Psalms 41

Victory in spite of Betrayal

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

1 Happy is one who is considerate of the poor;

the Lord will save him in a day of adversity.  * 41:1 Ps 82:3–4; Pr 14:21

2 The Lord will keep him and preserve him;

he will be blessed in the land.  * 41:2 Ps 37:22,28

You will not give him over to the desire of his enemies.  * 41:2 Ps 27:12

3 The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed;

you will heal him on the bed where he lies.  * 41:3 Jr 17:14

4 I said, "Lord, be gracious to me;

heal me, for I have sinned against you."  * 41:4 Ps 6:2; 51:4

5 My enemies speak maliciously about me:

"When will he die and be forgotten? "  * 41:5 Ps 38:12

6 When one of them comes to visit, he speaks deceitfully;

he stores up evil in his heart;

he goes out and talks.  * 41:6 Ps 12:2; 62:4; Pr 26:24–26

7 All who hate me whisper together about me;

they plan to harm me.  * 41:7 Ps 56:5

8 "Something awful has overwhelmed him,  * 41:8 Lit "A thing of worthlessness has been poured into him

and he won’t rise again from where he lies! "  * 41:8 Ps 71:10–11

9 Even my friend  * 41:9 Lit Even a man of my peace in whom I trusted,

one who ate my bread,

has raised his heel against me.  * 41:9 Jb 19:19; Ps 55:12–13; Jn 13:18

10 But you, Lord, be gracious to me and raise me up;

then I will repay them.  * 41:10 Ps 9:13

11 By this I know that you delight in me:  * 41:11 Ps 37:23

my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.  * 41:11 Ps 25:2

12 You supported me because of my integrity  * 41:12 Ps 37:17

and set me in your presence forever.  * 41:12 Ps 21:6

13 Blessed be the Lord  God of Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting.
