1 Alors Eliphas Témanite prit la parole, et dit :

2 L'homme apportera-t-il quelque profit au [Dieu] Fort ? c'est plutôt à soi-même que l'homme sage apporte du profit.

3 Le Tout-puissant reçoit-il quelque plaisir, si tu es juste? ou quelque gain, si tu marches dans l'intégrité?

4 Te reprend-il, [et] entre-t-il avec toi en jugement pour la crainte qu'il ait de toi?

5 Ta méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande? et tes injustices ne sont-elles pas sans fin?

6 Car tu as pris sans raison le gage de tes frères; tu as ôté la robe à ceux qui étaient nus.

7 Tu n'as pas donné de l'eau à boire à celui qui était fatigué [du chemin]; tu as refusé ton pain à celui qui avait faim.

8 La terre était à l'homme puissant, et celui qui était respecté y habitait.

9 Tu as envoyé les veuves vides, et les bras des orphelins ont été cassés.

10 C'est pour cela que les filets sont tendus autour de toi, et qu'une frayeur subite t'épouvante.

11 Et les ténèbres [sont autour de toi], tellement que tu ne vois point; et le débordement des eaux te couvre.

12 Dieu n'habite-t-il pas au plus haut des cieux? Regarde donc la hauteur des étoiles; [et] combien elles sont élevées.

13 Mais tu as dit : Qu'est-ce que le [Dieu] Fort connaît? Jugera-t-il au travers des nuées obscures?

14 Les nuées nous cachent à ses yeux, et il ne voit rien, il se promène sur le tour des cieux.

15 [Mais] n'as-tu pas pris garde au vieux chemin dans lequel les hommes injustes ont marché?

16 [Et n'as-tu pas pris garde] qu'ils ont été retranchés avant le temps; et que ce sur quoi ils se fondaient s'est écoulé comme un fleuve.

17 Ils disaient au [Dieu] Fort : Retire-toi de nous. Mais qu'est-ce que leur faisait le Tout-puissant?

18 Il avait rempli leur maison de biens. Que le conseil des méchants soit [donc] loin de moi!

19 Les justes le verront, et s'en réjouiront, et l'innocent se moquera d'eux.

20 Certainement notre état n'a point été aboli, mais le feu a dévoré leur excellence.

21 Attache-toi à lui, je te prie, et demeure en repos, par ce moyen il t'arrivera du bien.

22 Reçois, je te prie, la loi de sa bouche, et mets ses paroles en ton cœur.

23 Si tu retournes au Tout-puissant, tu seras rétabli. Chasse l'iniquité loin de ta tente.

24 Et tu mettras l'or sur la poussière, et l'or d'Ophir sur les rochers des torrents.

25 Et le Tout-puissant sera ton or, et l'argent de tes forces.

26 Car alors tu trouveras tes délices dans le Tout-puissant, et tu élèveras ton visage vers Dieu.

27 Tu le fléchiras par tes prières, et il t'exaucera, et tu lui rendras tes vœux.

28 Si tu as quelque dessein, il te réussira, et la lumière resplendira sur tes voies.

29 Quand on aura abaissé quelqu'un, et que tu auras dit : Qu'il soit élevé; alors [Dieu] délivrera celui qui tenait les yeux baissés.

30 Il délivrera celui qui n'est pas innocent, et il sera délivré par la pureté de tes mains.

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous? or is it gain to him, that you make your ways blameless?

4 Will he reprove you for fear of you? will he enter with you into judgment?

5 Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities without end?

6 For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.

8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it.

9 You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you;

11 Or darkness, that you can not see; and abundance of waters cover you.

12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 And you say, How does God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he sees not; and he walks in the circle of heaven.

15 Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

16 Who were cut down before their time, whose foundation was swept away with a flood:

17 Who said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do to us?

18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

20 Surely our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.

21 Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto you.

22 Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

23 If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, you shall put away iniquity far from your tents.

24 Then shall you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25 Yea, the Almighty shall be your defense, and you shall have plenty of silver.

26 For then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face unto God.

27 You shall make your prayer unto him, and he shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows.

28 You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established for you: and the light shall shine upon your ways.

29 When men are cast down, then you shall say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

30 He shall deliver the innocent man: and he is delivered by the pureness of your hands.
