Provérbios 19

1 He pai kē te rawakore e haere ana i runga i tōna tapatahi,

i te ngutu whanokē, i te whakaarokore.

2 Nā, ehara hoki i te mea pai kia kaua he mātauranga mō te wairua;

ā, ko te tangata e hohoro ana ōna waewae, ka hara.

3 E whakaparoritia ana te ara o te tangata e tōna wairangi;

e amuamu ana hoki tōna ngākau ki a Ihowā.

4 Mā te rawa ka tokomaha atu ai ngā hoa aroha;

e wehea atu ana ia, te rawakore i tōna hoa aroha.

5 E kore te kaiwhakapae teka e whakaharakoretia;

e kore hoki e mawhiti te tangata kōrero teka.

6 He tokomaha e whai kia manakohia e te tangata ringa mahora;

he hoa aroha hoki ngā tāngata katoa nō te tangata e hōmai mea ana.

7 E kino ana ngā tēina katoa o te rawakore ki a ia;

nā, nui kē atu te mataratanga atu o ōna hoa i a ia!

Whai noa āna kupu i a rātou,

heoi kua riro rātou.

8 Ko te tangata e mea ana ki te whakaaro nui mōna, e aroha ana ki tōna wairua ake;

ko te tangata e pupuri ana i te mātauranga, ka tūtaki ki te pai.

9 E kore te kaiwhakapae teka e whakaharakoretia;

ka hunā hoki te tangata kōrero teka.

10 E kore e tau te noho rangatira ki te whakaarokore;

he makere rawa te noho ko te pononga hei rangatira mō ngā rangatira.

11 Ko te ngārahu tūpato ka pupuri i tōna riri;

ā, hei whakakorōria mōna te whakarere noa iho i te hē.

12 Ko te riri o te kīngi rite tonu ki te hāmama o te raiona;

ko tana manako ia ānō he tōmairangi i runga i te tarutaru.

13 He aituā mō tōna pāpā te tamaiti whakaarokore;

ā, ko ngā ngangare a te wahine, me te māturuturu pūputu tonu.

14 He whare, he taonga i tuku iho i ngā mātua;

ko te hoa wahine mahara i a Ihowā.

15 Mā te māngere e mea kia moe i te moe reka;

ka matekai hoki te wairua o te rōrā.

16 Ko te tangata e pupuri ana i te whakahau e pupuri ana i tōna wairua;

engari, ko te tangata kore whakaaro ki ōna ara ka mate.

17 Ko te tangata e ohaoha ana ki te rawakore e whakatārewa moni ana ki a Ihowā,

ā, ka utua ki a ia tāna mahi atawhai.

18 Pākia tāu tama, i te mea kua whai manakohanga;

kaua hoki tōu ngākau e whai tonu i te whakangaromanga mōna.

19 Ko te tangata riri nui māna e waha tōna hē;

ki te whakaora hoki koe i a ia, ka waiho tonu tēnā hei mahi māu.

20 Whakarongo ki te kupu tohutohu, tahuri mai hoki ki te ako,

kia whai whakaaro ai koe i tōu mutunga iho.

21 He maha ngā whakaaro i roto i te ngākau o te tangata;

e tū tonu ana ia tā Ihowā tikanga.

22 Ko te hiahia o te tangata te aronga o tana atawhai;

engari te rawakore i te tangata teka.

23 Ko te wehi ki a Ihowā te ara ki te ora;

ā, ko te tangata kei a ia tērā, ka noho mākona;

e kore tētahi hē e pā ki a ia.

24 E kuhua ana e te māngere tōna ringa ki te rīhi,

e kore rawa nei e whakahokia e ia ki tōna māngai.

25 Pākia te tangata whakahī, ā, ka tūpato ngā kūware;

ākona hoki te tangata mahara, ā, ka mōhio ia ki te mātauranga.

26 Ko te tangata e pāhua ana i tōna pāpā, e pei atu ana hoki i tōna whaea,

he tama ia e whakamā ai, e ingoa kino ai hoki.

27 Kāti, e tāku tama, te whakarongo ki te ako

hei mea kau e kotiti atu ai i ngā kupu o te mātauranga.

28 E whakahī ana te kaiwhakaatu hē ki te whakawā;

e horomia ana hoki te kino e te māngai o te hunga kino.

he whiu mō te tuarā o ngā whakaarokore.

1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity

Than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good;

And he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

3 The foolishness of man subverteth his way;

And his heart fretteth against Jehovah.

4 Wealth addeth many friends;

But the poor is separated from his friend.

5 A false witness shall not be unpunished;

And he that uttereth lies shall not escape.

6 Many will entreat the favor of the liberal man;

And every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him:

How much more do his friends go far from him!

He pursueth them with words, but they are gone.

8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul:

He that keepeth understanding shall find good.

9 A false witness shall not be unpunished;

And he that uttereth lies shall perish.

10 Delicate living is not seemly for a fool;

Much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

11 The discretion of a man maketh him slow to anger;

And it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

12 The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion;

But his favor is as dew upon the grass.

13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father;

And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

14 House and riches are an inheritance from fathers;

But a prudent wife is from Jehovah.

15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep;

And the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his soul;

But he that is careless of his ways shall die.

17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto Jehovah,

And his good deed will he pay him again.

18 Chasten thy son, seeing there is hope;

And set not thy heart on his destruction.

19 A man of great wrath shall bear the penalty;

For if thou deliver him, thou must do it yet again.

20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction,

That thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

21 There are many devices in a man’s heart;

But the counsel of Jehovah, that shall stand.

22 That which maketh a man to be desired is his kindness;

And a poor man is better than a liar.

23 The fear of Jehovah tendeth to life;

And he that hath it shall abide satisfied;

He shall not be visited with evil.

24 The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish,

And will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

25 Smite a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;

And reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

26 He that doeth violence to his father, and chaseth away his mother,

Is a son that causeth shame and bringeth reproach.

27 Cease, my son, to hear instruction

Only to err from the words of knowledge.

28 A worthless witness mocketh at justice;

And the mouth of the wicked swalloweth iniquity.

29 Judgments are prepared for scoffers,

And stripes for the back of fools.
