God’s Deliverance of Israel

1 When Israel came out of Egypt —

the house of Jacob from a people

who spoke a foreign language  * 114:1 Ex 13:3; Ps 81:5  —

2 Judah became his sanctuary,

Israel, his dominion.  * 114:2 Ex 15:17; Ps 78:68–69

3 The sea looked and fled;  * 114:3 Ex 14:21; Ps 77:16

the Jordan turned back.  * 114:3 Jos 3:13–16

4 The mountains skipped like rams,

the hills, like lambs.  * 114:4 Ex 19:18; Ps 29:6

5 Why was it, sea, that you fled?

Jordan, that you turned back?  * 114:5 Hab 3:8

6 Mountains, that you skipped like rams?

7 Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,

at the presence of the God of Jacob,  * 114:7 Ps 96:9

8 who turned the rock into a pool,
