1 Uma pessoa honesta, ainda que pobre, é sempre alguém a quem se dá valor. Um caluniador, e ainda por cima de inteligência limitada, ninguém o considera.2 Uma intenção expressa irreflectidamente não é bom, e quem é precipitado nos seus actos peca.3 Uma pessoa pode dar cabo da sua vida por causa da sua má cabeça, e no fim acaba por culpar Deus pelo que lhe acontece!4 As riquezas arranjam sempre muitos amigos, e quando alguém empobrece, até o seu melhor amigo é capaz de o deixar!5 Não será impunemente que alguém serve de falsa testemunha, e quem diz mentiras não escapará.6 Muita gente procura lisonjear os poderosos. E quanta gente não se torna logo amiga de quem lhe sabe dar presentes!7 Se até os irmãos do pobre o aborrecem e se afastam dele envergonhados, quanto mais os que se dizem apenas seus amigos! Por muito que explique e que fale, não lhe ligam.8 Quem obtém entendimento é porque procura cuidar com inteligência do seu próprio ser, e quem mantém a sua razão esclarecida prosperará.9 Uma falsa testemunha não ficará sem castigo, e o mentiroso virá a ser apanhado!10 Não parece certo a ninguém que um tolo venha a ser bem sucedido na vida. Também é coisa errada que um servo se ponha a dar ordens a quem foi investido de autoridade.11 Um indivíduo sensato procura controlar a sua irritação e não valorizar as ofensas. Isto afinal só vem contribuir para o seu prestígio.12 A ira daquele que governa um povo é tão perigosa como a do leão. Mas a sua simpatia refresca e renova, como o orvalho que cai sobre a natureza.13 Um filho insensato é uma grande calamidade para os pais. Uma mulher sempre a ralhar faz o mesmo efeito que gotas caindo continuamente sobre a cabeça de alguém!14 Uma casa e riquezas são coisas que se pode receber como uma simples herança. Mas uma esposa sensata é verdadeiramente um dom de Deus!15 A preguiça faz mergulhar num profundo torpor, e o estômago do negligente acaba por sofrer de fome!16 Quem guarda os mandamentos de Deus guarda-se a si próprio; ignorá-los pela indiferença significa a morte.17 Quem dá aos pobres empresta a Deus, o qual virá a pagar com juros largamente vantajosos.18 Corrige o teu filho enquanto é novo, enquanto ainda há esperança. Se não o fizeres arruinarás a sua vida.19 Uma pessoa que perde a calma e que se irrita violentamente terá de vir a sofrer as consequências da sua atitude. Se os outros vierem a desculpá-lo, estão a incitá-lo a recomeçar os seus excessos.20 Ouve os conselhos que te derem e aceita as correcções, para que sejas sábio todo o resto da tua vida.21 Muitos são os projectos que se formam no espírito dos homens, mas só os planos de Deus perduram.22 Uma pessoa bondosa torna-se, naturalmente, simpática. Vale mais ser-se pobre do que desonesto.23 O temor de Deus produz uma verdadeira vida, dá felicidade e protege do mal!24 Há gente tão preguiçosa que até lhe custa levar a mão à boca para comer.25 Se castigares o escarnecedor, outros haverá como ele que ao ver isso procurarão corrigir-se. As pessoas sensatas são capazes de, através das críticas que lhes possam fazer, ficar mais sabedoras ainda.26 Um filho que maltrata ou que aflige os seus pais torna-se uma vergonha social.27 Quando te estiverem a ensinar coisas, nunca deixes que te desviem daquele conhecimento que já verificaste ser correcto.28 A falsa testemunha não quer saber da justiça para nada. A boca da gente má ingere iniquidade.29 Há castigo já preparado para os que desprezam a sabedoria, ou que lhe ficam indiferentes.

1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.4 Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor.5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.6 Many will entreat the favor of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.10 Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.12 The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew upon the grass.13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.14 House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.17 He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth to the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.19 A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.22 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.24 A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.25 Smite a scorner and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.28 An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
