The Lord Is Great

1 Hallelujah!

Praise the name of the  Lord.

Give praise, you servants of the  Lord* 135:1 Ps 113:1; 134:1

2 who stand in the house of the  Lord,

in the courts of the house of our God.  * 135:2 Ps 92:13; 116:19

3 Praise the Lord, for the  Lord is good;

sing praise to his name, for it is delightful.  * 135:3 Ps 100:5; 147:1

4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself,

Israel as his treasured possession.  * 135:4 Ex 19:5; Dt 7:6–7; 10:15

5 For I know that the  Lord is great;

our Lord is greater than all gods.  * 135:5 Ps 95:3; 97:9

6 The Lord does whatever he pleases

in heaven and on earth,

in the seas and all the depths.  * 135:6 Ps 115:3; Is 45:7; Lm 3:37–38; Dn 4:35

7 He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.

He makes lightning for the rain

and brings the wind from his storehouses.  * 135:7 Jb 28:25–26; Jr 10:13; 51:16

8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,

both people and animals.  * 135:8 Ex 12:12; Ps 78:51; 105:36

9 He sent signs and wonders against you, Egypt,

against Pharaoh and all his officials.  * 135:9 Dt 6:22; Ps 78:43

10 He struck down many nations

and slaughtered mighty kings:  * 135:10 Ps 44:2; 136:17–22

11 Sihon king of the Amorites,

Og king of Bashan,

and all the kings of Canaan.  * 135:11 Nm 21:21–35

12 He gave their land as an inheritance,

an inheritance to his people Israel.  * 135:12 Dt 29:8; Ps 78:55

13 Lord, your name endures forever,

your reputation, Lord,

through all generations.  * 135:13 Ex 3:15; Ps 102:12

14 For the Lord will vindicate his people

and have compassion on his servants.  * 135:14 Dt 32:36; Ps 90:13; 106:46

15 The idols of the nations are of silver and gold,

made by human hands.  * 135:15 2Kg 19:18; Is 37:19

16 They have mouths but cannot speak,  * 135:16 Hab 2:18

eyes, but cannot see.

17 They have ears but cannot hear;

indeed, there is no breath in their mouths.  * 135:16–17 Is 46:7

18 Those who make them are just like them,

as are all who trust in them.  * 135:15–18 Ps 115:4–11

19 House of Israel, bless the  Lord!  * 135:19 Ps 115:9; 118:2

House of Aaron, bless the  Lord!  * 135:19 Ps 115:10; 118:3

20 House of Levi, bless the  Lord!

You who revere the  Lord, bless the  Lord!  * 135:20 Ps 22:23; 115:11; 118:4

21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion;  * 135:21 Ps 128:5

he dwells in Jerusalem.  * 135:21 Ps 132:13–14
