| 1 | ¶ Fiz aliança com os meus olhos; como, pois, os fixaria numa virgem? | I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin? |
| 2 | Que porção teria eu do Deus lá de cima, ou que herança do Todo-Poderoso desde as alturas? | For what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high? |
| 3 | Porventura não é a perdição para o perverso, o desastre para os que praticam iniqüidade? | Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity? |
| 4 | Ou não vê ele os meus caminhos, e não conta todos os meus passos? | Doth not he see my ways, And number all my steps? |
| 5 | Se andei com falsidade, e se o meu pé se apressou para o engano | If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit |
| 6 | (Pese-me em balanças fiéis, e saberá Deus a minha sinceridade), | (Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity); |
| 7 | Se os meus passos se desviaram do caminho, e se o meu coração segue os meus olhos, e se às minhas mãos se apegou qualquer coisa, | If my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands: |
| 8 | Então semeie eu e outro coma, e seja a minha descendência arrancada até à raiz. | Then let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out. |
| 9 | ¶ Se o meu coração se deixou seduzir por uma mulher, ou se eu armei traições à porta do meu próximo, | If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door; |
| 10 | Então moa minha mulher para outro, e outros se encurvem sobre ela, | Then let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her. |
| 11 | Porque é uma infâmia, e é delito pertencente aos juízes. | For that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: |
| 12 | Porque é fogo que consome até à perdição, e desarraigaria toda a minha renda. | For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase. |
| 13 | Se desprezei o direito do meu servo ou da minha serva, quando eles contendiam comigo; | If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me; |
| 14 | Então que faria eu quando Deus se levantasse? E, inquirindo a causa, que lhe responderia? | What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? |
| 15 | Aquele que me formou no ventre não o fez também a ele? Ou não nos formou do mesmo modo na madre? | Did not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb? |
| 16 | ¶ Se retive o que os pobres desejavam, ou fiz desfalecer os olhos da viúva, | If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, |
| 17 | Ou se, sozinho comi o meu bocado, e o órfão não comeu dele | Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof |
| 18 | (Porque desde a minha mocidade cresceu comigo como com seu pai, e fui o guia da viúva desde o ventre de minha mãe), | (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb); |
| 19 | Se alguém vi perecer por falta de roupa, e ao necessitado por não ter coberta, | If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering; |
| 20 | Se os seus lombos não me abençoaram, se ele não se aquentava com as peles dos meus cordeiros, | If his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep; |
| 21 | Se eu levantei a minha mão contra o órfão, porquanto na porta via a minha ajuda, | If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate: |
| 22 | Então caia do ombro a minha espádua, e separe-se o meu braço do osso. | Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone. |
| 23 | Porque o castigo de Deus era para mim um assombro, e eu não podia suportar a sua grandeza. | For calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing. |
| 24 | ¶ Se no ouro pus a minha esperança, ou disse ao ouro fino: Tu és a minha confiança; | If I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, [Thou art] my confidence; |
| 25 | Se me alegrei de que era muita a minha riqueza, e de que a minha mão tinha alcançado muito; | If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much; |
| 26 | Se olhei para o sol, quando resplandecia, ou para a lua, caminhando gloriosa, | If I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness, |
| 27 | E o meu coração se deixou enganar em oculto, e a minha boca beijou a minha mão, | And my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand: |
| 28 | Também isto seria delito à punição de juízes; pois assim negaria a Deus que está lá em cima. | This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above. |
| 29 | Se me alegrei da desgraça do que me tem ódio, e se exultei quando o mal o atingiu | If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him; |
| 30 | (Também não deixei pecar a minha boca, desejando a sua morte com maldição); | (Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse); |
| 31 | Se a gente da minha tenda não disse: Ah! quem nos dará da sua carne? Nunca nos fartaríamos dela. | If the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat? |
| 32 | O estrangeiro não passava a noite na rua; as minhas portas abria ao viandante. | (The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller); |
| 33 | ¶ Se, como Adão, encobri as minhas transgressões, ocultando o meu delito no meu seio; | If like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom, |
| 34 | Porque eu temia a grande multidão, e o desprezo das famílias me apavorava, e eu me calei, e não saí da porta; | Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door- |
| 35 | Ah! quem me dera um que me ouvisse! Eis que o meu desejo é que o Todo-Poderoso me responda, e que o meu adversário escreva um livro. | Oh that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written! |
| 36 | Por certo que o levaria sobre o meu ombro, sobre mim o ataria por coroa. | Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown: |
| 37 | O número dos meus passos lhe mostraria; como príncipe me chegaria a ele. | I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him. |
| 38 | Se a minha terra clamar contra mim, e se os seus sulcos juntamente chorarem, | If my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together; |
| 39 | Se comi os seus frutos sem dinheiro, e sufoquei a alma dos seus donos, | If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life: |
| 40 | Por trigo me produza cardos, e por cevada joio. Acabaram-se as palavras de Jó. | Let thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended. |
