Psalms 106

Israel’s Unfaithfulness to God

1 Hallelujah!

Give thanks to the  Lord, for he is good;

his faithful love endures forever 106:1 1Ch 16:34,41; Ps 100:5

2 Who can declare the  Lordmighty acts

or proclaim all the praise due him 106:2 Ps 145:4,12; 150:2

3 How happy are those who uphold justice,

who practice righteousness at all times 106:3 Ps 15:2

4 Remember me, Lord,

when you show favor to your people 106:4 Ps 119:132

Come to me with your salvation

5 so that I may enjoy the prosperity

of your chosen ones,

rejoice in the joy of your nation,

and boast about your heritage 106:5 Dt 32:9; Ps 105:6,43

6 Both we and our ancestors have sinned;

we have done wrong and have acted wickedly 106:6 Lv 26:40; Jr 3:25; 14:20

7 Our ancestors in Egypt did not grasp

the significance of your wondrous works

or remember your many acts of faithful love;

instead, they rebelled by the sea — the Red Sea 106:7 Ex 14:10–12; Ps 78:17

8 Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,

to make his power known 106:8 Ex 9:16; Ezk 20:9

9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;

he led them through the depths as through desert 106:9 Ps 18:15; 104:7; Is 63:11–13

10 He saved them from the power of the adversary;

he redeemed them from the power of the enemy 106:10 Ex 14:30; Ps 107:2

11 Water covered their foes;

not one of them remained 106:11 Ex 14:27–28; 15:5; Ps 78:53

12 Then they believed his promises

and sang his praise 106:12 Ex 14:31; 15:1–21; Ps 105:43

13 They soon forgot his works

and would not wait for his counsel 106:13 Ex 15:24; Ps 78:11; 107:11

14 They were seized with craving in the wilderness

and tested God in the desert 106:14 Nm 11:4; Ps 78:18

15 He gave them what they asked for,

but sent wasting disease among them 106:15 Nm 11:31; Ps 78:29

16 In the camp they were envious of Moses

and of Aaron, the  Lordholy one 106:16 Nm 16:1–3

17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan;

it covered the assembly of Abiram 106:17 Nm 16:31–32; Dt 11:6

18 Fire blazed throughout their assembly;

flames consumed the wicked 106:18 Nm 16:35

19 At Horeb they made calf

and worshiped the cast metal image 106:19 Ex 32:4; Dt 9:8; Ac 7:41

20 They exchanged their glory  106:20 Alt Hb tradition reads his glory, or my glory, 106:20 = God

for the image of grass-eating ox 106:20 Jr 2:11; Rm 1:23

21 They forgot God their Savior,

who did great things in Egypt 106:21 Dt 10:21; Ps 78:11

22 wondrous works in the land of Ham 106:22 = Egypt

awe-inspiring acts at the Red Sea 106:22 Ps 105:27

23 So he said he would have destroyed them

if Moses his chosen one

had not stood before him in the breach

to turn his wrath away from destroying them 106:23 Ex 32:10; Dt 9:14; Ezk 20:8

24 They despised the pleasant land

and did not believe his promise 106:24 Nm 14:31; Dt 9:23; Heb 3:19

25 They grumbled in their tents

and did not listen to the  Lord 106:25 Nm 14:2; Dt 1:27

26 So he raised his hand against them with an oath

that he would make them fall in the desert  106:26 Nm 14:28–35; Ezk 20:15; Heb 3:11

27 and would disperse their descendants  106:27 Syr; MT reads would make their descendants fall

among the nations,

scattering them throughout the lands 106:27 Lv 26:33; Dt 4:27; Ps 44:11

28 They aligned themselves with Baal of Peor

and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods 106:28 Lit sacrifices for dead ones, 106:28 Nm 25:3; Dt 4:3; Hs 9:10

29 They angered the  Lord with their deeds,

and a plague broke out against them 106:29 Nm 25:4

30 But Phinehas stood up and intervened,

and the plague was stopped 106:30 Nm 25:7–8

31 It was credited to him as righteousness

throughout all generations to come 106:31 Gn 15:6; Nm 25:10–13

32 They angered the  Lord at the Waters of Meribah,

and Moses suffered  106:32 Lit and it was evil for Moses because of them 106:32 Nm 20:2–13; Ps 81:7

33 for they embittered his spirit 106:33 Some Hb mss, LXX, Syr, Jer; other Hb mss read they rebelled against his Spirit

and he spoke rashly with his lips 106:33 Ps 78:40; Is 63:10

34 They did not destroy the peoples

as the Lord had commanded them  106:34 Dt 7:2,16; Jdg 1:21,27–36

35 but mingled with the nations

and adopted their ways 106:35 Jdg 3:5–6

36 They served their idols,

which became snare to them 106:36 Dt 7:16; Jdg 2:12

37 They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons 106:37 Lv 17:7; Dt 32:17

38 They shed innocent blood

the blood of their sons and daughters

whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;

so the land became polluted with blood 106:38 Nm 35:33; Is 24:5

39 They defiled themselves by their actions

and prostituted themselves by their deeds 106:39 Lv 18:24; Ezk 20:18,30–31

40 Therefore the  Lordanger burned against his people,

and he abhorred his own inheritance 106:40 Dt 32:19; Ps 78:59

41 He handed them over to the nations;

those who hated them ruled over them 106:41 Jdg 2:14; Neh 9:27

42 Their enemies oppressed them,

and they were subdued under their power 106:42 Jdg 4:3; 10:12

43 He rescued them many times,

but they continued to rebel deliberately

and were beaten down by their iniquity 106:43 Jdg 2:16–18; Ps 81:12

44 When he heard their cry,

he took note of their distress 106:44 Jdg 3:3; 6:7; 10:10

45 remembered his covenant with them,

and relented according to the abundance

of his faithful love 106:45 Lv 26:42; Ps 105:8

46 He caused them to be pitied

before all their captors 106:46 1Kg 8:50; 2Ch 30:9; Ezr 9:9

47 Save us, Lord  our God,

and gather us from the nations,

so that we may give thanks to your holy name

and rejoice in your praise 106:47 Ps 107:3; 147:2

48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting 106:48 Ps 41:13; 72:18; 89:52

Let all the people say"Amen"

Hallelujah 106:47–48 1Ch 16:35–36
