1 Ko te tangata e aroha ana ki te kupu ako e aroha ana ki te mātauranga;
nā, ko te tangata e kore e pai kia rīria tōna hē, he pōauau tērā.
2 Ko te tangata pai ka whiwhi ki tā Ihowā whakapai;
otiia ka whakahēngia e ia te tangata ngārahu kino.
3 E kore tā te tangata e ū i te kino;
nā, ko te pakiaka o te hunga tika, e kore tērā e whakakorikoria.
4 He wahine e ū ana tōna pai, hei karauna tērā ki tāna tāne;
tēnā ko te wahine i whakamā ai ia, hei pirau tērā i roto i ōna wheua.
5 Ko ngā whakaaro o te hunga tika he tika;
ko ngā whakaaro ia o te hunga kino he tinihanga.
6 Ko ngā kupu a te hunga kino e mea ana kia tauwhanga i te toto;
mā te māngai ia o te hunga tika rātou ka ora ai.
7 Ka hurihia iho te hunga kino, ā, kore iho;
ko te whare ia o te hunga tika ka tū tonu.
8 Ka rite ki tōna ngārahu te whakamoemiti mō te tangata;
ko te ngākau parori kē ia ka whakahāweatia.
9 Ko te tangata e whakahāweatia ana, he pononga nei tāna,
pai ake ia i te tangata e whakanui ana i a ia anō, ā, kāhore āna kai.
10 Ko te tangata tika e whakaaro ana ia ki te ora o tāna kararehe;
he nanakia ia ngā mahi atawhai a te hunga kino.
11 Ko te tangata e mahi ana i tōna oneone ka mākona ia i te taro;
tēnā ko te tangata e whai ana i te hunga tekateka noa, kāhore ōna ngākau mahara.
12 Ko tā te tangata kino e minamina ai ko te kupenga a te hunga kino;
e whai hua ana ia te pakiaka o te hunga tika.
13 Ka mau te tangata kino i te pokanga kētanga o ōna ngutu;
ka puta mai ia te tangata tika i roto i te raru.
14 Mā ngā hua o tōna māngai ka mākona ai te tangata i te pai;
ka riro mai anō i te tangata ngā utu o tā ōna ringa.
15 He tika tonu ki ōna kanohi ake te ara o te kūware;
e whakarongo ana ia te tangata whakaaro nui ki te kupu whakatūpato.
16 Ko te kūware, e mōhiotia wawetia ana tōna riri;
e hīpokina ana ia te whakamā e te tangata ngārahu tūpato.
17 Ko tā te tangata kōrero pono he whakapuaki i te tika;
ko tā te kaiwhakaatu teka ia he tinihanga.
18 He tangata anō ko āna kōrero maka noa, me te mea ko ngā werohanga a te hoari;
he rongoā ia te arero o te hunga whakaaro nui.
19 Ka ū tonu te ngutu pono ā ake ake;
mō nāianei kau ia te arero teka.
20 He tinihanga kei roto i te ngākau o ngā kaitito i te kino;
he koa ia tō ngā kaiwhakatakoto kōrero e mau ai te rongo.
21 E kore tētahi kino e pā ki te tangata tika;
engari te hunga kino ka kī i te kino.
22 He mea whakarihariha ki a Ihowā ngā ngutu teka;
ko tāna e āhuareka ai ko ngā kaimahi i te pono.
23 Hīpoki ai te tangata tūpato i te mātauranga;
e karanga nui ana ia te ngākau o ngā kūware i te kūwaretanga.
24 Mō te ringa o ngā uaua te kīngitanga;
hei hōmai takoha ia te māngere.
25 Mā te pōuri i roto i te ngākau o te tangata e piko ai ia;
mā te kupu pai ia ka mārama ai.
26 Hira ake te tangata tika i tōna hoa;
te hunga kino ia ka whakapōhēhētia e tō rātou ara anō.
27 Kāhore te tangata māngere e tunu i tāna mea i hopu ai;
mā te tangata uaua ia te taonga utu nui a ngā tāngata.
28 He ora kei te ara o te tika;
kāhore hoki he mate i tōna ara.
1 Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge;
But he that hateth reproof is brutish.
2 A good man shall obtain favor of Jehovah;
But a man of wicked devices will he condemn.
3 A man shall not be established by wickedness;
But the root of the righteous shall not be moved.
4 A worthy woman is the crown of her husband;
But she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are just;
But the counsels of the wicked are deceit.
6 The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood;
But the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not;
But the house of the righteous shall stand.
8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom;
But he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.
9 Better is he that is lightly esteemed, and hath a servant,
Than he that honoreth himself, and lacketh bread.
10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast;
But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
11 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread;
But he that followeth after vain persons is void of understanding.
12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men;
But the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.
13 In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man;
But the righteous shall come out of trouble.
14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth;
And the doings of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes;
But he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.
16 A fool’s vexation is presently known;
But a prudent man concealeth shame.
17 He that uttereth truth showeth forth righteousness;
But a false witness, deceit.
18 There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword;
But the tongue of the wise is health.
19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever;
But a lying tongue is but for a moment.
20 Deceit is in the heart of them that devise evil;
But to the counsellors of peace is joy.
21 There shall no mischief happen to the righteous;
But the wicked shall be filled with evil.
22 Lying lips are an abomination to Jehovah;
But they that deal truly are his delight.
23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge;
But the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule;
But the slothful shall be put under taskwork.
25 Heaviness in the heart of a man maketh it stoop;
But a good word maketh it glad.
26 The righteous is a guide to his neighbor;
But the way of the wicked causeth them to err.
27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting;
But the precious substance of men is to the diligent.
28 In the way of righteousness is life;
And in the pathway thereof there is no death.
