Sirach 7

1 Não pratiques o mal, e o mal não te iludirá.

2 Afasta-te da injustiça, e a injustiça se afastará de ti.

3 Meu filho, não semeies o mal nos sulcos da injustiça, e dele não recolherás o sétuplo.

4 Não peças ao Senhor o encargo de guiar outrem nem ao rei um lugar de destaque.

5 Não te justifiques perante Deus, pois ele conhece o fundo dos corações; não pretendas parecer sábio diante do rei.

6 Não procures tornar-te juiz, se não fores bastante forte para destruir a iniquidade, para que não aconteça que temas perante um homem poderoso, e te exponhas a pecar contra a equidade.

7 Não ofendas a população inteira de uma cidade, não te lances em meio da multidão.

8 Não acrescentes um segundo pecado ao primeiro, pois mesmo por causa de um só não ficarás impune.

9 Não te deixes levar ao desânimo.

10 Não descuides de orar nem de dar esmola.

11 Não digas: "Deus há de considerar a quantidade de meus dons; quando os oferecer ao Deus Altíssimo, ele há de aceitá-los".

12 Não zombes de um homem que está na aflição, pois há alguém que humilha e exalta: Deus que tudo vê.

13 Não inventes mentira contra teu irmão, não inventes nenhuma mentira contra teu amigo.

14 Cuida-te para não dizeres mentira alguma, pois o costume de mentir é coisa má.

15 Na companhia dos anciãos, não sejas falador, não multipliques as palavras em tua oração.

16 Não abomines as tarefas penosas nem o labor da terra, que foi criado pelo Altíssimo.

17 Não te coloques no número das pessoas corrompidas,

18 lembra-te de que a cólera não tarda.

19 Humilha profundamente o teu espírito, pois o fogo e o verme são o castigo da carne do ímpio.

20 Não pratiques o mal contra um amigo que demora em te pagar, não desprezes por causa do ouro um irmão bem-amado.

21 Não te afastes da mulher sensata e virtuosa que te foi concedida no temor do Senhor; pois a graça de sua modéstia vale mais do que o ouro.

22 Não maltrates um escravo que trabalha pontualmente, nem o operário que te é devotado.

23 Que o escravo sensato te seja tão caro quanto a tua própria vida! Não o prives da liberdade nem o abandones na indigência.

24 Tens rebanhos? Cuida deles; se te forem úteis, guarda-os em tua casa.

25 Tens filhos? Educa-os, e curva-os à obediência desde a infância.

26 Tens filhas? Vela pela integridade de seus corpos, não lhes mostres um rosto por demais jovial.

27 Casa tua filha, e terás feito um grande negócio; dá-a a um homem sensato.

28 Se tiveres mulher conforme teu coração, não a repudies, e não confies na que é odiosa.

29 Honra teu pai de todo o coração, não esqueças os gemidos de tua mãe;

30 lembra-te de que sem eles não terias nascido, e faze por eles o que fizeram por ti.

31 Teme a Deus com toda a tua alma, tem um profundo respeito pelos seus sacerdotes.

32 Ama com todas as tuas forças aquele que te criou; não abandones os seus ministros.

33 Honra a Deus com toda a tua alma, respeita os sacerdotes; (nos sacrifícios) oferece-lhes as espáduas.

34 Dá-lhes, como te foi prescrito, a parte das primícias e das vítimas expiatórias; purifica-te de tuas omissões com pequenas (oferendas);

35 oferece ao Senhor os dons das espáduas, os sacrifícios de santificação e as primícias das coisas santas.

36 Estende a mão para o pobre, a fim de que sejam perfeitos teu sacrifício e tua oferenda.

37 Dá de boa vontade a todos os vivos, não recuses esse benefício a um morto.

38 Não deixes de consolar os que choram, aproxima-te dos que estão aflitos.

39 Não tenhas preguiça de visitar um doente, pois é assim que te firmarás na caridade.

40 Em tudo o que fizeres, lembra-te de teu fim, e jamais pecarás.

1 Do no evil,

so no evil will overtake you.

2 Depart from wrong,

and it will turn away from you.

3 My son, don’t sow upon the furrows of unrighteousness,

and you won’t reap them sevenfold.

4 Don’t seek preeminence from the Lord,

nor the seat of honor from the king.

5 Don’t justify yourself in the presence of the Lord,

and don’t display your wisdom before the king.

6 Don’t seek to be a judge,

lest you not be able to take away iniquities,

lest perhaps you fear the person of a mighty man,

and lay a stumbling block in the way of your uprightness.

7 Don’t sin against the multitude of the city.

Don’t disgrace yourself in the crowd.

8 Don’t commit a sin twice,

for even in one you will not be unpunished.

9 Don’t say, "He will look upon the multitude of my gifts.

When I make an offering to the Most High God, he will accept it."

10 Don’t be faint-hearted in your prayer.

Don’t neglect to give alms.

11 Don’t laugh a man to scorn when he is in the bitterness of his soul,

for there is one who humbles and exalts.

12 Don’t devise*7:12 Gr. Don’t plow a lie against your brother,

or do the same to a friend.

13 Refuse to utter a lie,

for that habit results in no good.

14 Don’t babble in the assembly of elders.

Don’t repeat your words in your prayer.

15 Don’t hate hard labor

or farm work, which the Most High has created.

16 Don’t number yourself among the multitude of sinners.

Remember that wrath will not wait.

17 Humble your soul greatly,

for the punishment of the ungodly man is fire and the worm.

18 Don’t exchange a friend for something,

neither a true brother for the gold of Ophir.

19 Don’t deprive yourself of a wise and good wife,

for her grace is worth more than gold.

20 Don’t abuse a servant who works faithfully,

or a hireling who gives you his life.

21 Let your soul love a wise servant.

Don’t defraud him of liberty.

22 Do you have cattle? Look after them.

If they are profitable to you, let them stay by you.

23 Do you have children? Correct them,

and make them obedient from their youth.

24 Do you have daughters? Take care of their bodies,

and don’t be overly indulgent toward them.

25 Give your daughter in marriage, and you will have accomplished a great matter.

Give her to a man of understanding.

26 Do you have a wife who pleases you? Don’t cast her out.

27 Honor your father with your whole heart,

and don’t forget the birth pangs of your mother.

28 Remember that you were born of them.

What will you repay them for the things that they have done for you?

29 Fear the Lord with all your soul;

and revere his priests.

30 With all your strength love him who made you.

Don’t forsake his ministers.

31 Fear the Lord and honor the priest.

Give him his portion, even as it is commanded you:

the first fruits, the trespass offering, the gift of the shoulders,

the sacrifice of sanctification, and the first fruits of holy things.

32 Also stretch out your hand to the poor man,

that your blessing may be complete.

33 A gift has grace in the sight of every living man.

Don’t withhold grace for a dead man.

34 Don’t avoid those who weep,

and mourn with those who mourn.

35 Don’t be slow to visit a sick man,

for by such things you will gain love.

36 In all your words, remember eternity,

and you will never sin.
