1 O meu coração treme com estas coisas.2 Escuta, escuta o trovão da sua voz, que ecoa através dos céus.3 Os seus relâmpagos dardejam em todas as direcções.4 Depois vem o rugir dos trovões - a voz tremenda da sua majestade.5 Em cada trovão, essa voz é cheia de glória. Não podemos compreender a grandeza do seu poder.6 Faz a neve, os aguaceiros e as tempestadescaírem sobre a terra.7 Nessas ocasiões o trabalho do homem pára,para que toda a gente possa reconhecer o seu poder.8 E os animais selvagens escondem-se nas rochas e nas tocas.9 O vento do sul traz a chuva; o do norte, o frio.10 Deus sopra sobre as torrentes, e até os rios mais vastos gelam.11 Carrega as nuvens com humidade, e elas disparam relâmpagos.12 Os raios são dirigidos pela sua mão,e fazem o que lhes manda, através da Terra.13 Manda as tempestades como castigo;ou então, noutras vezes, a sua misericórdia, como encorajamento.14 Ouve, Job, detem-te um poucoe considera essas coisas maravilhosas da parte de Deus.15 Sabes tu bem como Deus controla toda a natureza,e como faz relampejar através das nuvens?16 Compreendes tu como é feito com tanta perfeição e sabedoria,o equilíbrio das nuvens?17 Sabes por que razão vem o calor, quando sopra o vento do sul,e há calma sobre a terra?18 Saberias tu estender o firmamento,que é sólido como um espelho fundido?19 Tu, que julgas saber tanto , ensina-nos a nós outroscomo deveremos aproximarmo-nos de Deus. Nós somos talvez demasiado estúpidos para saber essas coisas!20 Com a tua sabedoria, talvez ousemos aproximarmo-nos dele. Pois bem, haverá algum homemque aceite de boa vontade ser engolido vivo?23 Não podemos sequer imaginar o poder do Deus todo-poderoso. Pois mesmo assim ele é tão justo e misericordioso que não nos destrói.24 Não admira que toda a gente, em toda a parte, o tema! Visto que não se deixa impressionar pelo mais sábio dos homens.

1 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of its place.2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.3 He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning to the ends of the earth.4 After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellence; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.5 God thundereth marvelously with his voice; great things he doeth, which we cannot comprehend.6 For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.7 He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.8 Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.9 From the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold from the north.10 By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.11 Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:12 And it is turned around by his counsels: that they may do whatever he commandeth them upon the face of the world on the earth.13 He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.14 Hearken to this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.15 Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?17 How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?18 Hast thou with him spread out the sky which is strong, and as a molten looking-glass?19 Teach us what we shall say to him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.20 Shall it be told him that I speak? If a man shall speak, surely he will be swallowed up.21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.22 Fair weather cometh from the north: with God is terrible majesty.23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in abundance of justice: he will not afflict.24 Men therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.
