1 Quando fores convidado para comer com alguém de alta posição social toma cuidado com a forma como te serves. Se és glutão põe um freio à tua garganta, por muito apetitosa que seja a comida. Pois pode ser que ele queira subornar-te com a comida, e nada de bom virá desse convite.4 Não te esgotes com a ambição de enriqueceres. Dá de mão de todos esses teus cálculos. Irás tu fixar o olhar naquilo que não é nada? As riquezas têm asas e desaparecerão no ar como pássaros!6 Não fiques a dever favores a gente má; não cobices as suas concessões. A sua falsa bondade é um truque que usam contra ti. Eles poderão dizer-te: Come e bebe à vontade! Mas na realidade não são teus amigos, é só para te apanhar. O que receberes deles virá a azedar-te no estômago e vomitarás tudo. E terás que engolir depois as doces palavras de agradecimento que lhes disseste.9 Não desperdices as tuas palavras com o teimoso. Quanto melhor for o teu conselho tanto mais ele o desprezará.10 Não desloques, em teu favor, os limites das terras estabelecidos pelos teus antepassados, nem ocupes o terreno dos órfãos indefesos. Porque o seu defendor é poderoso; ele próprio defenderá a causa deles contra ti.12 Deixa o teu coração aplicar-se à educação e à disciplina. Não recuses as críticas; elas são-te necessárias.13 Não deixes de corrigir os teus filhos. Porque a disciplina e a correcção nunca mataram ninguém. Talvez te custe castigá-los, mas estarás a contribuir para livrar as suas almas do inferno.15 Meu filho, como eu ficarei feliz se te tornares uma pessoa de bom senso. É verdade, terei grande alegria ao ouvir-te falar coisas rectas e bem pensadas.17 Não tenhas inveja da vida que levam os pecadores. Pelo contrário, vive no temor de Deus. Porque terás certamente um futuro feliz; a tua esperança não será iludida.19 Meu filho, ouve-me e sê inteligente. Dirige a tua vida nos caminhos de Deus.20 Não andes no meio de beberrões e de comilões, amantes só de bons acepipes; porque virão a cair na miséria. Essas coisas dão moleza e sonolência, as quais levam essas pessoas, por fim, a vestir-se de farrapos.22 Ouve o teu pai e a tua mãe, que te geraram; não desprezes os seus conselhos, fruto da experiência que os anos já lhes deram.23 Faz tudo por obteres a verdade, custe o que custar; faz o mesmo para a sabedoria, para a educação, para a inteligência.24 O pai de um justo terá motivos de grande alegria. Que felicidade o ter-se um filho cheio de bom senso. Por isso não deixes de dar essa alegria aos teus pais, de proporcionar esse prazer a quem te pôs neste mundo!26 Meu filho, dá-me o teu coração; e que os teus olhos se fixem no meu exemplo.27 Afasta-te das mulheres de má conduta, porque são como uma armadilha no teu caminho, que te atirará para uma fossa suja em que acabarás por arruinares-te. Uma mulher de má vida é como um salteador que espreita a passagem das suas vítimas. Elas só servem para multiplicar a maldade entre os pecadores.29 Para quem são os ais? Para quem são as angústias e tristezas? Quem é que anda sempre metido em discussões e brigas? Quem são os que andam sempre de olhos vermelhos, inflamados, e cheios de mazelas interiores? São os que perdem o seu tempo na bebida, provando misturas e enchendo se de álcool.31 Não te deixes dominar pelo brilho e pelo sabor suave do vinho. O mal que ele faz, quando te vencer, é como o da mordedura duma serpente venenosa ou uma víbora. Terás alucinações; chegarás a dizer loucuras e a falar com violência. Perderás o controlo de ti mesmo de tal maneira que serás como alguém que estivesse a dormir em cima de ondas, ou atado ao cimo dum mastro. E depois disso tudo ainda dirás: Foi como se me tivessem dado uma sova, mas não me doeu nada. O melhor é não acordar de vez. Vamos lá beber mais uns copos!

1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou art a man given to appetite.3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful food.4 Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.5 Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:11 For their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause with thee.12 Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.16 Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.18 For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.20 Be not among wine-bibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.22 Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.27 For a lewd woman is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.34 And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.35 They have stricken me, wilt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
