God the Creator

1 My soul, bless the  Lord!

Lord my God, you are very great;

you are clothed with majesty and splendor.  * 104:1 Ps 93:1; 103:22

2 He wraps himself in light as if it were a robe,

spreading out the sky like a canopy,  * 104:2 Jb 9:8; Is 40:22

3 laying the beams of his palace

on the waters above,  * 104:3 Am 9:6

making the clouds his chariot,  * 104:3 Is 19:1

walking on the wings of the wind,  * 104:3 Ps 18:10

4 and making the winds his messengers,  * 104:4 Or angels

flames of fire his servants.  * 104:4 Ps 148:8; Heb 1:7

5 He established the earth on its foundations;

it will never be shaken.  * 104:5 Jb 38:4; Ps 24:2; 93:1; 96:10

6 You covered it with the deep

as if it were a garment;

the water stood above the mountains.  * 104:6 Gn 7:19

7 At your rebuke the water fled;

at the sound of your thunder they hurried away  * 104:7 Ps 18:15; 106:9  —

8 mountains rose and valleys sank  * 104:7–8 Or away. They flowed over the mountains and went down valleys  —

to the place you established for them.  * 104:8 Ps 65:6; Am 4:13

9 You set a boundary they cannot cross;

they will never cover the earth again.  * 104:9 Jb 26:10; 38:10–11; Jr 5:22

10 He causes the springs to gush into the valleys;

they flow between the mountains.  * 104:10 Ps 107:35; Is 41:18

11 They supply water for every wild beast;

the wild donkeys quench their thirst.  * 104:11 Jb 39:5

12 The birds of the sky live beside the springs;

they make their voices heard among the foliage.  * 104:12 Mt 8:20

13 He waters the mountains from his palace;

the earth is satisfied by the fruit of your labor.  * 104:13 Jb 5:10; Ps 65:9

14 He causes grass to grow for the livestock

and provides crops for man to cultivate,

producing food from the earth,  * 104:14 Jb 28:5; Ps 147:8

15 wine that makes human hearts glad —

making his face shine with oil —

and bread that sustains human hearts.  * 104:15 Gn 18:5; Ps 141:5

16 The trees of the  Lord flourish,  * 104:16 Lit are satisfied

the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.  * 104:16 Nm 24:6

17 There the birds make their nests;

storks make their homes in the pine trees.  * 104:17 Lv 11:19

18 The high mountains are for the wild goats;

the cliffs are a refuge for hyraxes.  * 104:18 Lv 11:5; Pr 30:26

19 He made the moon to mark the  * 104:19 Lit moon for  festivals;  * 104:19 Or the appointed times

the sun knows when to set.  * 104:19 Gn 1:14; Ps 19:6; 74:16

20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night,

when all the forest animals stir.  * 104:20 Is 45:17

21 The young lions roar for their prey

and seek their food from God.  * 104:21 Jb 38:39

22 The sun rises; they go back

and lie down in their dens.  * 104:22 Jb 37:8

23 Man goes out to his work

and to his labor until evening.  * 104:23 Gn 3:19

24 How countless are your works,  Lord!

In wisdom you have made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures.  * 104:24 Lit possessions,* 104:24 Pr 3:19; Jr 10:12; 51:15

25 Here is the sea, vast and wide,

teeming with creatures beyond number —

living things both large and small.  * 104:25 Gn 1:21; Ps 69:34

26 There the ships move about,

and Leviathan, which you formed to play there.  * 104:26 Jb 41:1; Ps 74:14; Is 27:1

27 All of them wait for you

to give them their food at the right time.  * 104:27 Gn 1:30; Ps 136:25; 145:15; 147:9

28 When you give it to them,

they gather it;

when you open your hand,

they are satisfied with good things.  * 104:28 Ps 145:16

29 When you hide your face,

they are terrified;

when you take away their breath,

they die and return to the dust.  * 104:29 Jb 10:9; Ps 90:3

30 When you send your breath,  * 104:30 Or Spirit

they are created,  * 104:30 Gn 2:7

and you renew the surface of the ground.  * 104:30 Jb 33:4

31 May the glory of the  Lord endure forever;

may the Lord rejoice in his works.  * 104:31 Ps 72:17

32 He looks at the earth, and it trembles;

he touches the mountains,

and they pour out smoke.  * 104:32 Ex 19:18; Ps 144:5

33 I will sing to the  Lord all my life;

I will sing praise to my God while I live.  * 104:33 Ps 63:4; 146:2

34 May my meditation be pleasing to him;

I will rejoice in the  Lord.  * 104:34 Ps 19:14

35 May sinners vanish from the earth

and wicked people be no more.  * 104:35 Ps 37:10; 59:13
