A King’s Prayer

Of David.

who trains my hands for battle

and my fingers for warfare.  * 144:1 Ps 18:34

2 He is my faithful love and my fortress,

my stronghold and my deliverer.

3 Lord, what is a human that you care for him,

a son of man  * 144:3 Or a mere mortal that you think of him?  * 144:3 Jb 7:17; Ps 8:4; Heb 2:6

4 A human is like a breath;

his days are like a passing shadow.  * 144:4 Ps 102:11; 109:23

5 Lord, part your heavens and come down.  * 144:5 2Sm 22:10; Ps 18:9–10

Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.  * 144:5 Ps 104:32

6 Flash your lightning and scatter the foe;  * 144:6 Lit scatter them

shoot your arrows and rout them.  * 144:6 Ps 18:14; Hab 3:11; Zch 9:14

7 Reach down  * 144:7 Lit down your hands from on high;  * 144:7 Ps 18:16

rescue me from deep water, and set me free

from the grasp of foreigners  * 144:7 Ps 69:14

8 whose mouths speak lies,

whose right hands are deceptive.  * 144:8 Ps 12:2; 41:6; 106:26

9 God, I will sing a new song to you;

I will play on a ten-stringed harp for you  * 144:9 Ps 33:2–3; 40:3  —

10 the one who gives victory to kings,

who frees his servant David

from the deadly sword.  * 144:10 Ps 18:50

11 Set me free and rescue me

from foreigners  * 144:11 Ps 69:14

whose mouths speak lies,

whose right hands are deceptive.  * 144:11 Ps 12:2; 41:6; 106:26

12 Then our sons will be like plants

nurtured in their youth,

our daughters, like corner pillars

that are carved in the palace style.  * 144:12 Ps 92:12–14; 128:3

13 Our storehouses will be full,

supplying all kinds of produce;  * 144:13 Ps 107:37–38

our flocks will increase by thousands

and tens of thousands in our open fields.  * 144:13 Pr 3:9–10

14 Our cattle will be well fed.  * 144:14 Or will bear heavy loads, or will be pregnant

There will be no breach in the walls,

no going into captivity,  * 144:14 Or be no plague, no miscarriage

and no cry of lament in our public squares.  * 144:14 Is 24:11; Jr 14:2

15 Happy are the people with such blessings.

Happy are the people whose God is the  Lord.  * 144:15 Ps 33:12
