1 Nu te făli cu ziua de mîne, căci nu ştii ce poate aduce o zi. -2 Să te laude altul, nu gura ta, un străin, nu buzele tale.3 Piatra este grea, şi nisipul este greu, dar supărarea pe care o pricinuieşte nebunul este mai grea de cît amîndouă. -4 Furia este fără milă şi mînia năvalnică, dar cine poate sta împotriva geloziei? -5 Mai bine o mustrare pe faţă de cît o prietenie ascunsă. -6 Rănile făcute de un prieten dovedesc credincioşia lui, dar sărutările unui vrăjmaş sînt mincinoase. -7 Sătulul calcă în picioare fagurul de miere, dar pentru cel flămînd toate amărăciunile sînt dulci. -8 Ca pasărea plecată din cuibul ei, aşa este omul plecat din locul său.9 Cum înveseleşte untdelemnul şi tămîia inima, aşa de dulci sînt sfaturile pline de dragoste ale unui prieten. -10 Nu părăsi pe prietenul tău şi pe prietenul tatălui tău, dar nu intra în casa fratelui tău în ziua necazului tău: mai bine un vecin aproape de cît un frate departe. -11 Fiule, fii înţelept, şi înveseleşte-mi inima, şi atunci voi putea răspunde celui ce mă batjocoreşte. -12 Omul chibzuit vede răul şi se ascunde; dar proştii merg spre el şi sînt pedepsiţi. -13 Ia -i haina, căci s'a pus chezaş pentru altul, ia -l zălog în locul unei străine. -14 Binecuvîntarea aproapelui cu glas tare dis de dimineaţă, este privită ca un blestem. -15 O straşină, care picură necurmat într'o zi de ploaie, şi o nevastă gîlcevitoare sînt tot una.16 Cine o opreşte, parcă opreşte vîntul, şi parcă ţine untdelemnul în mîna dreaptă. -17 După cum ferul ascute ferul, tot aşa şi omul aţîţă mînia altui om. -18 Cine îngrijeşte de un smochin va mînca din rodul lui, şi cine-şi păzeşte stăpînul va fi preţuit. -19 Cum răspunde în apă faţa la faţă, aşa răspunde inima omului inimii omului. -20 După cum locuinţa morţilor şi adîncul nu se pot sătura, tot aşa nici ochii omului nu se pot sătura. -21 Ce este tigaia pentru lămurirea argintului şi cuptorul pentru lămurirea aurului: aceea este bunul nume pentru un om. -22 Pe nebun chiar dacă l-ai pisa cu pisălogul în piuă, în mijlocul grăunţelor, nebunia tot n'ar ieşi din el. -23 Îngrijeşte bine de oile tale, şi ia seama la turmele tale.24 Căci nici o bogăţie nu ţine vecinic, şi nici cununa nu rămîne pe vecie. -25 Dupăce se ridică fînul, se arată verdeaţa nouă, şi ierburile de pe munţi sînt strînse. -26 Mieii sînt pentru îmbrăcăminte, şi ţapii pentru plata ogorului;27 laptele caprelor ţi-ajunge pentru hrana ta, a casei tale, şi pentru întreţinerea slujnicelor tale.

1 Boast not thyself of to-morrow, For thou knowest not what a day bringeth forth.2 Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, A stranger, and not thine own lips.3 A stone [is] heavy, and the sand [is] heavy, And the anger of a fool Is heavier than they both.4 Fury [is] fierce, and anger [is] overflowing, And who standeth before jealousy?5 Better [is] open reproof than hidden love.6 Faithful are the wounds of a lover, And abundant the kisses of an enemy.7 A satiated soul treadeth down a honeycomb, And [to] a hungry soul every bitter thing [is] sweet.8 As a bird wandering from her nest, So [is] a man wandering from his place.9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, And the sweetness of one`s friend -- from counsel of the soul.10 Thine own friend, and the friend of thy father, forsake not, And the house of thy brother enter not In a day of thy calamity, Better [is] a near neighbour than a brother afar off.11 Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart. And I return my reproacher a word.12 The prudent hath seen the evil, he is hidden, The simple have passed on, they are punished.13 Take his garment, when a stranger hath been surety, And for a strange woman pledge it.14 Whoso is saluting his friend with a loud voice, In the morning rising early, A light thing it is reckoned to him.15 A continual dropping in a day of rain, And a woman of contentions are alike,16 Whoso is hiding her hath hidden the wind, And the ointment of his right hand calleth out.17 Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend.18 The keeper of a fig-tree eateth its fruit, And the preserver of his master is honoured.19 As [in] water the face [is] to face, So the heart of man to man.20 Sheol and destruction are not satisfied, And the eyes of man are not satisfied.21 A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And a man according to his praise.22 If thou dost beat the foolish in a mortar, Among washed things -- with a pestle, His folly turneth not aside from off him.23 Know well the face of thy flock, Set thy heart to the droves,24 For riches [are] not to the age, Nor a crown to generation and generation.25 Revealed was the hay, and seen the tender grass, And gathered the herbs of mountains.26 Lambs [are] for thy clothing, And the price of the field [are] he-goats,27 And a sufficiency of goats` milk [is] for thy bread, For bread to thy house, and life to thy damsels!
