1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel, and reigned nine years. 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, yet not as the kings of Israel that were before him. 3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and brought him tribute. 4 And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. 5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away unto Assyria, and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

7 And it was so, because the children of Israel had sinned against Jehovah their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, 8 and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they made. 9 And the children of Israel did secretly things that were not right against Jehovah their God: and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city; 10 and they set them up pillars and Asherim upon every high hill, and under every green tree; 11 and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the nations whom Jehovah carried away before them; and they wrought wicked things to provoke Jehovah to anger; 12 and they served idols, whereof Jehovah had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. 13 Yet Jehovah testified unto Israel, and unto Judah, by every prophet, and every seer, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. 14 Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but hardened their neck, like to the neck of their fathers, who believed not in Jehovah their God. 15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified unto them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the nations that were round about them, concerning whom Jehovah had charged them that they should not do like them. 16 And they forsook all the commandments of Jehovah their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. 17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger. 18 Therefore Jehovah was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of Jehovah their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. 20 And Jehovah rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. 21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drove Israel from following Jehovah, and made them sin a great sin. 22 And the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; 23 until Jehovah removed Israel out of his sight, as he spake by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

24 And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avva, and from Hamath and Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. 25 And so it was, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not Jehovah: therefore Jehovah sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast carried away, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the law of the god of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the law of the god of the land.

27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the law of the god of the land. 28 So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Beth-el, and taught them how they should fear Jehovah. 29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt. 30 And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burnt their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 So they feared Jehovah, and made unto them from among themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. 33 They feared Jehovah, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.

34 Unto this day they do after the former manner: they fear not Jehovah, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law or after the commandment which Jehovah commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; 35 with whom Jehovah had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them: 36 but Jehovah, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm, him shall ye fear, and unto him shall ye bow yourselves, and to him shall ye sacrifice: 37 and the statutes and the ordinances, and the law and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods: 38 and the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods: 39 but Jehovah your God shall ye fear; and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies. 40 Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. 41 So these nations feared Jehovah, and served their graven images; their children likewise, and their children’s children, as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

7 Lucrul acesta s-a întâmplat pentru că copiii lui Israel au păcătuit împotriva Domnului Dumnezeului lor, care-i scosese din țara Egiptului, de sub mâna lui Faraon, împăratul Egiptului, și pentru că s-au închinat la alți dumnezei. 8 Au urmat*Lev. 18:3.Deut. 18:9. Cap. 16:3. obiceiurile neamurilor pe care Domnul le izgonise dinaintea copiilor lui Israel și obiceiurile rânduite de împărații lui Israel. 9 Copiii lui Israel au făcut pe ascuns împotriva Domnului Dumnezeului lor lucruri care nu sunt bune. Și-au zidit înălțimi în toate cetățile lor, de la turnurile*Cap. 18:8. străjerilor până la cetățile întărite. 10 Și-au ridicat*1 Împ. 14:23.Is. 57:5. stâlpi idolești și astartee*Exod 34:13.Deut. 16:21.Mica 5:14. pe orice*Deut. 12:2. Cap. 16:4. deal și sub orice copac verde. 11 Și acolo au ars tămâie pe toate înălțimile, ca și neamurile pe care le izgonise Domnul dinaintea lor, și au făcut lucruri rele, prin care au mâniat pe Domnul. 12 Au slujit idolilor*Exod 20:3,4.Lev. 26:1.Deut. 5:7,8., despre care Domnul le zisese: „Să*Deut. 4:19. nu faceți lucrul acesta!" 13 Domnul a înștiințat pe Israel și Iuda prin toți prorocii Lui, prin toți văzătorii*1 Sam. 9:9., și le-a zis: „Întoarceți-vă*Ier. 18:11;25:5;35:15. de la căile voastre cele rele și păziți poruncile și rânduielile Mele, urmând în totul legea pe care am dat-o părinților voștri și pe care v-am trimis-o prin robii Mei, prorocii." 14 Dar ei n-au ascultat, și-au înțepenit*Deut. 31:27.Prov. 29:1. grumazul, ca și părinții lor, care nu crezuseră în Domnul Dumnezeul lor. 15 N-au vrut să știe de legile Lui, de legământul*Deut. 29:25. pe care-l făcuse cu părinții lor și de înștiințările pe care li le dăduse. S-au luat după lucruri de nimic*Deut. 32:21.1 Împ. 16:13.1 Cor. 8:4. – și ei înșiși n-au fost decât*Ps. 115:8.Rom. 1:21. nimic – și după neamurile în mijlocul cărora trăiau, măcar că Domnul le poruncise să nu*Deut. 12:30,31. se ia după ele. 16 Au părăsit toate poruncile Domnului Dumnezeului lor, și-au făcut*Exod 32:8.1 Împ. 12:28. viței turnați, au făcut idoli de-ai Astarteei*1 Împ. 14:15,23;15:13;16:33., s-au închinat înaintea întregii oștiri a cerurilor și au slujit*1 Împ. 16:31;22:53. Cap. 11:18. lui Baal. 17 Au trecut*Lev. 18:21. Cap. 16:3.Ezec. 23:37. prin foc pe fiii și fiicele lor, s-au dedat la*Deut. 18:10. ghicire și vrăjitorii și s-au vândut*1 Împ. 21:20. ca să facă ce este rău înaintea Domnului, mâniindu-L. 18 De aceea Domnul S-a mâniat foarte tare împotriva lui Israel și i-a îndepărtat de la Fața Lui. N-a rămas*1 Împ. 11:13,32. decât seminția lui Iuda, 19 și chiar Iuda*Ier. 3:8. nu păzise poruncile Domnului Dumnezeului lui, ci se luase după obiceiurile rânduite de Israel. 20 Domnul a lepădat tot neamul lui Israel; i-a smerit, i-a dat*Cap. 13:3;15:29. în mâinile jefuitorilor și a sfârșit prin a-i izgoni dinaintea Feței Lui. 21 Căci Israel*1 Împ. 11:11,31. se dezlipise de casa lui David și făcuse împărat*1 Împ. 12:20,28. pe Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, care-l abătuse de la Domnul și făcuse pe Israel să săvârșească un mare păcat. 22 Copiii lui Israel se dăduseră la toate păcatele pe care le făcuse Ieroboam; nu s-au abătut de la ele 23 până ce Domnul a izgonit pe Israel dinaintea Lui, cum*1 Împ. 14:16. vestise prin toți slujitorii Săi proroci. Și Israel a fost*Vers. 6. dus în robie departe de țara lui, în Asiria, unde a rămas până în ziua de azi.

24 Împăratul Asiriei a adus*Ezra 4:2,10. oameni din Babilon, din*Vers. 30. Cuta, din Ava*Cap. 18:34., din Hamat și din Sefarvaim și i-a așezat în cetățile Samariei în locul copiilor lui Israel. Au pus stăpânire pe Samaria și au locuit în cetățile ei. 25 Când au început să locuiască aici, nu se temeau de Domnul, și Domnul a trimis împotriva lor niște lei, care-i omorau. 26 Atunci au spus împăratului Asiriei: „Neamurile pe care le-ai strămutat și le-ai așezat în cetățile Samariei nu cunosc felul în care să slujească Dumnezeului țării, și El a trimis împotriva lor niște lei care le omoară, pentru că nu cunosc felul în care trebuie să slujească Dumnezeului țării." 27 Împăratul Asiriei a dat următoarea poruncă: „Trimiteți pe unul din preoții pe care i-ați luat de acolo în robie; să plece să se așeze acolo și să le învețe felul în care să slujească Dumnezeului țării." 28 Unul din preoții care fuseseră luați robi din Samaria a venit de s-a așezat la Betel și le-a învățat cum să se teamă de Domnul. 29 Dar neamurile și-au făcut, fiecare, dumnezeii lor în cetățile pe care le locuiau și i-au așezat în templele idolești din înălțimile zidite de samariteni. 30 Oamenii din Babilon*Vers. 24. au făcut pe Sucot-Benot, oamenii din Cut au făcut pe Nergal, cei din Hamat au făcut pe Așima, 31 cei din Ava*Ezra 4:9. au făcut pe Nibhaz și Tartac, cei din Sefarvaim își ardeau*Lev. 18:21.Deut. 12:31. copiii în foc în cinstea lui Adramelec și Anamelec, dumnezeii din Sefarvaim. 32 Totodată se închinau și Domnului și și-au făcut preoți ai înălțimilor, luați*1 Împ. 12:31. din tot poporul: preoții aceștia aduceau pentru ei jertfe în templele din înălțimi. 33 Astfel se închinau*Ţef. 1:5. Domnului, dar slujeau în același timp și dumnezeilor lor, după obiceiul neamurilor de unde fuseseră mutați. 34 Până în ziua de astăzi își urmează ei obiceiurile de la început: nu se închină Domnului și nu se țin nici de legile și rânduielile lor, nici de legile și poruncile date de Domnul copiilor lui Iacov, căruia i-a pus numele*Gen. 32:28;35:10.1 Împ. 11:31. Israel. 35 Domnul făcuse legământ cu ei și le dăduse porunca aceasta: „Să nu vă temeți*Jud. 6:10. de alți dumnezei; să nu vă închinați*Exod 20:5. înaintea lor, să nu le slujiți și să nu le aduceți jertfe. 36 Ci să vă temeți de Domnul, care v-a scos din țara Egiptului cu o mare putere și cu brațul întins*Exod 6:6.; înaintea Lui să vă*Deut. 10:20. închinați și Lui să-I aduceți jertfe. 37 Să păziți și să împliniți*Deut. 5:32. totdeauna învățăturile, rânduielile, legea și poruncile pe care vi le-a scris El și să nu vă temeți de alți dumnezei. 38 Să nu*Deut. 4:23. uitați legământul pe care l-am făcut cu voi și să nu vă temeți de alți dumnezei. 39 Ci să vă temeți de Domnul Dumnezeul vostru, și El vă va izbăvi din mâna tuturor vrăjmașilor voștri." 40 Ei n-au ascultat și au urmat obiceiurile lor de la început. 41 Neamurile acestea*Vers. 32,33. se temeau de Domnul și slujeau și chipurilor lor cioplite, și copiii lor și copiii copiilor lor fac până în ziua de azi ce au făcut părinții lor.
