1 Feliz é o homem cujo filho tem discernimento; mas a mãe dum desobediente é uma mulher bem triste.2 Os ganhos obtidos irregularmente não podem dar felicidade segura; mas o viver com justiça livra da morte.3 O Senhor não deixa ter fome a alma daquele que o serve, mas rejeitará os apetites do que recusa Deus.4 O que trabalha com engano virá a empobrecer; os que trabalham com aplicação enriquecerão.5 Um moço inteligente saberá juntar durante o Verão; mas que vergonha ver gente nova dormindo quando deveria estar a trabalhar!6 O que anda na justiça cobre-se de bênçãos, mas os ímpios têm a boca cheia de violência.7 Toda a gente se lembra com gosto dos que foram rectos, mas o nome dos que são rebeldes a Deus fica a cheirar mal, depois deles.8 Uma pessoa inteligente fica contente quando lhe dão instrução, mas o que só tem conversas insensatas tornar-se-á um inútil.9 Quem anda com integridade, anda seguro na vida, mas aquele que segue caminhos tortuosos virá a ser descoberto.10 O fechar os olhos ao pecado só traz é tristeza, e o que anda sempre a dizer coisas sem inteligência não ficará sem castigo.11 Há como que uma fonte de vida no que diz um homem recto, mas a boca dos maus está só cheia de violência.12 O ódio reaviva velhas contendas, mas o amor passa por cima das ofensas.13 As pessoas com bom senso são pretendidas como conselheiras, mas aqueles que o não têm virão a sofrer castigos, como se fossem delinquentes.14 As pessoas com entendimento sabem moderar a língua, mas os loucos deitam pela boca fora o que só lhes causa tristeza e incómodos.15 A riqueza do rico é a fortaleza dentro da qual se protege, enquanto que a pobreza dos pobres é a sua ruína.16 Os ganhos do que anda com rectidão contribuem para a causa da justiça, mas o indivíduo ruim desbarata os seus no pecado.17 Aquele que recebe de boa vontade a correcção está no caminho da vida, mas o que a recusa anda errado.18 O que encobre o ódio é um hipócrita; o que difama o seu semelhante é um louco.19 No muito falar há sempre grande risco de pecar, mas quem sabe refrear a sua língua é sensato.20 Aquilo que diz uma pessoa recta é precioso como a prata, mas os pensamentos dos que se afastam de Deus não valem nada!21 Os rectos podem dar conselhos a muita gente, mas os tolos arruinam-se porque não têm bom senso.22 A bênção do Senhor é que enriquece; o nosso esforço nada lhe altera .23 Para o louco, o praticar o mal é uma brincadeira, enquanto que o homem com entendimento tem alegria na sabedoria.24 Os temores de uma pessoa má vêm a realizar-se; em contrapartida as esperanças do recto é Deus quem lhes dá cumprimento.25 Quando as catástrofes rebentam, o revoltado contra Deus é levado; mas o que anda com justiça está bem fundamentado.26 Um preguiçoso, para quem o emprega, é como o fumo para os olhos, como o ácido para os dentes.27 A reverência pelo Senhor aumenta o tempo da vida; os que fogem de Deus não podem contar com uma vida duradoira.28 A esperança do homem bom é felicidade eterna, mas as esperanças dos maus são em vão.29 O Senhor protege os que andam no seu caminho; mas os que praticam a iniquidade serão destruídos.30 O indivíduo recto nunca será abalado, mas os maus não ficarão na terra.31 A boca do que anda com justiça quando se abre é para revelar sabedoria em abundância, mas a língua do que só sabe dizer maldades será cortada.32 O que vive na justiça sabe falar aquilo que pode ajudar os outros, mas a boca da gente perversa está sempre cheia de coisas ruins.

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall perish.8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.9 He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.16 The labor of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.17 He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that restraineth his lips is wise.20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.25 As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.28 The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.29 The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.30 The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
