless but for a moment?

6 Though his height mount up to the heavens,

and his head reach to the clouds,

7 yet he will perish forever like his own dung.

Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’

8 He will fly away as a dream, and will not be found.

Yes, he will be chased away like a vision of the night.

9 The eye which saw him will see him no more,

neither will his place see him any more.

10 His children will seek the favor of the poor.

His hands will give back his wealth.

11 His bones are full of his youth,

but youth will lie down with him in the dust.

12 "Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth,

though he hide it under his tongue,

13 though he spare it, and will not let it go,

but keep it still within his mouth,

14 yet his food in his bowels is turned.

It is cobra venom within him.

15 He has swallowed down riches, and he will vomit them up again.

God will cast them out of his belly.

16 He will suck cobra venom.

The viper’s tongue will kill him.

17 He will not look at the rivers,

the flowing streams of honey and butter.

18 He will restore that for which he labored, and will not swallow it down.

He will not rejoice according to the substance that he has gotten.

19 For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor.

He has violently taken away a house, and he will not build it up.

20 "Because he knew no quietness within him,

he will not save anything of that in which he delights.

21 There was nothing left that he didn’t devour,

therefore his prosperity will not endure.

22 In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him.

The hand of everyone who is in misery will come on him.

23 When he is about to fill his belly, God will cast the fierceness of his wrath on him.

It will rain on him while he is eating.

24 He will flee from the iron weapon.

The bronze arrow will strike him through.

25 He draws it out, and it comes out of his body.

Yes, the glittering point comes out of his liver.

Terrors are on him.

26 All darkness is laid up for his treasures.

An unfanned fire will devour him.

It will consume that which is left in his tent.

27 The heavens will reveal his iniquity.

The earth will rise up against him.

28 The increase of his house will depart.

They will rush away in the day of his wrath.

29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God,

the heritage appointed to him by God."

Sofars andra tal

1 Då tog Sofar från Naama till orda och sade:

2 Mina tankar tvingar mig att svara,

jag är så upprörd.

3 Kränkande tillrättavisning

måste jag höra,

men mitt förstånds ande

ger mig svar.

4 Vet du inte att det alltid varit så,

ända sedan människan

sattes på jorden,

5 *Job 8:13, Ps 37:35f. att de gudlösas jubel är kortvarigt,

att den gudlöses glädje

varar ett ögonblick?

6 *Jes 14:13f, Dan 4:10f, Jer 51:53. Även om hans förhävelse

stiger mot himlen

och hans huvud når till molnen,

7 så förgås han dock för alltid

som sin egen träck.

De som såg honom ska fråga:

"Var finns han?"

8 *Ps 37:36, 73:20. Likt en dröm flyger han bort

och ingen finner honom,

han jagas i väg

som en syn om natten.

9 *Job 7:10, 8:18, Ps 37:10, 103:16. Ögat som såg honom

ser honom aldrig mer,

hans plats får inte återse honom.

10 *Job 27:14, Ps 109:10. Hans barn måste gottgöra de fattiga,

hans händer återlämna

hans rikedom.

11 Hans ben var fulla

av ungdomskraft,

men de ska ligga i stoftet

med honom.

12 Även om ondskan är söt i hans mun

och han gömmer den

under tungan,

13 även om han är rädd om den

och inte vill förlora den

utan förvarar den i sin mun,

14 så förvandlas hans föda i hans inre

och blir till ormgift

inom honom.

15 Den rikedom han slukat

måste han kräkas upp,

Gud driver ut den ur hans buk.

16 Ormgift ska han suga i sig,

giftormens tunga ska döda honom.

17 Inga bäckar får han se,

inget flöde av honung

och gräddmjölk.

18 *5 Mos 28:30f, Job 10:15, Jer 12:13. Han måste återlämna

vad han tjänat,

han får inte njuta av det

eller glädjas åt den rikedom

han vunnit,

19 *Jes 5:8, Mark 12:40. för han slog och övergav de ringa,

han rövade åt sig hus

som han inte hade byggt.

20 Han känner ingen ro i sitt inre,

han kan inte rädda sig

genom sina ägodelar.

21 Inget kom undan hans glupskhet,

därför ska hans framgång

inte bestå.

22 Mitt i sitt överflöd

ska han drabbas av nöd,

lidande av alla slag

ska möta honom.

23 *Ps 11:6. När han fyller sin buk

ska Gud sända sin vredes glöd

över honom,

och den ska träffa honom som regn.

24 *Jer 48:24, Amos 5:19. Flyr han för vapen av järn

ska kopparbågens pilar

genomborra honom.

25 Drar han ut pilen från sin rygg

och den blanka udden

ur sin galla,

då drabbar honom dödsångest.

26 *5 Mos 32:22, Job 15:30. Djupt mörker väntar

på hans ägodelar.

En eld som ingen blåser på

ska förtära honom,

den ska ödelägga

det som finns kvar i hans tält.

27 Himlarna visar hans skuld

och jorden reser sig mot honom.

28 Allt i hans hus drivs bort

som forsande vatten

på vredens dag.

29 *Job 18:21, 27:13f. Det är vad den gudlösa människan

får av Gud,

den lott Gud har bestämt.
