1 Then drew near all the captains of the forces, and Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah,and all the people from the least even unto the greatest;2 and said unto Jeremiah the prophetLet our supplication we beseech thee fall prostrate before thee, and pray thou in our behalf unto Yahweh thy God, in behalf of all this remnant,for we are left a few out of many, just as thine own eyes do behold us:3 that Yahweh thy God may tell us the way wherein we should walk,and the thing that we should do.4 And Jeremiah the prophet, said unto them, I have heard; behold me! praying unto Yahweh your God according to your words,and it shall come to pass that the whole thing that Yahweh shall answer you, I will tell you, I will keep back from you, nothing.5 They, therefore said unto Jeremiah, Yahweh be against us, as a witness true and faithful,if according to all the word which Yahweh thy God shall send thee unto us, so we do not perform:6 whether for good or for ill, unto the voice of Yahweh our God for which we are sending thee unto him, will we hearken,to the end it may be well with us, because we will hearken unto the voice of Yahweh our God.7 And it came to pass at the end of ten days, that the word of Yahweh came unto Jeremiah.8 Then called he for Johanan son of Kareah, and for all the princes of the forces who were with himand for all the people from the least even unto the greatest;9 and said unto them, Thus, saith Yahweh, God of Israelunto whom ye sent me, to cause your supplication to fall prostrate before him:10 If ye will indeed abide, in this land, then will I build you up, and not pull ,for I have compassion as touching the calamity which I have caused you.11 Do not fear the face of the king of Babylon, of whose face ye are afraid,do not fear him, Urgeth Yahweh, for with you, am I, to save you, and to deliver you out of his hand:12 that I may grant you compassions and he may have compassion upon you,and suffer you to return unto your own soil.13 But, since ye are saying,We will not dwell in this land,nor hearken unto the voice of Yahweh your God:14 saying,No! for, into the land of Egypt, will we go, where we shall not see war, nor the sound of a horn, shall we hear,nor for bread, shall we be famished,there, then will we dwell15 Now, therefore, for this cause, hear ye the word of Yahweh, O remnant of Judah,Thus! saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel,If, ye do indeed set your faces to enter Egypt and do enter to sojourn there,16 then shall it come to pass that the sword which ye are fearing shall, there, overtake you, in the land of Egypt,and the famine which ye are dreading, shall, there, lay fast hold of you, in Egypt, and, there, shall ye die.17 So shall it be with all the men who have set their faces to enter Egypt to sojourn there, they shah die by sword, by famine or by pestilence,and they shall have neither survival nor escape, from the face of the calamity which I am about to bring in upon them.18 ForThus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel,Just as mine anger and mine indignation have been poured out upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall mine indignation be poured out upon you when ye enter into Egypt,thus shall ye become a curse, and an astonishment and a contempt and a reproach, and ye shall no more see this place.19 Yahweh hath spoken concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah, Do not enter into Egypt: Know certainly, that I have taken you to witness to-day.20 For ye have deceived yourselves at the cost of your lives, for, ye yourselves, sent me unto Yahweh your God, saying,Pray thou in our behalf, unto Yahweh our God,and according to all that Yahweh our God shall say, so, tell us and we will do it.21 Therefore have I told you to-day,and yet ye have not hearkened unto the voice of Yahweh your God, even in any thing for which he hath sent me unto you.22 Now, therefore, know ye certainly, that by sword, by famine, or by pestilence, shall ye die,in the place whither ye have desired to go, to sojourn.

1 Então, chegaram todos os príncipes dos exércitos, e Joanã, filho de Careá, e Jezanias, filho de Hosaías, e todo o povo, desde o menor até ao maior, 2 e disseram a Jeremias, o profeta: Caia, agora, a nossa súplica diante de ti, e roga por nós ao Senhor, teu Deus, por todo este resto; porque de muitos restamos uns poucos, como veem os teus olhos; 3 para que o Senhor, teu Deus, nos ensine o caminho por onde havemos de andar e aquilo que havemos de fazer. 4 E disse-lhes Jeremias, o profeta: Eu vos ouvi; eis que orarei ao Senhor, vosso Deus, conforme as vossas palavras; e seja o que for que o Senhor vos responder, eu vo-lo declararei; não vos ocultarei nada. 5 Então, eles disseram a Jeremias: Seja o Senhor entre nós testemunha da verdade e fidelidade, se não fizermos conforme toda a palavra com que te enviar a nós o Senhor, teu Deus. 6 Seja ela boa ou seja má, à voz do Senhor, nosso Deus, a quem te enviamos, obedeceremos, para que nos suceda bem, obedecendo à voz do Senhor, nosso Deus.

7 E sucedeu que, ao fim de dez dias, veio a palavra do Senhor a Jeremias. 8 Então, chamou a Joanã, filho de Careá, e a todos os príncipes dos exércitos que havia com ele, e a todo o povo, desde o menor até ao maior, 9 e disse-lhes: Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel, a quem me enviastes, para lançar a vossa súplica diante dele: 10 Se de boa mente ficardes nesta terra, então, vos edificarei e não vos derribarei; e vos plantarei e não vos arrancarei, porque estou arrependido do mal que vos tenho feito. 11 Não temais o rei da Babilônia, a quem vós temeis; não o temais, diz o Senhor, porque eu sou convosco, para vos salvar e para vos fazer livrar das suas mãos. 12 E vos farei misericórdia, para que ele tenha misericórdia de vós e vos faça voltar à vossa terra. 13 Mas, se vós disserdes: Não ficaremos nesta terra, não obedecendo à voz do Senhor, vosso Deus, 14 dizendo: Não; antes, iremos à terra do Egito, onde não veremos guerra, nem ouviremos som de trombeta, nem teremos fome de pão, e ali ficaremos. 15 Nesse caso, ouvi a palavra do Senhor, ó resto de Judá; assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Se vós, absolutamente, puserdes o vosso rosto para entrardes no Egito e entrardes para lá peregrinar; 16 acontecerá, então, que a espada que vós temeis ali vos alcançará na terra do Egito, e a fome que vós receais estará convosco no Egito, e ali morrereis. 17 Assim será com todos os homens que puseram o seu rosto para entrarem no Egito, a fim de lá peregrinarem: morrerão à espada, à fome e da peste; e deles não haverá quem reste e escape do mal que eu farei vir sobre eles.

18 Porque assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Como se derramaram a minha ira e a minha indignação sobre os habitantes de Jerusalém, assim se derramará a minha indignação sobre vós, quando entrardes no Egito; e sereis uma maldição, e um espanto, e uma execração, e um opróbrio e não vereis mais este lugar. 19 Falou o Senhor acerca de vós, ó resto de Judá: Não entreis no Egito. Sabei, decerto, que testifiquei contra vós, hoje. 20 Porquanto, enganastes a vossa alma, pois me enviastes ao Senhor, vosso Deus, dizendo: Ora por nós ao Senhor, nosso Deus; e, conforme tudo o que disser o Senhor, Deus nosso, declara-no-lo assim, e o faremos. 21 E vo-lo tenho declarado hoje; mas não destes ouvidos à voz do Senhor, vosso Deus, em coisa alguma pela qual ele me enviou a vós. 22 Agora, pois, sabei, por certo, que à espada, à fome e da peste morrereis no mesmo lugar onde desejastes entrar, para lá peregrinardes.
