Provérbios 24

1 Kei hae koe ki te hunga kino,

kaua hoki e hiahia hei hoa mō rātou.

2 Ko tā tō rātou ngākau hoki e whakaaro ai, he tūkino,

ko tā ō rātou ngutu e kōrero ai, he whanokē.

3 Mā te whakaaro nui ka hangā ai te whare,

ā, mā te mātauranga ka ū ai.

4 Mā te mōhio hoki ka kī ai ngā rūma

i ngā taonga utu nui katoa, i ngā mea āhuareka.

5 He kaha te tangata whakaaro nui;

āe, e whakanuia ana e te tangata mōhio te kaha.

6 Nā, kia pai te ngārahu ina anga koe ki te whawhai;

kei te tokomaha hoki o ngā kaiwhakatakoto whakaaro te ora.

7 He tiketike rawa te whakaaro nui mō te wairangi;

e kore e kuihi tōna māngai i te kūwaha.

8 Ko te tangata e whakaaro ana ki te kino,

ka kīia he whanokē.

9 He hara te whakaaro wairangi;

he mea whakarihariha anō ki te tangata te tangata whakahī.

10 Ki te ngoikore koe i te rā o te hē,

he iti tōu kaha.

11 Whakaorangia te hunga e kawea atu ana ki te mate,

ā, puritia mai hoki e koe te hunga e meatia ana kia whakamatea.

12 Ki te mea koe, "Nanā, kīhai tēnei i mōhiotia e mātou";

kāhore ianei te kaipāuna ngākau i te whakaaro ki tērā?

Ā, ko te kaitiaki o tōu wairua, kāhore rānei ia e mōhio,

e kore rānei e hōmai e ia ki te tangata kia rite ki tāna mahi?

13 Kainga, e tāku tama, te honi, he pai hoki;

me te honikoma, he mea reka hoki ki tōu māngai.

14 Ka mōhio ai koe ki te whakaaro nui, he mea ki tōu wairua;

ki te kitea e koe, he tukunga iho anō tōna, e kore hoki tāu i tūmanako ai e hātepea.

15 Kaua, e te tangata kino, e whanga ki te nohoanga o te tangata tika;

kei tūkino koe ki tōna takotoranga.

16 E hinga ana hoki te tangata tika, e whitu hinganga, ka ara ake anō;

ka whakatakā ia te hunga kino e te hē.

17 Kaua e harakoa ki te hinga tōu hoariri,

kaua hoki tōu ngākau e hari ina taka ia;

18 kei kite a Ihowā, ā, ka hē ki tāna titiro,

ā, ka tahuri atu tōna riri i a ia.

19 Kei mamae koe, he mea mō ngā kaimahi i te kino,

kei hae hoki ki te hunga kino.

20 Kāhore hoki he mutunga pai ki te tangata kino;

ka keto hoki te rama a te hunga kino.

21 E tāku tama, e wehi ki a Ihowā, ki te kīngi hoki;

ā, kaua e whakauru noa atu ki te hunga e mea ana ki te whakaputa kē.

22 Nō te mea ka puta tata te aituā mō rātou;

ā, ko wai ka mōhio ki te whakangaromanga ō rāua tokorua?

23 He whakatauki anō hoki ēnei nā te hunga whakaaro nui:

Ehara i te mea pai kia whakaaro ki te kanohi tāngata ina whakawā.

24 Ko te tangata e mea ana ki te tangata kino, "He tika koe,"

ka kanga ngā iwi ki a ia, ka whakarihariha ngā tauiwi ki a ia.

25 Otiia ka koa ngā ngākau o te hunga e rīria ai tōna hē,

ka tau iho anō hoki te manaaki pai ki runga ki a rātou.

26 Ka kihia e ia ngā ngutu e whakahoki ana

i ngā kupu tika.

27 Meinga kia takoto pai tāu mahi i waho,

kia rite hoki hei meatanga māu i te māra;

muri iho ka hanga i tōu whare.

28 Kaua koe e tū hei kaiwhakaatu hē mō tōu hoa, i te mea kāhore he take;

ā, kaua e tinihanga ki ōu ngutu.

29 Kaua e kī, "Ka meatia anō e ahau ki a ia tāna i mea ai ki ahau;

ka rite ki tā te tangata mahi tāku e whakahoki ai ki a ia."

30 I haere ahau i te taha o te māra a te māngere,

i te taha hoki o te māra wāina a te tangata kāhore ōna mahara;

31 nā, kua tupuria katoatia e te tātarāmoa,

kapi tonu te mata o te māra i te ongaonga,

ā, ko tō reira taiepa kōhatu kua oti te wāhi.

32 Kātahi ahau ka titiro, ka āta whakaaroaro;

ka kite ahau, ā, ka hopu mai hei ako mōku.

33 Kia iti ake nei te wāhi e parangia ai, kia iti ake nei te moe,

kia iti ake te kōtuituitanga o ngā ringa ka moe ai.

34 Ka pērā te haerenga mai o tōu mūhore ānō he kaipāhua;

o tōu rawakore hoki ānō he tangata mau patu.

1 Be not thou envious against evil men;

Neither desire to be with them:

2 For their heart studieth oppression,

And their lips talk of mischief.

3 Through wisdom is a house builded;

And by understanding it is established;

4 And by knowledge are the chambers filled

With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 A wise man is strong;

Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might.

6 For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war;

And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

7 Wisdom is too high for a fool:

He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8 He that deviseth to do evil,

Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

9 The thought of foolishness is sin;

And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 If thou faint in the day of adversity,

Thy strength is small.

11 Deliver them that are carried away unto death,

And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.

12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this;

Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it?

And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it?

And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

13 My son, eat thou honey, for it is good;

And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste:

14 So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul;

If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward,

And thy hope shall not be cut off.

15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous;

Destroy not his resting-place:

16 For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again;

But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth,

And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

18 Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him,

And he turn away his wrath from him.

19 Fret not thyself because of evil-doers;

Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man;

The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

21 My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king;

And company not with them that are given to change:

22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly;

And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?

23 These also are sayings of the wise.

To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous,

Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;

25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight,

And a good blessing shall come upon them.

26 He kisseth the lips

Who giveth a right answer.

27 Prepare thy work without,

And make it ready for thee in the field;

And afterwards build thy house.

28 Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause;

And deceive not with thy lips.

29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me;

I will render to the man according to his work.

30 I went by the field of the sluggard,

And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns,

The face thereof was covered with nettles,

And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32 Then I beheld, and considered well;

I saw, and received instruction:

33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,

A little folding of the hands to sleep;

34 So shall thy poverty come as a robber,

And thy want as an armed man.
