1 Detta ord kom till Jeremia från Herren. Han sade: 2 "Res dig och gå ner till krukmakarens*18:2krukmakarenHebr. josér betyder också "skapare" (jfr Jes 45:9). hus. Där ska jag låta dig höra mina ord." 3 Då gick jag ner till krukmakarens hus och såg att han arbetade på drejskivan. 4 Och kärlet som han höll på att göra av leran misslyckades i hans hand. Då började han om och gjorde det till ett annat kärl, så som han ville ha det.

5 Och Herrens ord kom till mig. Han sade: 6 *Jes 45:9, Rom 9:21. "Kan jag inte göra med er, ni av Israels hus, så som den krukmakaren gör? säger Herren. Som leran i krukmakarens hand, så är ni i min hand, Israels hus. 7 *Jer 1:10, 31:28. Ena gången talar jag om ett folk och ett rike att jag tänker rycka upp, bryta ner och förgöra det. 8 *Jer 26:19, Hes 18:21, 33:11, Joel 2:13, Jona 3:10. Men om folket som jag talat om vänder om från sin ondska, ångrar jag det onda som jag hade tänkt göra mot dem.

9 En annan gång talar jag om ett folk och ett rike att jag tänker bygga upp och plantera det. 10 *1 Mos 6:6, 1 Kung 11:11. Men om de då gör det som är ont i mina ögon och inte hör min röst, då ångrar jag det goda som jag hade sagt att jag skulle göra mot dem.

11 *2 Kung 17:13, Jer 7:3, 25:5, 35:15. Säg nu till Juda män och till Jerusalems invånare: Så säger Herren: Se, jag bereder en olycka för er och tänker ut en plan mot er. Vänd därför om, var och en från sin onda väg, och ändra ert liv och era gärningar. 12 *Jes 65:2, Jer 2:25, 7:24, 16:12, 44:16f. Men de kommer att svara: Det är lönlöst. Vi tänker följa våra egna tankar och göra var och en efter sitt onda och hårda hjärta."

13 *Jer 2:10, Hos 6:10. Därför säger Herren så:

15 *Jer 2:32, 3:21, 6:16. Men mitt folk har glömt mig

och tänder rökelse åt avgudar,

som har fått dem på fall

på deras vägar,

de urgamla vägarna.

De slår in på obanade vägar

och stigar.

16 *Jer 19:8, 48:27. Så blir deras land öde

och ständigt utsatt för hån.

Alla som går förbi ska förundra sig

och skaka på huvudet.

17 Som en östanvind

ska jag skingra dem för fienden.

Jag ska vända ryggen åt dem

och inte ansiktet

på deras olyckas dag.

18 *Hes 7:26, Mal 2:7. Men de sade: "Kom, vi tänker ut planer mot Jeremia. För prästerna ska inte komma till korta med sin undervisning, inte den vise med sitt råd eller profeten med sitt ord. Kom, vi fäller honom med våra tungor och struntar i alla hans ord."

19 Herre, lyssna på mig

och hör vad mina motståndare

säger.

De har grävt en grop

för att ta mitt liv!

Tänk på hur jag har stått

inför ditt ansikte

och manat gott för dem

för att vända bort din vrede

från dem.

21 *Ps 63:11, 109:10f, Jer 20:4. Överlämna därför deras barn

åt svälten

och utlämna dem själva

åt svärdet,

så att deras hustrur

blir barnlösa och änkor,

deras män dödade av pesten

och deras unga män slagna

med svärd i striden.

22 Låt sorgerop höras från deras hus

när du plötsligt skickar rövarband

över dem,

för de grävde en grop

för att fånga mig

och lade ut snaror för mina fötter.

23 *Neh 4:5, Ps 5:11. Men du, Herre, känner

alla deras planer att döda mig.

Förlåt dem inte deras missgärning

och utplåna inte deras synd.

Låt dem komma på fall inför dig.

Grip in mot dem

på din vredes dag.

18 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet.
