1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2 and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three sabbath days reasoned with them from the scriptures, 3 opening and alleging that it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, said he, I proclaim unto you, is the Christ. 4 And some of them were persuaded, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. 5 But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people. 6 And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; 7 whom Jason hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. 8 And they troubled the multitude and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. 9 And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who when they were come thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the scriptures daily, whether these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed; also of the Greek women of honorable estate, and of men, not a few. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed of Paul at Beroea also, they came thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudes. 14 And then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea: and Silas and Timothy abode there still. 15 But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timothy that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he beheld the city full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with them that met him. 18 And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took hold of him, and brought him unto the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by thee? 20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. 21 (Now all the Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.) 22 And Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, and said,

Ye men of Athens, in all things I perceive that ye are very religious. 23 For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. What therefore ye worship in ignorance, this I set forth unto you. 24 The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 and he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us: 28 for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said,

For we are also his offspring.

29 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man. 30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent: 31 inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again. 33 Thus Paul went out from among them. 34 But certain men clave unto him, and believed: among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

1 Pavel și Sila au trecut prin Amfipoli și Apolonia și au venit în Tesalonic, unde era o sinagogă a iudeilor. 2 Pavel, după obiceiul său, a*Luca 4:16. Cap. 9:20;13:5,14;14:1;16:13;19:8. intrat în sinagogă. Trei zile de Sabat a vorbit cu ei din Scripturi, 3 dovedind și lămurind că*Luca 24:26,46. Cap. 18:28.Gal. 3:1. Hristosul trebuia să pătimească și să învieze din morți. „Și acest Isus, pe care vi-L vestesc eu", zicea el, „este Hristosul." 4 Unii*Cap. 28:24. din ei și o mare mulțime de greci temători de Dumnezeu și multe femei de frunte au crezut și au trecut de partea lui Pavel și a lui Sila*Cap. 15:22,27,32,40.. 5 Dar iudeii care nu crezuseră, de pizmă, au luat cu ei niște oameni fără căpătâi din mulțime, au făcut gloată și au întărâtat cetatea. S-au năpustit asupra casei lui Iason și căutau pe Pavel și pe Sila ca să-i aducă afară, la norod. 6 Fiindcă nu i-au găsit, au târât pe Iason*Rom. 16:21. și pe vreo câțiva frați înaintea dregătorilor cetății și strigau: „Oamenii aceștia*Cap. 16:20. care au răscolit lumea au venit și aici, 7 și Iason i-a găzduit. Ei toți lucrează împotriva poruncilor Cezarului și spun*Luca 23:2.Ioan 19:12.1 Pet. 2:13. că este un alt Împărat: Isus." 8 Prin aceste vorbe, iudeii au tulburat norodul și pe dregătorii cetății, 9 care au dat drumul lui Iason și celorlalți numai după ce au căpătat de la ei un zălog.

10 Frații*Cap. 9:25. Vers. 14. au trimis îndată, noaptea, pe Pavel și pe Sila la Bereea. Când au sosit, au intrat în sinagoga iudeilor. 11 Iudeii aceștia aveau o inimă mai aleasă decât cei din Tesalonic. Au primit Cuvântul cu toată râvna și cercetau*Is. 34:16.Luca 16:29.Ioan 5:39. Scripturile în fiecare zi, ca să vadă dacă ce li se spunea este așa. 12 Mulți dintre ei și din femeile cu vază ale grecilor și mulți bărbați au crezut. 13 Dar iudeii din Tesalonic, când au aflat că Pavel vestea Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu și în Bereea, au venit acolo, ca să tulbure și să ațâțe noroadele. 14 Atunci, frații au pornit îndată*Mat. 10:23. pe Pavel spre mare; Sila și Timotei au rămas în Bereea.

15 Cei ce însoțeau pe Pavel l-au dus până la Atena. Apoi s-au întors cu însărcinarea*Cap. 18:5. să ducă lui Sila și lui Timotei porunca să vină cât mai curând la el. 16 Pe când îi aștepta Pavel în Atena, i se*2 Pet. 2:8. întărâta duhul la vederea acestei cetăți pline de idoli. 17 În sinagogă stătea deci de vorbă cu iudeii și cu oamenii temători de Dumnezeu, iar în piață stătea de vorbă în fiecare zi cu aceia pe care-i întâlnea. 18 Unii din filozofii epicurieni și stoici au intrat în vorbă cu el. Și unii ziceau: „Ce vrea să spună palavragiul acesta?" Alții, când l-au auzit că vestește pe Isus și învierea, ziceau: „Pare că vestește niște dumnezei străini." 19 Atunci l-au luat, l-au dus la Areopag și au zis: „Putem să știm care este această învățătură nouă pe care o vestești tu? 20 Fiindcă tu ne aduci ceva ciudat la auz. Am vrea dar să știm ce vrea să zică aceasta." 21 Căci toți atenienii și străinii care stăteau în Atena nu-și petreceau vremea cu nimic altceva decât să spună sau să asculte ceva nou. 22 Pavel a stat în picioare în mijlocul Areopagului și a zis: „Bărbați atenieni! În toate privințele vă găsesc foarte religioși. 23 Căci, pe când străbăteam cetatea voastră și mă uitam de aproape la lucrurile la care vă închinați voi, am descoperit chiar și un altar pe care este scris: ‘Unui Dumnezeu necunoscut!’ Ei bine, ceea ce voi cinstiți, fără să cunoașteți, aceea vă vestesc eu. 24 Dumnezeu*Cap. 14:15. care a făcut lumea și tot ce este în ea este Domnul*Mat. 11:25. cerului și al pământului și nu*Cap. 7:48. locuiește în temple făcute de mâini. 25 El nu este slujit de mâini omenești, ca*Ps. 50:8. și când ar avea trebuință de ceva, El*Gen. 2:7.Num. 16:22.Iov 12:10;27:3;33:4.Is. 42:5;57:16.Zah. 12:1., care dă tuturor viața, suflarea și toate lucrurile. 26 El a făcut ca toți oamenii, ieșiți dintr-unul singur, să locuiască pe toată fața pământului; le-a așezat anumite vremuri și a pus anumite hotare*Deut. 32:8. locuinței lor, 27 ca*Rom. 1:20. ei să caute pe Dumnezeu și să se silească să-L găsească bâjbâind, măcar*Cap. 14:17. că nu este departe de fiecare din noi. 28 Căci în*Col. 1:17.Evr. 1:3. El avem viața, mișcarea și ființa, după cum*Tit 1:12. au zis și unii din poeții voștri: ‘Suntem din neamul Lui…’ 29 Astfel dar, fiindcă suntem de neam din Dumnezeu, nu*Is. 40:18. trebuie să credem că Dumnezeirea este asemenea aurului sau argintului sau pietrei cioplite cu meșteșugirea și iscusința omului. 30 Dumnezeu nu ține seama de vremurile*Cap. 14:16.Rom. 3:25. de neștiință și poruncește acum*Luca 24:47.Tit 2:11,12.1 Pet. 1:14;4:3. tuturor oamenilor de pretutindeni să se pocăiască, 31 pentru că a rânduit o zi în care va*Cap. 10:42.Rom. 2:16;14:10. judeca lumea după dreptate, prin Omul pe care L-a rânduit pentru aceasta și despre care a dat tuturor oamenilor o dovadă netăgăduită prin*Cap. 2:24. faptul că L-a înviat din morți…" 32 Când au auzit ei de învierea morților, unii își băteau joc, iar alții au zis: „Asupra acestor lucruri te vom asculta altă dată." 33 Astfel, Pavel a ieșit din mijlocul lor. 34 Totuși unii au trecut de partea lui și au crezut; între aceștia erau Dionisie Areopagitul, o femeie numită Damaris și alții împreună cu ei.
