1 Thus said Yahweh, Go and buy a potters earthen bottle,and take of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;2 Then shalt thou go forth into the valley of Ben-hinnom, which is at the opening of the gate of potsherds; and proclaim there the words which I shall speak unto thee;3 and shalt say,Hear ye the word of Yahweh, O kings of Judah And inhabitants of Jerusalem,Thus, saith Yahweh of hostsGod of Israel Behold me! bringing in calamity upon this place, which shall cause the ears of every one that heareth it, to tingle:4 Because they have forsaken me, And have treated this as a foreign place, And have burned incense therein to other gods, which neither they, nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah, have known; And have filled this place with the blood of innocents;5 And have built the high places of Baal for burning up their sons in the fire as ascending-sacrifices to Baal,Which I commanded not, Nor spake, Neither came it up on my heart,6 Therefore, lo! days coming, Declareth Yahweh, When this place shall be called no longer The Topheth, or The Valley of Ben-hinnom,butThe Valley of Slaughter;7 And I will pour out the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, And I will cause them to fall by the sword, before their enemies, and by the hand of them who seek their life,8 And I will give their dead bodies for food, to the bird of the heavens and to the beast of the earth; And I will make this city a desolation and a hissing,every one that passeth by it, shall be astonished and hiss over all her wounds;9 And I will suffer them to eat the flesh of their sons, and the flesh of their daughters, yea every onethe flesh of his friend, will they eat,in the siege and in the straitness, wherewith, their enemies, and they who seek their lives, will straiten them.10 Then shalt thou break the bottle, before the eyes of the men who are walking with thee;11 and shalt say unto themThus, saith Yahweh of hostsThus and thus, will I break this people, and this city, As one breaketh the vessel of a potter, which cannot be made whole any more,And in Topheth, shall they bury, for want of place to bury.12 Thus, will I do to this place Declareth Yahweh, And to the inhabitants thereof,Even making this city like Topheth:13 Yea, the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall like the place of Topheth, be places defiled,even all the houses upon whose roofs they burned incense to all the host of the heavens, and poured out drink-offerings to other gods.14 Then entered Jeremiah out of Topheth, whither Yahweh had sent him to prophesy,and stood in the court of the house of Yahweh, and said unto all the people:15 Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, Behold me! brining in against this city, and upon all the cities thereof, The whole calamity which I have pronounced against her,Because they stiffened their neck, that they might not hear my words.

1 Assim diz o Senhor: Vai, e compra uma botija de oleiro, e leva contigo os anciãos do povo e os anciãos dos sacerdotes. 2 E sai ao vale do filho de Hinom, que está à entrada da Porta do Sol, e apregoa ali as palavras que eu te disser. 3 E dize: Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, ó reis de Judá e moradores de Jerusalém. Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Eis que trarei tão grande mal sobre este lugar, que quem quer que dele ouvir retinir-lhe-ão as orelhas. 4 Porquanto me deixaram, e profanaram este lugar, e nele queimaram incenso a outros deuses, que nunca conheceram, nem eles, nem seus pais, nem os reis de Judá; e encheram este lugar de sangue de inocentes. 5 Porque edificaram os altos de Baal, para queimarem seus filhos em holocausto a Baal; o que nunca lhes ordenei, nem falei, nem subiu ao meu coração. 6 Por isso, eis que dias vêm, diz o Senhor, em que este lugar não se chamará mais Tofete, nem o vale do filho de Hinom, mas o vale da Matança. 7 Porque dissiparei o conselho de Judá e de Jerusalém, neste lugar, e os farei cair à espada diante de seus inimigos e pela mão dos que buscam a vida deles; e darei os seus cadáveres por pasto às aves dos céus e aos animais da terra. 8 E porei esta cidade por espanto e por objeto de assobios; todo aquele que passar por ela se espantará e assobiará, por causa de todas as suas pragas. 9 E lhes farei comer a carne de seus filhos e a carne de suas filhas, e comerá cada um a carne do seu próximo, no cerco e no aperto em que os apertarão os seus inimigos e os que buscam a vida deles.

10 Então, quebrarás a botija à vista dos homens que foram contigo; 11 e dir-lhes-ás: Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Deste modo quebrarei eu este povo e esta cidade, como se quebra o vaso do oleiro, que não pode mais refazer-se, e os enterrarão em Tofete, porque não haverá outro lugar para os enterrar. 12 Assim farei a este lugar, diz o Senhor, e aos seus moradores; sim, para pôr esta cidade como Tofete. 13 E as casas de Jerusalém e as casas dos reis de Judá serão imundas como o lugar de Tofete; como também todas as casas sobre cujos terraços queimaram incenso a todo o exército dos céus e ofereceram libações a deuses estranhos.

14 Vindo, pois, Jeremias de Tofete, para onde o tinha enviado o Senhor a profetizar, se pôs em pé no átrio da Casa do Senhor e disse a todo o povo: 15 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Eis que trarei sobre esta cidade e sobre todas as suas cidades todo o mal que pronunciei contra ela, porquanto endureceram a sua cerviz, para não ouvirem as minhas palavras.
