1 Resposta de Job:2 Sim, na verdade quem vos ouve é levado a pensarque vocês sabem tudo! A sabedoria acaba nas vossas pessoas!3 Mas eu próprio também sei umas quantas coisas- é que vocês não são melhores do que eu. E aliás quem não sabe isso que vocês estiveram aí a dizer?4 Eu, aquele que rogou a Deus por ajuda e a quem ele respondeu,tornei-me um motivo de troça para os meus próximos.5 Sim, eu, uma pessoa recta, sou agora aquele de quem se riem. Entretanto o rico mofa dos que se encontram em apertoe é rápido em desprezar os que estão em necessidade.6 Porque os ladrões prosperam. Adiantam-se e provocam Deus- mas isso pouco importa:Deus fornece-lhes tudo de que necessitam!7 Quem é que não se dá conta de que Deus faz coisas assim? Pergunta até às mudas bestas - elas sabem que assim é;pergunta aos pássaros - dir-te-ão o mesmo;8 a própria terra, ou os peixes do mar, comunicar-te-ão a mesma coisa.10 Porque a alma de todo o ser vivente está nas mãos de Deus,assim como a respiração, a vida de toda a humanidade.11 Assim como o meu paladar está preparado para diferenciar os gostos,também o meu espírito sabe provar a verdade, quando a ouço.12 Tal com vocês dizem, os velhos como eusão sabedores, têm entendimento.13 Mas a verdadeira sabedoria e o poder são de Deus. Só ele sabe o que devemos fazer e entende todas as situações.14 E como é grande a sua força! Aquilo que ele vier a destruir não poderá ser reconstruído. Aquele a quem ele aprisiona, não poderá escapar.15 Se retém as chuvas, a terra torna-se num deserto;envia tempestades e as cheias cobrem as terras.16 Sim, com ele está a força e a sabedoria. Tanto o que faz errar como o que erra lhe pertencem.17 É capaz de fazer até desvairar juízes e conselheiros.18 Reduz os governantes a escravos e liberta os servos.19 Os próprios sacerdotes se arriscam a partir como escravos. Os poderosos são abatidos.20 Aos que confiam na sua retórica, tira-lhes a voz; o mesmo acontece com os anciãos que confiam no seu entendimento.21 Derrama desprezo sobre os líderes da nação e tira forças ao forte.22 Enche a escuridão com luz, mesmo a própria sombra da morte.23 Pode exaltar uma nação para, de seguida, a abater; dispersa um povo, mas junta-o de novo.

1 And Job answered and said,2 No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yes, who knoweth not such things as these?4 I am as one mocked by his neighbor, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is derided.5 He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.6 The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare to thee.9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.11 Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste its food?12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.13 With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.14 Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.15 Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.16 With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.17 He leadeth counselors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.18 He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.19 He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.20 He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.21 He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.22 He revealeth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth to light the shades of death.23 He increaseth nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth nations, and straiteneth them again.24 He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.25 They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
