Prayer against Enemies

A song. A psalm of Asaph. # 83:title 1Ch 16:5,7

1 God, do not keep silent.

Do not be deaf, God; do not be quiet.  * 83:1 Ps 28:1; 39:12; 115:5; 135:16; Is 62:1

2 See how your enemies make an uproar;

those who hate you have acted arrogantly.  * 83:2 Lit have lifted their head,* 83:2 Ps 2:1; Is 17:12

3 They devise clever schemes against your people;

they conspire against your treasured ones.  * 83:3 Jb 5:12–13; Ps 37:12; 64:2

4 They say, "Come, let’s wipe them out as a nation

so that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered."  * 83:4 Ps 41:5; Jr 11:19

5 For they have conspired with one mind;

they form an alliance  * 83:5 Lit they cut a covenant against you  * 83:5 Ps 2:2  —

6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,  * 83:6 Gn 25:12–16; Ps 137:7

Moab and the Hagrites,  * 83:6 1Ch 5:10; 2Ch 20:10

7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,  * 83:7 Jos 13:5; 1Sm 15:2

8 Even Assyria has joined them;

as you did with Sisera

10 They were destroyed at En-dor;

they became manure for the ground.  * 83:10 Jr 9:22; 16:4; 25:33

11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,  * 83:11 Jdg 7:25; 8:3

and all their tribal leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna,  * 83:11 Jdg 8:5–21

12 who said, "Let’s seize God’s pastures for ourselves."  * 83:12 2Ch 20:11

13 Make them like tumbleweed, my God,

like straw before the wind.  * 83:13 Jb 21:18; Ps 1:4; Is 17:13

14 As fire burns a forest,

as a flame blazes through mountains,  * 83:14 Is 9:18; 10:16–19

15 so pursue them with your tempest

and terrify them with your storm.  * 83:15 Jb 9:17; Ps 58:9

16 Cover their faces with shame

so that they will seek your name,  Lord.  * 83:16 Ps 35:26; 109:29; 132:18

17 Let them be put to shame and terrified forever;

let them perish in disgrace.  * 83:17 Ps 35:4; 70:2

18 May they know that you alone —

whose name is the  Lord  —

are the Most High over the whole earth.  * 83:18 Ps 97:9
