1 Os filhos sensatos aceitam os avisos dos pais. Os que se têm a si mesmos em grande conta desprezam-nos.2 As pessoas honestas ganham as suas causas com uma argumentação cuidada e séria. Pelo contrário os transgressores só sabem defender-se por meio da violência.3 O que sabe controlar o seu espírito sabe também com certeza dominar a língua. Mas quem abre precipitadamente a boca leva tudo à ruína.4 O preguiçoso quer ter muita coisa, mas é muito pouco o que consegue obter; enquanto que os que trabalham com aplicação prosperam.5 Os justos aborrecem a mentira; os pecadores mentem constantemente e espalham infâmias por toda a parte.6 A própria justiça protege aquele cuja conduta é íntegra; a maldade dos pecadores destrui-los-á.7 Há quem se faça passar por rico e nada tem. Outros há que passam por pobres e têm grandes riquezas!8 Os raptos e os pedidos de milhões para resgate nunca foi coisa que preocupasse os pobres.9 A vida dos justos está cheia de luz. O caminho dos pecadores é escuro; e até a luzinha que o ilumina virá a apagar-se.10 O orgulho leva sempre a discussões, mas os que admitem os conselhos são verdadeiros sábios.11 A riqueza obtida à pressa por especulação virá a desaparecer, mas aquela que se obtém pelo trabalho virá a aumentar.12 Uma esperança muito demorada faz o coração doente; mas quando os sonhos se realizam trazem vida e alegria.13 O que despreza a palavra de Deus virá a perder-se, mas o que respeita os seus mandamentos será bem sucedido.14 O ensino dos sábios é uma fonte de vida, capaz de desviar das armadilhas da morte.15 O bom senso é coisa sempre apreciada. O caminho da gente corrupta é duro de trilhar.16 Um indivíduo prudente age com conhecimento de causa; o insensato até faz gala da sua cretinice.17 Um mensageiro que não é de confiança pode provocar muito transtorno. O embaixador digno de crédito saneia as situações.18 Quando se rejeita a repreensão, virá a cair-se na pobreza e na desgraça. Contudo se se sabe aceitar a crítica sã, está-se no caminho da honra.19 Um sonho que se realiza é coisa que faz bem à alma. Os loucos recusam abandonar os seus desejos quando são condenáveis.20 Se fores companheiro de pessoas sensatas, ganharás entendimento; mas, se andares com gente tola, ver-te-ás em apuros.21 O mal persegue os pecadores, enquanto que bênçãos seguem os passos dos justos.22 Uma pessoa de entendimento procura deixar uma herança para os seus filhos e netos. Os pecadores, quando morrem, aquilo que têm é como um depósito a favor dos justos.23 A terra que o pobre cultiva pode ser muito rica, mas frequentemente são as injustiças que o tornam pobre.24 Se recusares disciplinar o teu filho, dás provas de que não o amas devidamente. Porque se o amasses saberias castigá-lo sempre que é preciso.25 O justo come e fica satisfeito; no entanto os maus andam sempre com fome.

1 A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is lothsome, and cometh to shame.6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.8 The ransom of a man's life is his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.9 The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be extinguished.10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well-advised is wisdom.11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labor shall increase.12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.13 Whoever despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.14 The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.15 Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard.16 Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.17 A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful embassador is health.18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honored.19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.21 Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repaid.22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.25 The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
