Psalms 33

Praise to the Creator

1 Rejoice in the  Lord, you righteous ones;

praise from the upright is beautiful.  * 33:1 Ps 32:11; 147:1; Php 4:4

2 Praise the Lord with the lyre;

make music to him with a ten-stringed harp.  * 33:2 Ps 92:3; 144:9

3 Sing a new song to him;  * 33:3 Ps 40:3; 96:1; Is 42:10

play skillfully on the strings, with a joyful shout.  * 33:3 Ps 150:4

4 For the word of the  Lord is right,

and all his work is trustworthy.  * 33:4 Ps 19:8

5 He loves righteousness and justice;  * 33:5 Ps 11:7; 37:28

the earth is full of the  Lord’s unfailing love.  * 33:5 Ps 119:64

6 The heavens were made by the word of the  Lord,  * 33:6 Heb 11:3; 2Pt 3:5

and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth.  * 33:6 Jb 26:13; Ps 104:30

7 He gathers the water of the sea into a heap;  * 33:7 LXX, Tg, Syr, Vg, Jer read sea as in a bottle

he puts the depths into storehouses.  * 33:7 Ex 15:8; Jos 3:13; Ps 78:13

8 Let the whole earth fear the  Lord;

let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.  * 33:8 Ps 67:7; 96:9

9 For he spoke, and it came into being;

he commanded, and it came into existence.  * 33:9 Gn 1:3; Ps 147:15,18; 148:5

10 The Lord frustrates the counsel of the nations;

he thwarts the plans of the peoples.  * 33:10 Ps 2:1–3; Is 8:10; 19:3

11 The counsel of the  Lord stands forever,

the plans of his heart from generation to generation.  * 33:11 Ps 139:17; Pr 19:21; Is 55:8

12 Happy is the nation whose God is the  Lord  —

the people he has chosen to be his own possession!  * 33:12 Ex 19:5; Dt 7:6; Ps 144:15

13 The Lord looks down from heaven;

he observes everyone.  * 33:13 Jb 28:24; Ps 11:4; 14:2; 53:2

14 He gazes on all the inhabitants of the earth

from his dwelling place.  * 33:14 Ps 102:19

15 He forms the hearts of them all;

he considers all their works.  * 33:15 Jb 34:21

16 A king is not saved by a large army;

a warrior will not be rescued by great strength.  * 33:16 Ps 44:6; 60:11

17 The horse is a false hope for safety;

it provides no escape by its great power.  * 33:17 Ps 20:7; 147:10; Hs 1:7

18 But look, the  Lord keeps his eye on those who fear him —

those who depend on his faithful love  * 33:18 Jb 36:7; Ps 34:15; 1Pt 3:12

19 to rescue them from death

and to keep them alive in famine.  * 33:19 Jb 5:20; Ps 37:19; 56:13

20 We wait for the  Lord;  * 33:20 Ps 130:6; Is 8:17

he is our help and shield.  * 33:20 Gn 15:1; Dt 33:29; Ps 3:3; 5:12; 18:2; 28:7; 115:9–11

21 For our hearts rejoice in him  * 33:21 Ps 13:5; 28:7; Jn 16:22

because we trust in his holy name.  * 33:21 Zph 3:12

22 May your faithful love rest on us,  Lord,

for we put our hope in you.  * 33:22 Ps 130:7; 147:11
