Coronation of the Son

1 Why  * 2:1–2 Ac 4:25–26 do the nations rage  * 2:1 Is 17:12–13

2 The kings of the earth take their stand,  * 2:2 Jr 49:19; 50:44

and the rulers conspire together

3 "Let’s tear off their chains

and throw their ropes off of us."  * 2:3 Is 58:6; Jr 5:5; Nah 1:13

4 The one enthroned  * 2:4 Lit who sits in heaven laughs;

the Lord ridicules them.  * 2:4 Ps 37:13; 59:8

5 Then he speaks to them in his anger

and terrifies them in his wrath:  * 2:5 Ps 90:7

6 "I have installed my king

on Zion, my holy mountain."  * 2:6 Ps 48:2; Is 24:23

7 I will declare the Lord’s decree.

He said to me, "You are my Son;  * 2:7 Or son, also in v. 12

8 Ask of me,

and I will make the nations your inheritance

and the ends of the earth your possession.  * 2:8 Jos 23:4; Ps 111:6

9 You will break them with an iron scepter;

you will shatter them like pottery."  * 2:8–9 Ps 89:23; Rv 2:26–27; 12:5; 19:15

10 So now, kings, be wise;

receive instruction, you judges of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe

and rejoice with trembling.  * 2:11 Heb 12:28

12 Pay homage to  * 2:12 Lit Kiss the Son or he will be angry

and you will perish in your rebellion,  * 2:12 Lit perish in the way,* 2:12 Jn 3:18

for his anger may ignite at any moment.  * 2:12 2Th 1:7–8

All who take refuge in him are happy.  * 2:12 Ps 5:11; 34:8,22
