Psalms 69

A Plea for Rescue

For the choir director: according to "The Lilies." # 69:title Pss 45; 60; 80 titles Of David.

1 Save me, God,

for the water has risen to my neck 69:1 Jb 22:11; Ps 32:6; Jnh 2:5

2 I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing;

I have come into deep water,

and a flood sweeps over me 69:2 Ps 40:2; 124:4; Jnh 2:3

3 I am weary from my crying;

my throat is parched.

My eyes fail, looking for my God 69:3 Ps 6:6; 38:10; 119:82,123

4 Those who hate me without cause

are more numerous than the hairs of my head;

my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me,

are powerful 69:4 Ps 38:19

Though I did not steal, must repay 69:4 Lv 6:2–5; Ps 35:19; Jn 15:25

5 God, you know my foolishness,

and my guilty acts are not hidden from you 69:5 Ps 38:5; 44:21

6 Do not let those who put their hope in you

be disgraced because of me,

Lord God of Armies;

do not let those who seek you

be humiliated because of me,

God of Israel 69:6 Ps 25:2–3

7 For I have endured insults because of you,

and shame has covered my face 69:7 Ps 44:15; Is 50:6; Jr 51:51

8 I have become stranger to my brothers

and a foreigner to my mother’s sons  69:8 Jb 19:13–14; Ps 31:11; 38:11

9 because zeal for your house has consumed me 69:9 Jn 2:17

and the insults of those who insult you

have fallen on me 69:9 Ps 89:50; Rm 15:3

10 I mourned and fasted,

but it brought me insults 69:10 Ps 35:13; 109:24–25

11 I wore sackcloth as my clothing,

and I was joke to them.

12 Those who sit at the city gate talk about me,

and drunkards make up songs about me 69:11–12 Jb 17:6; 30:9; Ps 44:14; Jr 24:9

13 But as for me, Lord,

my prayer to you is for time of favor.

In your abundant, faithful loveGod,

answer me with your sure salvation 69:13 Ps 109:4; Is 49:8; 2Co 6:2

14 Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink.

Let me be rescued from those who hate me

and from the deep water 69:14 Ps 144:7

15 Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me

or the deep swallow me up;

don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me 69:15 Nm 16:33; Ps 55:23

16 Answer me, Lord,

for your faithful love is good.

In keeping with your abundant compassion,

turn to me 69:16 Ps 25:16; 109:21

17 Don’t hide your face from your servant,

for I am in distress.

Answer me quickly 69:17 Ps 27:9; 102:2

18 Come near to me and redeem me;

ransom me because of my enemies 69:18 Ps 119:134

19 You know the insults endure

my shame and disgrace.

You are aware of all my adversaries 69:19 Jr 15:15

20 Insults have broken my heart,

and am in despair.

I waited for sympathy,

but there was none;

for comforters, but found no one 69:20 Ps 142:4; Is 63:5

21 Instead, they gave me gall for my food,

and for my thirst

they gave me vinegar to drink 69:21 Mt 27:34,48; Jn 19:29

22 Let their table set before them be snare,

and let it be trap for their allies 69:22 Ps 35:4–8; Rm 11:9–10; 1Th 5:3

23 Let their eyes grow too dim to see,

and let their hips continually quake 69:23 Is 6:10; Ezk 29:7; Dn 5:6

24 Pour out your rage on them,

and let your burning anger overtake them 69:24 Ps 79:6; Ezk 21:31; Zph 3:8

25 Make their fortification desolate;

may no one live in their tents 69:25 Mt 23:38; Lk 13:35; Ac 1:20

26 For they persecute the one you struck

and talk about the pain of those you wounded 69:26 2Ch 28:9; Is 53:4; Zch 1:15

27 Charge them with crime on top of crime;

do not let them share in your righteousness 69:27 Neh 4:5; Ps 109:14

28 Let them be erased from the book of life

and not be recorded with the righteous 69:28 Ex 32:32; Dn 12:1; Rv 3:5

29 But as for me — poor and in pain

let your salvation protect meGod 69:29 Ps 20:1; 70:5

30 I will praise God’s name with song

and exalt him with thanksgiving 69:30 Ps 100:4; 107:22

31 That will please the Lord more than an ox,

more than a bull with horns and hooves 69:31 Ps 50:13–14; 51:16

32 The humble will see it and rejoice.

You who seek God, take heart 69:32 Ps 22:26; 34:2

33 For the Lord listens to the needy

and does not despise

his own who are prisoners 69:33 Ps 12:5; 68:6; 146:7

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,

the seas and everything that moves in them 69:34 Ps 96:11; Is 44:23; 49:13

35 for God will save Zion

and build up  69:35 Or and rebuild the cities of Judah.

They will live there and possess it 69:35 Ps 147:2; Is 44:26

36 The descendants of his servants will inherit it,

and those who love his name will live in it 69:36 Ps 102:28; Is 65:9
