Thanksgiving for God’s Deliverance

1 Give thanks to the  Lord, for he is good;

his faithful love endures forever.  * 107:1 1Ch 16:34; Ps 100:5; 106:1

2 Let the redeemed of the  Lord  proclaim

that he has redeemed them from the power of the foe  * 107:2 Ps 78:42; 106:10

3 and has gathered them from the lands —

from the east and the west,

from the north and the south.  * 107:3 Is 11:12; 43:5; Ezk 20:34

4 Some wandered in the desolate wilderness,

finding no way to a city where they could live.  * 107:4 Nm 14:33; 32:13

5 They were hungry and thirsty;

their spirits failed  * 107:5 Lit their soul fainted within them.  * 107:5 Ps 77:3

6 Then they cried out to the  Lord in their trouble;

he rescued them from their distress.  * 107:6 Ps 106:44

7 He led them by the right path

to go to a city where they could live.  * 107:7 Jr 31:9

8 Let them give thanks to the  Lord

for his faithful love

and his wondrous works for all humanity.  * 107:8 Ps 75:1

9 For he has satisfied the thirsty

and filled the hungry with good things.  * 107:9 Ps 22:26; 34:10; Lk 1:53

10 Others sat in darkness and gloom  * 107:10 Or the shadow of death, also in v. 14  —

prisoners in cruel chains  * 107:10 Ps 102:20; Is 42:7; Lk 1:79  —

11 because they rebelled against God’s commands

and despised the counsel of the Most High.  * 107:11 2Ch 36:16; Ps 78:40; 106:7

12 He broke their spirits  * 107:12 Lit hearts with hard labor;

they stumbled, and there was no one to help.  * 107:12 Ex 6:9; Dt 26:6; Is 14:3

13 Then they cried out to the  Lord in their trouble;

he saved them from their distress.  * 107:13 Ex 2:23–25

14 He brought them out of darkness and gloom

and broke their chains apart.  * 107:14 Jr 2:20

15 Let them give thanks to the  Lord

for his faithful love

and his wondrous works for all humanity.  * 107:15 Ps 75:1

16 For he has broken down the bronze gates

and cut through the iron bars.  * 107:16 Is 45:1–2

17 Fools suffered affliction

because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities.  * 107:17 Jr 30:14–15

18 They loathed all food

and came near the gates of death.  * 107:18 Jb 33:20

19 Then they cried out to the  Lord in their trouble;

he saved them from their distress.  * 107:19 Nm 21:7–9

20 He sent his word and healed them;

he rescued them from their traps.

21 Let them give thanks to the  Lord

for his faithful love

and his wondrous works for all humanity.  * 107:21 Ps 75:1

22 Let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices

and announce his works with shouts of joy.  * 107:22 Ps 9:11; 105:43; 116:17

23 Others went to sea in ships,

conducting trade on the vast water.  * 107:23 Is 42:10

24 They saw the  Lord’s works,

his wondrous works in the deep.  * 107:24 Is 33:21

25 He spoke and raised a stormy wind

that stirred up the waves of the sea.  * 107:25 Lit of it,* 107:25 Ps 93:3–4; Ezk 26:19

26 Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths,

their courage  * 107:26 Lit souls melting away in anguish,  * 107:26 Ps 22:14; 119:28

27 they reeled and staggered like a drunkard,

and all their skill was useless.  * 107:27 Jb 12:25; Is 29:9

28 Then they cried out to the  Lord in their trouble,

and he brought them out of their distress.  * 107:28 Jnh 1:14; Mk 4:39

29 He stilled the storm to a whisper,

and the waves of the sea were hushed.  * 107:29 Ps 89:9; Mt 8:26; Lk 8:24

30 They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet.

Then he guided them to the harbor they longed for.  * 107:30 Ex 15:13; Ps 78:72

31 Let them give thanks to the  Lord

for his faithful love

and his wondrous works for all humanity.  * 107:31 Ps 75:1

32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people

and praise him in the council of the elders.  * 107:32 Ps 22:22,25

33 He turns rivers into desert,

springs into thirsty ground,  * 107:33 Is 42:15; 50:2

34 and fruitful land into salty wasteland,

because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.  * 107:34 Gn 19:24–28; Dt 29:23

35 He turns a desert into a pool,

dry land into springs.  * 107:35 Is 35:6–7; 41:18

36 He causes the hungry to settle there,

and they establish a city where they can live.  * 107:36 Ps 60:9; 146:7

37 They sow fields and plant vineyards

that yield a fruitful harvest.  * 107:37 Is 65:21; Am 9:14

38 He blesses them, and they multiply greatly;  * 107:38 Gn 12:2; Ex 1:7

he does not let their livestock decrease.  * 107:38 Dt 7:14

39 When they are diminished and are humbled

by cruel oppression and sorrow,  * 107:39 Ps 44:25

40 he pours contempt on nobles  * 107:40 Jb 12:21

and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.  * 107:40 Jb 12:24

41 But he lifts the needy out of their suffering  * 107:41 1Sm 2:8; Ps 113:7–8

and makes their families multiply like flocks.  * 107:41 Jb 21:11

42 The upright see it and rejoice,  * 107:42 Jb 22:19; Ps 64:10

and all injustice shuts its mouth.  * 107:42 Jb 5:16

43 Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things

and consider the  Lord’s acts of faithful love.  * 107:43 Ps 64:9; Hs 14:9
