1 Recebi esta mensagem acerca de Damasco:

"Vejam, a cidade de Damasco desaparecerá;

ela se tornará um monte de ruínas!

2 As cidades de Aroer ficarão desertas;

rebanhos pastarão nas ruas e ali se deitarão,

sem que ninguém os espante.

3 As cidades fortificadas de Israel*17.3 Em hebraico, Efraim, referência a Israel, o reino do norte. também serão destruídas,

e acabará o poder do reino de Damasco.

Tudo que restar da Síria

terá o mesmo destino da glória de Israel",

declara o Senhor dos Exércitos.

4 "Naquele dia, a glória de Israel*17.4 Em hebraico, de Jacó. Ver nota em 14.1. perderá seu brilho;

seu corpo robusto definhará.

5 A terra toda parecerá um campo de cereais

depois que os ceifeiros colheram as espigas.

Ficará desolada,

como os campos no vale de Refaim depois da colheita.

6 Restarão apenas uns poucos de seu povo,

como as azeitonas que sobram quando a árvore é sacudida.

Apenas duas ou três restam nos galhos mais altos,

quatro ou cinco aqui e ali em seus ramos",

declara o Senhor, o Deus de Israel.

7 Naquele dia, enfim, as pessoas olharão para seu Criador

e voltarão os olhos para o Santo de Israel.

8 Não buscarão mais a ajuda de seus ídolos,

nem adorarão aquilo que suas próprias mãos fizeram.

Já não se curvarão para seus postes de Aserá,

nem adorarão nos santuários idólatras que construíram.

9 Suas maiores cidades ficarão como um bosque desabitado,

como a terra que os heveus e os amorreus abandonaram*17.9 Conforme a Septuaginta; o hebraico traz como lugares do bosque e do ramo mais alto.

quando os israelitas vieram para cá tanto tempo atrás;

tudo ficará desolado.

10 Pois você se afastou do Deus que o salva,

se esqueceu da Rocha que o protege.

Por isso, pode até plantar as melhores videiras

e importar as mudas mais caras.

11 Pode ser que elas brotem no dia em que as puser na terra,

pode ser que floresçam na manhã em que as plantar,

mas você jamais colherá delas uma uva sequer;

sua colheita será apenas tristeza e dor contínua.

12 Ouça! As tropas de muitas nações rugem

como ruge o mar.

Escute o estrondo dos exércitos,

que avançam como ondas estrondosas.

13 Embora rujam como a rebentação na praia,

Deus os calará e eles fugirão,

como palha dispersada pelo vento,

como folhas num redemoinho antes da tempestade.

14 Ao cair da tarde, Israel espera, cheio de pavor,

mas, ao amanhecer, seus inimigos estão mortos.

Esse é o castigo merecido dos que nos saqueiam,

o fim apropriado para os que nos destroem.

1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. 2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. 3 The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts. 4 And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean. 5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel. 7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel. 8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.*17.8 images: or, sun images

9 In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation. 10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips: 11 In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.*17.11 a heap…: or, removed in the day of inheritance, and there shall be deadly sorrow

This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.
