The Blessing of the Lord
A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds a house,
its builders labor over it in vain; 127:1 Ps 78:69
unless the Lord watches over a city,
the watchman stays alert in vain. 127:1 Ps 121:4
2 In vain you get up early and stay up late,
working hard to have enough food —
yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves. 127:2 Or yes, he gives such things to his loved ones while they sleep, 127:2 Ps 3:5; 4:8; Pr 3:24
3 Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
offspring, a reward. 127:3 Dt 7:13; Ps 113:9
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth. 127:4 Ps 120:4
5 Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them. 127:5 Ps 128:2–3
They will never be put to shame
when they speak with their enemies at the city gate. 127:5 Jl 2:26–27
