1 Samuel 11

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you."

2 Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be gouged out. I will make this dishonor all Israel."

3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you." 4 Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people, then all the people lifted up their voice and wept.

5 Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, "What ails the people that they weep?" They told him the words of the men of Jabesh. 6 God’s Spirit came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger burned hot. 7 He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen." The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man. 8 He counted them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9 They said to the messengers who came, "Tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.’" The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you." 11 On the next day, Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the middle of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

12 The people said to Samuel, "Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!"

13 Saul said, "No man shall be put to death today; for today Yahweh has rescued Israel."

14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come! Let’s go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there." 15 All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal. There they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Saul besegrar ammoniterna

1 Ammoniten Nahash*11:1Ammoniten NahashBetyder "orm". Ammoniterna bodde öster om Jordan och hade anfallit israeliterna tidigare under Jeftas tid (se Dom 11). drog upp och belägrade Jabesh i Gilead. Då sade alla män i Jabesh till Nahash: "Slut förbund med oss, så ska vi tjäna dig." 2 Ammoniten Nahash svarade dem: "På detta villkor ska jag sluta förbund med er: att jag får sticka ut högra ögat på er alla och därmed dra skam över hela Israel." 3 De äldste i Jabesh sade till honom: "Ge oss sju dagars frist, så att vi kan skicka sändebud över hela Israels land. Om då ingen vill hjälpa oss, kommer vi ut till dig." 4 Sändebuden kom till Sauls Gibea och berättade detta för folket. Då brast allt folket ut i gråt.

5 Just då kom Saul gående från åkern bakom sina oxar, och Saul frågade: "Vad är det med folket, eftersom de gråter?" De berättade för honom vad männen från Jabesh hade sagt. 6 *Dom 3:10, 6:34, 13:25, 14:6, 1 Sam 10:10. När Saul hörde detta föll Guds Ande över honom, och han blev mycket vred. 7 *Dom 20:1. Han tog ett par oxar och styckade dem och sände omkring*11:7styckade dem och sände omkringKnyter an till hur folket kallades till samling under den mörka domartiden (Dom 19:29). styckena med sändebuden över hela Israels land och lät säga: "Den som inte drar ut efter Saul och Samuel, med hans oxar ska det göras på detta sätt." Då kom fruktan från Herren över folket så att de drog ut som en enda man. 8 Och Saul inmönstrade dem i Besek*11:8BesekLåg troligen på Jordans västra sida, ca 2-3 mil väster om Jabesh i Gilead vilket innebar en ansträngande nattlig ilmarsch (vers 11)., och Israels barn utgjorde då 300 000 och Juda män 30 000.

9 De sade till sändebuden som hade kommit: "Så ska ni säga till männen i Jabesh i Gilead: I morgon ska ni få hjälp, när solen bränner som hetast." Sändebuden kom och meddelade männen i Jabesh detta, och de blev glada över beskedet. 10 Då meddelade männen i Jabesh ammoniterna: "I morgon ska vi komma ut till er, och ni får då göra med oss vad ni finner för gott."

11 Dagen därefter delade Saul upp folket i tre grupper. De trängde in i lägret vid morgonväkten och nergjorde ammoniterna ända tills dagen blev som hetast. De som kom undan blev så kringspridda att inte två av dem kom undan tillsammans.

12 *1 Sam 10:27, Luk 19:27. Då sade folket till Samuel: "Vilka var de som sade: Skulle Saul bli kung över oss? Ta hit dessa män så att vi får döda dem." 13 *1 Sam 14:45, 19:5, 2 Sam 19:22. Men Saul sade: "Denna dag ska ingen dödas, för i dag har Herren gett seger åt Israel." 14 Samuel sade till folket: "Kom, låt oss gå till Gilgal och förnya kungadömet där." 15 Då gick allt folket till Gilgal och gjorde Saul till kung där inför Herren i Gilgal. De offrade gemenskapsoffer inför Herrens ansikte, och Saul och alla Israels män var mycket glada.
