1 Ora, quando Jacó viu que havia trigo no Egito, Jacó disse a seus filhos: Por que ficais olhando uns para os outros?
2 E ele disse: Eis que eu ouvi que há trigo no Egito; descei para lá e comprai para nós dali, para que vivamos, e não morramos.
3 E os dez irmãos de José desceram para comprar trigo no Egito.
4 Mas a Benjamim, irmão de José, Jacó não enviou com seus irmãos, pois ele disse: Para que porventura não lhe aconteça alguma desgraça.
5 E os filhos de Israel vieram comprar trigo entre os que vieram, porque a fome estava na terra de Canaã.
6 E José era o governador da terra, e era ele que vendia a todas as pessoas da terra; e os irmãos de José vieram, e se curvaram diante dele com sua face em terra.
7 E José viu seus irmãos, e ele os reconheceu, mas se fez de estranho para eles, e falou asperamente com eles. E ele lhes disse: De onde vindes? E eles disseram: Da terra de Canaã para comprar alimento.
8 E José reconheceu seus irmãos, mas eles não o reconheceram.
9 E José lembrou-se dos sonhos que havia sonhado sobre eles, e lhes disse: Sois espiões. Viestes para ver a nudez da terra.
10 E eles lhe disseram: Não, meu senhor, mas para comprar alimento vieram teus servos.
11 Somos todos filhos de um homem; somos homens verdadeiros; teus servos não são espiões.
12 E ele lhes disse: Não, mas para ver a nudez da terra é que viestes.
13 E eles disseram: Teus servos são doze irmãos, os filhos de um homem na terra de Canaã. E eis que o mais jovem está hoje com nosso pai, e um não está.
14 E José lhes disse: Foi isso que eu vos falei, dizendo: Sois espiões.
15 Por isto sereis provados: Pela vida de Faraó não saireis daqui, a não ser que vosso irmão mais jovem venha para cá.
16 Enviai um de vós, e que ele traga vosso irmão, e vós sereis mantidos na prisão, para que vossas palavras sejam provadas, se há alguma verdade em vós. Ou senão pela vida de Faraó, verdadeiramente sois espiões.
17 E ele os colocou todos juntos na prisão por três dias.
18 E José lhes disse no terceiro dia: Fazei isto, e vivei, pois eu temo a Deus:
19 Se sois homens verdadeiros, deixai que um de vossos irmãos fique preso na casa de vossa prisão. Ide vós, levai trigo para a fome de suas casas,
20 mas trazei-me vosso irmão mais jovem. Assim, vossas palavras serão verificadas, e vós não morrereis. E assim eles fizeram.
21 E eles disseram uns aos outros: Somos realmente culpados a respeito do nosso irmão, quando vimos a angústia da sua alma, quando nos implorou, e não o escutamos; por isso veio essa desgraça sobre nós.
22 E Rúben lhes respondeu, dizendo: Não vos falei, dizendo: Não pequeis contra o menino, e vós não ouvistes? Por isso, eis que o seu sangue também é requerido.
23 E eles não sabiam que José os entendia, pois ele falava com eles por meio de um intérprete.
24 E ele se afastou deles, e chorou, e voltou a eles novamente, e falou com eles, e tomou deles Simeão, e o amarrou diante dos seus olhos.
25 Então José ordenou que enchessem de trigo seus sacos, e que devolvessem a cada homem seu dinheiro, a cada um em seu saco, e que lhes dessem provisão para o caminho. E assim lhes fizeram.
26 E eles carregaram os seus jumentos com trigo, e partiram dali.
27 E quando um deles abriu o seu saco para dar forragem ao seu jumento na hospedaria, ele viu o seu dinheiro, pois eis que estava na boca do seu saco.
28 E ele disse a seus irmãos: Meu dinheiro foi devolvido, e eis que está no meu saco. E o coração deles desfaleceu, e eles ficaram temerosos, dizendo uns aos outros: O que é isto que Deus nos fez?
29 E eles vieram a Jacó, seu pai, à terra de Canaã, e lhe contaram tudo que lhes acontecera, dizendo:
30 O homem, que é o senhor da terra, falou asperamente conosco, e nos tomou por espiões da terra.
31 E lhe dissemos: Somos homens verdadeiros, não somos espiões;
32 somos doze irmãos, filhos de nosso pai; um não está, e o mais jovem está hoje com nosso pai na terra de Canaã.
33 E o homem, senhor da terra, nos disse: Por isto eu saberei que sois homens verdadeiros: Deixai um de vossos irmãos aqui comigo, e levai alimento para a fome de vossas famílias, e parti.
34 Trazei-me vosso irmão mais jovem. Então eu saberei que não sois espiões, mas que sois homens verdadeiros. Assim eu vos entregarei vosso irmão, e negociareis na terra.
35 E aconteceu que, quando eles esvaziaram seus sacos, eis que cada homem tinha o seu pacote de dinheiro no seu saco; e quando eles e seu pai viram os seus pacotes de dinheiro, ficaram temerosos.
36 E Jacó, seu pai, disse-lhes: Vós me privastes de meus filhos: José não está, e Simeão não está, e ainda quereis tomar Benjamim. Todas estas coisas estão contra mim.
37 E Rúben falou com seu pai, dizendo: Mata meus dois filhos, se eu não o trouxer a ti. Entrega-o em minha mão, e eu o trarei para ti novamente.
38 E ele disse: Meu filho não descerá convosco, pois seu irmão está morto, e ele foi deixado só. Se alguma desgraça cair sobre ele no caminho em que fordes, então, com tristeza, levareis meus cabelos grisalhos à sepultura.
1 And when Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, Why do you look upon one another?
2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy for us from there, so that we may live and not die.
3 And Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.
4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob did not send with his brothers. For he said, Lest perhaps mischief happen to him.
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
6 And Joseph [was] the potentate over the land. He was] the one selling to all the people of the earth. And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down themselves before him, their faces to the earth.
7 And Joseph saw his brothers, and he knew them, but remained a stranger to them, and spoke roughly to them. And he said to them, Where do you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
8 And Joseph knew his brothers, but they did not know him.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said to them, You [are] spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.
10 And they said to him, No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.
11 We [are] all one man's sons. We are honest; your servants are not spies.
12 And he said to them, No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.
13 And they said, Your servants [are] twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. And behold, the youngest [is] this day with our father, and one [is] not.
14 And Joseph said to them, That [is] what I spoke to you, saying, You [are] spies!
15 By this you shall be proved; [as] Pharaoh lives you shall not go forth from here unless your youngest brother comes here.
16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, and you shall be kept in prison so that your words may be proved, whether [any] truth [is] in you. Or else, [as] Pharaoh lives, surely you [are] spies.
17 And he put them together into custody three days.
18 And Joseph said to them the third day, Do [this] and live. I fear God.
19 If you [are] honest, let one of your brothers be bound in the house of your prison. You go carry grain [for] the famine of your houses.
20 But bring your youngest brother to me, and let your words be] confirmed, be proved true, and you shall not die. And they did so.
21 And they said one to another, We [are] truly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he begged us, and we would not hear. Therefore this distress has come upon us.
22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you saying, Do not sin against the youth? And you would not hear. Therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
23 And they did not know that Joseph understood, for the interpreter was between them.
24 And he turned from them, and wept. And he returned to them again and talked with them, and took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
25 Then Joseph commanded their sacks to be filled [with] grain, and returned their silver, each into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. And so he did to them.
26 And they loaded their asses with grain, and departed from there.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass fodder in the inn, he saw his silver. For, behold, it [was] in the mouth of the sack.
28 And he said to his brothers, My silver has been put back. And, also look in my sack. And their hearts failed, and they each were afraid, saying to one another, What [is] this God has done to us?
29 And they came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and told him all that happened to them, saying,
30 The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.
31 And we said to him, We [are] honest, we [are] not spies.
32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One [is] not, and the youngest [is] this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
33 And the man, the lord of the country, said to us, By this I shall know that you [are] honest. Leave one, your brother, with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and go.
34 And bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you [are] not spies, but that you [are] honest. And I will deliver you your brother, and you shall trade in the land.
35 And it happened they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of silver [was] in his sack. And when they and their father saw the bundles of silver, they were afraid.
36 And Jacob their father said to them, You have bereaved me. Joseph [is] not, and Simeon [is] not, and you will take Benjamin. All these things are against me.
37 And Reuben spoke to his father, saying, Kill my two sons if I do not bring him to you. Deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to you again.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you. For his brother is dead, and he is left alone. And [if] mischief should happen to him by the way you go, then you shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
