1 Meu filho, presta atenção à sabedoria que aqui te apresento: ouve as minhas explicações, para seres prudente e para que a tua linguagem guarde o conhecimento.3 Os lábios de uma mulher de má vida podem parecer que escorrem mel. As suas falsas lisonjas são untuosas e macias. Mas no fim de contas, deixam um sabor amargo, uma ferida feita como que por uma aguda espada de dois gumes. Os seus comportamentos conduzem à morte. A sua conduta é inspirada pelo inferno. Não conhece o caminho da vida. Cambaleia por um caminho tortuoso, e nem se importa de saber onde é que ele leva.7 Portanto, agora, meus filhos, dêem-me ouvidos, e nunca se desviem das palavras que vos estou a dizer:8 Afastem-se dessas mulheres. Não se aproximem sequer da porta onde elas moram, para que não percam a dignidade, fazendo depender a vossa vida de gente cruel; para que gente que vos é estranha não venha a tirar-vos força e se tornem escravos deles. A consequência disso não poderá deixar de ser o gemerem em angústias, enquanto o vosso corpo vai apodrecendo pelo vício. No fim, só terão isto a dizer:12 Oh, se ao menos eu tivesse prestado atenção aos avisos que me deram! Se não tivesse desprezado as repreensões! Porque é que não quis ouvir os que queriam ensinar-me? Porque é que fui assim tão estúpido?14 Pouco faltou para que a minha desgraça fosse completa. E agora até o desprezo público tenho de enfrentar.15 Por isso, bebe a água da tua própria cisterna. Porque é que o teu amor havia de derramar-se por mulheres da rua? Que os filhos que tens sejam só para ti e não partilhados com outros!18 Que a tua fonte seja bendita; sê feliz com a mulher que escolheste na tua juventude.19 Bela, aos teus olhos, como linda gazela, como uma corça graciosa, que te satisfaças, todo o tempo no seu seio - que só o seu amor te deleite! Porque é que, meu filho, te deixarias atrair por outras mulheres, que não a tua? Porque abraçarias tu uma mulher que te é estranha?21 Deus observa atentamente a tua conduta, examina cuidadosamente tudo o que fazes.22 Quem faz o mal ficará cativo da sua própria maldade; será acorrentado pelo seu pecado. Morrerá porque preferiu viver sem correcção. Todos os seus erros se explicam pela sua loucura.

1 My son, attend to my wisdom, and bow thy ear to my understanding:2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honey-comb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.6 Lest thou shouldst ponder the path of life, her ways are movable, that thou canst not know them.7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:9 Lest thou give thy honor to others, and thy years to the cruel:10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labors be in the house of a stranger;11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.15 Drink waters out of thy own cistern, and running waters out of thy own well.16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.17 Let them be only thy own, and not for strangers with thee.18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be held with the cords of his sins.23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
