1 Då tog Job till orda och sade:

2 O, att min sorg kunde vägas

och min olycka läggas

i samma vågskål!

3 Nu är den tyngre än havets sand,

därför kan jag inte styra mina ord,

har träffat mig,

min ande dricker deras gift.

Fasor från Gud

går i stridsställning mot mig.

5 Skriar vildåsnan över sitt gräs,

råmar oxen över sitt foder?

6 Kan det smaklösa ätas utan salt,

finns det någon smak i äggets vita?

7 Jag vägrar röra det,

det är kväljande mat för mig.

8 O, att min begäran blev hörd

och att Gud uppfyllde min längtan,

9 *4 Mos 11:15. att Gud ville krossa mig,

räcka ut sin hand

och skära av mitt liv!

10 Då vore det ändå min tröst,

mitt jubel i skoningslös plåga,

att jag inte förnekat

den Heliges ord.

11 Vad är då min kraft,

att jag skulle hoppas?

Vad är mitt slut,

att jag skulle vara tålig?

12 Är min kraft som stenens,

min kropp av koppar?

13 Nej, hjälpen kommer inte från mig,

varje utväg är stängd för mig.

14 Den förtvivlade borde få godhet

från sin vän,

men man fruktar inte mer

den Allsmäktige.

sätter sitt hopp till dem.

20 De blir svikna i sin förhoppning,

när de kommer fram

blir de bestörta.

21 Så har ni nu blivit till intet,

ni ser det förskräckliga

och blir rädda.

22 Har jag sagt: "Ge mig något,

köp mig loss med er förmögenhet,

23 rädda mig från fiendens hand,

friköp mig från utpressarna?"

24 Undervisa mig så tiger jag,

hjälp mig förstå var jag gått vilse.

Men vad hjälper

tillrättavisning från er?

26 Tänker ni märka ord

och betrakta en förtvivlad mans

ord som luft?

27 Skulle ni kasta lott om en faderlös

och köpslå om er vän?

28 Men se nu på mig!

Jag ska inte ljuga er rakt i ansiktet.

29 Vänd om, låt ingen orätt ske!

Vänd om, min sak är rättfärdig!

30 Bor orätt på min tunga?

Skulle inte min mun förstå ondska?
