1 O individualista, que faz tudo sempre sozinho, é um egoísta, que recusa toda a espécie de conselhos.2 Os loucos não querem saber de como são as coisas na realidade. O que lhes interessa é só gritar aos quatro ventos o que pensam.3 Aparecem os malfeitores, e logo com eles vem a infâmia, o desprezo, o insulto.4 As palavras de um homem sábio exprimem profundas torrentes de pensamento.5 Quem favorece os malfeitores a fim de poder condenar o inocente, está agindo com profunda injustiça.6 Os doidos, são eles próprios a provocar as contendas; as coisas que eles dizem acarretam-lhes dissabores, e armam-lhes ciladas.8 As conversas sobre a vida alheia são, para o linguareiro, como saborosos petiscos que deliciam o íntimo do seu ser.9 O preguiçoso que faz um trabalho com negligência é como se estivesse destruindo uma obra de valor.10 O nome do Senhor é como uma poderosa fortaleza; os fiéis acorrem e acham aí perfeita segurança.11 O rico considera a sua riqueza como uma cidade inatacável, como uma muralha perfeitamente segura.12 O orgulho acaba sempre na ruína; mas também a honra vem sempre precedida da humildade.13 Responder antes de ouvir é loucura! É mesmo uma vergonha para quem o faz!14 A moral duma pessoa pode ajudá-la na doença. Mas para um espírito abatido, que esperança haverá?15 Uma pessoa esclarecida está sempre pronta a adquirir novos conhecimentos, e tem o ouvido atento a tudo o que possa enriquecer o seu espírito.16 Os presentes são coisas que por vezes até fazem milagres, e conseguem dar acesso a pessoas consideradas muito importantes!17 Quando há um debate, o primeiro a falar parece ter toda a razão. Mas depois aparecem os outros a contestá-lo, e a rebater os seus argumentos.18 Tirar à sorte é capaz de decidir o fim de uma discussão, e a posição de gente poderosa.19 Um irmão ofendido torna-se mais impenetrável do que uma fortificação militar. As querelas fecham-no como se fossem ferrolhos dum velho castelo.20 Para uma pessoa que sabe dar bons conselhos, isso dá-lhe satisfação como se comesse um bom prato quando está com fome.21 Frequentemente a morte e a vida dependem da força da linguagem. Por isso quem usa dela terá de pensar bem no alcance e nas consequências do que diz.22 Um homem que encontra uma esposa acha uma boa coisa. Ela é uma bênção da parte do Senhor.23 O pobre fala suplicando, mas quantas vezes o rico lhe responde duramente!24 Quem tem muitos amigos pode dar-se por muito satisfeito. Mas há um amigo que é mais chegado do que um irmão!
1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may reveal itself.3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.4 The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the well-spring of wisdom as a flowing brook.5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.6 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.8 The words of a tale-bearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit.12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame to him.14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbor cometh and searcheth him.18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.20 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit of it.22 Whoever findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor from the LORD.23 The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.24 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
