| 1 | What shall we then say that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? | Mit mondunk tehát, hogy Ábrahám a mi atyánk nyert volna test szerint? |
| 2 | For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God. | Mert ha Ábrahám cselekedetekbõl igazult meg, van mivel dicsekedjék, de nem az Isten elõtt. |
| 3 | For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. | Mert mit mond az írás: Hitt pedig Ábrahám az Istennek, és tulajdoníttaték az õ néki igazságul. |
| 4 | Now to him that worketh, is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. | Annak pedig, a ki munkálkodik, a jutalom nem tulajdoníttatik kegyelembõl, hanem tartozás szerint; |
| 5 | But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. | Ellenben annak, a ki nem munkálkodik, hanem hisz abban, a ki az istentelent megigazítja, az õ hite tulajdoníttatik igazságul. |
| 6 | Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man to whom God imputeth righteousness without works, | A mint Dávid is boldognak mondja azt az embert, a kinek az Isten igazságot tulajdonít cselekedetek nélkül. |
| 7 | Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. | Boldogok, a kiknek megbocsáttattak az õ hamisságaik, és a kiknek elfedeztettek az õ bûneik. |
| 8 | Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. | Boldog ember az, a kinek az Úr bûnt nem tulajdonít. |
| 9 | Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? For we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. | Ez a boldogság tehát a zsidónak, vagy a pogánynak is [tulajdoníttatik- ]é? Mert azt mondjuk, hogy Ábrahámnak a hit tulajdoníttaték igazságul. |
| 10 | How then was it reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. | Miképen tulajdoníttaték tehát? Körülmetélt vagy körülmetéletlen állapotában? Nem körülmetélt, hanem körülmetéletlen állapotában. |
| 11 | And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith, which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they are not circumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also; | És a körülmetélkedés jegyét körülmetéletlenségében [tanusított] hite igazságának pecsétjéül nyerte: hogy atyja legyen mindazoknak, a kik körülmetéletlen létökre hisznek, hogy azoknak is tulajdoníttassék az igazság; |
| 12 | And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had being yet uncircumcised. | És [hogy] atyja [legyen] a körülmetélteknek is, azoknak, a kik nemcsak körülmetélkednek, hanem követik is a mi atyánknak Ábrahámnak körülmetéletlenségében [tanusított] hitének nyomdokait. |
| 13 | For the promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. | Mert nem a törvény által adatott az ígéret Ábrahámnak, vagy az õ magvának, hogy e világnak örököse lesz, hanem a hitnek igazsága által. |
| 14 | For if they who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of no effect. | Mert ha azok az örökösök, kik a törvénybõl valók, hiábavalóvá lett a hit, és haszontalanná az ígéret: |
| 15 | Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. | Mert a törvény haragot nemz: a hol pedig nincsen törvény, ott törvény ellen való cselekedet sincsen. |
| 16 | Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all; | Azért hitbõl, hogy kegyelembõl [legyen;] hogy erõs legyen az ígéret az egész magnak; nemcsak a törvénybõl valónak, hanem az Ábrahám hitébõl valónak is, a ki mindnyájunknak atyánk |
| 17 | (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations) before him whom he believed, even God, who reviveth the dead, and calleth those things which are not, as though they were. | (A mint meg van írva, hogy sok nép atyjává tettelek téged ) az elõtt, az Isten elõtt, a kiben hitt, a ki a holtakat megeleveníti, és azokat, a melyek nincsenek, elõszólítja mint meglevõket. |
| 18 | Who against hope believed with hope, that he should become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. | A ki reménység ellenére reménykedve hitte, hogy sok népnek atyjává lesz, a szerint, a mint megmondatott: Így lészen a te magod. |
| 19 | And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb. | És hitében erõs lévén, nem gondolt az õ már elhalt testére, mintegy százesztendõs lévén, sem Sárának elhalt méhére; |
| 20 | He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; | Az Istennek ígéretében sem kételkedett hitetlenséggel, hanem erõs volt a hitben, dicsõséget adván az Istennek, |
| 21 | And being fully persuaded, that what he had promised, he was able also to perform. | És teljesen elhitte, hogy a mit õ ígért, meg is cselekedheti. |
| 22 | And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. | Azért is tulajdoníttaték néki igazságul. |
| 23 | Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; | De nemcsak õ érette iratott meg, hogy tulajdoníttaték néki [igazságul,] |
| 24 | But for us also, to whom it will be imputed, if we believe on him that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, | Hanem mi érettünk is, a kiknek majd tulajdoníttatik, azoknak tudniillik, a kik hisznek Abban, a ki feltámasztotta a mi Urunkat a Jézust a halálból, |
| 25 | Who was delivered for our offenses, and raised again for our justification. | Ki a mi bûneinkért [halálra] adatott, és feltámasztatott a mi megigazulásunkért. |
