2 Porque fomos submergidos por uma onda de crimes- os limites das propriedades têm sido alterados,rebanhos inteiros são roubados;até os jumentos levam aos pobres e aos órfãos.3 As viúvas pobres são obrigadas a entregar o pouco que têmpara conseguirem um empréstimo.4 Os necessitados são postos de parte;são coagidos a sairem do caminho ao cruzarem-se com os grandes.5 Tal como os jumentos selvagens do deserto,os indigentes têm de passar os dias inteirosa tentar apanhar um bocado de alimentopara conseguirem manter-se com vida. Mandam-nos para terras desertas à procura de comida para os filhos.6 Lá, comem o que vão encontrando, o que cresce ao acaso;ou então têm de vindimar as vinhas dos perversos.7 Passam a noite toda tremendo de frio, sem nada para os cobrir.8 Ficam encharcados com as chuvadastrazidas pelos ventos das montanhase abrigam-se em cavernas, nas rochas, à míngua dum lar.9 Os pérfidos são capazes atéde arrancar criancinhas órfãs de pai, ao peito das mães,e de raptar os bebés dos pobres,antes que estes lhes peçam emprestado dinheiro ou comida.10 Por isso os desventurados são coagidos a andaram nús,sem roupa para se cobrirem,e a carregar com comida para outros,enquanto eles próprios desfalecem com fome.11 São forçados a pisar o lagar de azeite, sem poder prová-lo sequer,e a esmagar os cachos de uvas, estando a morrer de sede.12 Os gemidos dos moribundos clamam desde a cidade;e os feridos rogam que os socorram. Contudo Deus não atende os seus lamentos.14 São assassinos que ao erguer-se logo de manhã cedosó têm em mente matar o pobre e o necessitado;e de noite tornam-se ladrões e adúlteros;15 para tal, esperam apenas que caia o crepúsculo e dizem para consigo, 'é a boa altura, porque é quando ninguém me vê'. Escondem a cara para que ninguém os reconheça.16 A noite, para eles, serve para atacar as casas, e o dia para dormirem- não lhes interessa mostrarem-se sob a luz do dia.17 A noite mais escura, para eles, é como o amanhecer; são aliados naturais dos terrores das trevas.18 Mas como eles desaparecem depressa, da face da Terra. Tudo o que possuem é amaldiçoado. Não deixam nada para os filhos.19 A morte consome os pecadores,tal como a neve se derrete com o calor e a seca. Aos pecadores, até a sua própria mãe os esquece.20 Só servem para que os vermes os comam regaladamente. Ninguém se lembrará mais deles. Os perversos serão abatidos, tal como uma árvore perante um ciclone.21 E isso, porque exploram aqueles velhosque viviam sozinhos sem filhos para os protegerem,e desprezam as pobres viúvas.22 Contudo, por vezes, até pareceque Deus protege os poderosos e lhes dá vida,quando toda a gente está a morrer.23 Deus dá-lhes descanso, fortaleza e ajuda-os de muitas maneiras.24 Mas ainda que pareçam agora muito seguros e fortes,de um momento para o outro ir-se-ão, como toda a gente,ceifados como espigas maduras.25 Poderá alguém desmentir-me? Alguém será capaz de dizer que estou a mentir, ou que estou errado?

1 Why, seeing times are not hid from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?2 Some remove the landmarks: they violently take away flocks, and their feed.3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.4 They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.5 Behold, as wild asses in the desert, they go forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.6 They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.7 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.9 They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.10 They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;11 Who make oil within their walls, and tread their wine-presses, and suffer thirst.12 Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.13 They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not its ways, nor abide in its paths.14 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.15 The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the day-time: they know not the light.17 For the morning is to them even as the shades of death: if one knoweth them, they are in the terrors of the shades of death.18 He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards.19 Drouth and heat consume the snow-waters: so doth the grave those who have sinned.20 The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.21 He oppresseth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.22 He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.23 Though it is given him to be in safety, on which he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.24 They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all others, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.25 And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech of no worth?
