1 Então o Senhor disse-me: Mesmo que Moisés e que Samuel se pusessem perante mim, rogando a favor deste povo, mesmo assim eu não ajudaria essa gente. Que se vão embora! Que se tirem da minha vista!v

2 E se te perguntarem - Mas para onde iríamos nós? Diz-lhes que o Senhor lhes responde assim: Os que estão destinados a morrer, para a morte; os que tiverem de morrer à espada, para a espada; os que estão condenados a morrer à fome, para a fome; os que deverão ficar cativos, para o cativeiro. Lançarei contra eles quatro espécies de destruidores, diz o Senhor - a espada para os matar, cães para os dilacerarem, aves de rapina e animais selvagens para devorarem e acabarem com o que restar dos outros. Por causa de toda a maldade que Manassés (filho de Ezequias), rei de Judá, praticou em Jerusalém, castigar-te-ei tão severamente que o teu destino fará arrepiar todos os povos da terra.

5 Quem virá a sentir tristeza por ti, Jerusalém? Quem chorará por ti? Quem se incomodará sequer para saber quem és tu? Tu me desprezaste e me viraste as costas. Por isso estenderei o meu punho fechado contra ti, para te destruir. Já estou cansado de estar sempre a dar-vos novas oportunidades. Peneirar-te-ei à porta das tuas cidades e tirar-te-ei tudo o que te é querido; destruirei o meu próprio povo, porque recusa voltar para mim e deixar os seus maus caminhos. Ver-se-ão viúvas sem conta; em pleno dia de sol, trarei a morte sobre a juventude, e o pesar às suas mães. Farei que caiam angústia e terror sobre eles, repentinamente. Uma mãe de sete filhos desfalecerá de aflição, porque todos os seus filhos terão sido mortos; pôs-se-lhe o seu sol enquanto era dia ainda; e ali fica ela agora desfilhada, porque a guerra lhe roubou todos os que sairam do seu seio!

10 Então Jeremias disse: Ai de mim, minha mãe! Mais valia que eu tivesse morrido ao nascer. Porque sou odiado para onde quer que vá. Não sou nenhum credor que lhes tivesse emprestado com usura e lhes estivesse a reclamar os juros ou o dinheiro; não lhes devo nada, tão pouco - pois mesmo assim me amaldiçoam.

11 Respondeu o Senhor: Libertar-te-ei seguramente para um bom fim. Farei que os teus inimigos venham interceder junto de ti, quando sofrerem calamidades e quando estiverem em angústias!

12 Poderá um homem quebrar barras de ferro, ferro do norte, ou de bronze? Pois da mesma forma também não pode ser quebrada a vontade rebelde deste povo

13 Assim entregarei todos os vossos bens, as vossas posses, como despojo ao inimigo; este vos levará como escravos, a vocês, para uma terra onde nunca estiveram anteriormente, porque a minha ira arde em fogo e te consumirei.

15 Então Jeremias replicou: Senhor, sabes que tem sido por tua causa que tenho sofrido. Tenho-lhes pregado a tua palavra e por isso sou perseguido. Não deixes que me matem! Livra-me das suas garras, e dá-lhes antes o que merecem!a

16 São as tuas palavras que me sustêm, que são o alimento da minha alma faminta. Trazem alegria ao meu coração amargurado, e comunicam-me satisfação. Como me sinto orgulhoso em me chamar pelo teu nome, ó Senhor.

17 Não me juntei às gentes nas suas reuniões e festins de galhofa e de brejeirices. Preferi ficar só, sob a mão de Deus. Rebento de indignação perante os seus pecados. Mas mesmo assim senti que me faltavas quando precisei de ti, Senhor! Permitiste que continuassem a perseguir-me. Será que eles não pensam deixar de me ferir? A tua ajuda parece-me tão incerta como um ribeiro correndo da montanha - por vezes cheio de águas torrenciais, noutras alturas sem gota de água.

19 E o Senhor retorquiu: Pára com essa fala insensata; só se voltares a confiar em mim poderás ser meu porta-voz. És tu quem tem que os influenciar a eles, e não eles a ti. Combaterão contra ti como se fossem um exército sitiante contra uma cidade de muros de bronze, mas não prevalecerão contra ti, porque eu estou contigo para te proteger e te livrar, diz o Senhor. Sim, podes ter a certeza de que te libertarei dessa gente malvada; salvar-te-ei das suas mãos violentas.

1 Then said Yahweh unto me, Though Moses and Samuel should stand before me, My soul could not be toward this people,Send them away from before me And let them go forth.

2 And it shall come to pass when they say unto thee Whither shall we go? Then shalt, thou say unto them, Thus saith YahwehSuch as are for death, to death, and Such as are for t he sword, to the sword, and Such as are for famine, to the famine, and Such as are for captivity, to captivity.

3 And I will set in charge over themfour species Declareth Yahweh, The sword to slay, and The dogs to trail along,and The bird of the heavens and The beast of the earth to devour and to destroy.

4 And I will make them a terror, to all the kingdoms of the earth,On account of Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah, For what he did in Jerusalem.

5 For who shall have pity upon thee O Jerusalem? And who shall lament for thee? And who shall turn aside, to ask for thy welfare?

6 Thou, hast abandoned, me, Declareth Yahweh, Backward, thou wilt go, Therefore have I stretched forth my hand against thee and laid thee waste,I am weary of having compassion.

7 Therefore have I winnowed them with a winnowing shovel in the gates of the land,I have bereavedI have destroyed my people, From their own ways, have they not returned.

8 Their widows have become multiplied to me, beyond the sand of the seas, I have brought against themupon the mother of young menthe spoiler in the broad noon,I have let fall upon her suddenly, excitement and terrors.

9 Languisheth! she who had given birth to seven, She hath breathed out her life Her sun hath gone in, while yet it was day, She hath turned pale and hath turned red,And the remnant of them, to the sword, will I deliver before their enemies, Declareth Yahweh.

10 Woe to me! my mother, That thou didst bear me, A man of litigation and a man of contention to all the land,I have not lent on interest Nor have they lent on interest to me, Every one, hath treated me with contempt.

11 Said Yahweh,Verily, I will loose thee, for good! Verily, I will intercede for thee In the time of calamity, and In the time of distress with the enemy!

12 Shall iron crush the iron from the North and the bronze?

13 Thy substance and thy treasuresfor a prey, will I give, without price,Even for all thy sins and in all thy bounds:

14 Therefore will I make thee pass, with thine enemies into a land thou knowest not,For, a fire, hath been kindled in mine anger Upon you, shall it burn.

15 Thou knowestO Yahweh Remember me and visit me and avenge me upon my persecutors, Do not of thy longsuffering, take me away,KnowI have borne for thy sake, reproach.

16 Thy words, were found, and I did eat them, Then became thy words unto me the joy and gladness of my heart,For thy Name hath been called upon me, O Yahweh God of hosts!

17 I sat not in the circle of mockers, Nor became I uproarious,Because of thy hand, by myself did I sit, For with indignation, hadst thou filled me.

18 Wherefore hath my pain become perpetual? And my wound, incurable? Refuseth to be healed? Wilt thou, indeed be, to me that disappointeth, Waters that cannot be trusted?

19 Wherefore Thus, saith YahwehIf thou wouldst return, I will cause thee to return Before me, shalt thou stand, Yea if thou wilt bring out the precious from among the vile, As mine own mouth shalt thou be,Let them return unto thee, But thou, shalt not return unto them;

20 So will I make thee to this people a wall of bronze, fortified, When they fight against thee, they shall not prevail against thee,For with thee, am, I, to save thee and to deliver thee, Declareth Yahweh;

21 Thus will I deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked,And redeem thee out of the grasp of the tyrants.
