1 Quem é mau foge mesmo sem que ninguém o persiga. Mas as pessoas justas estão confiantes, tal como os filhotes do leão.2 Numa nação em que a maldade se multiplica, muitos aparecem para dirigi-la. Mas só com chefes honestos e experimentados haverá estabilidade.3 Um homem pobre que oprime os que são mais pobres é como uma enxurrada; não fica migalha de pão para ninguém.4 Desprezar as leis é como que favorecer a maldade. Obedecer-lhes é levantar uma barreira ao mal.5 Os maus não entendem nada da verdadeira justiça. Mas os que buscam o Senhor compreendem todas as coisas.6 Vale muito mais ser pobre mas honesto do que rico e ter uma conduta condenável.7 Um jovem com entendimento guarda os princípios que regem uma vida recta. Mas os que andam na companhia de gente corrompida tornam-se uma vergonha para os seus pais.8 Os lucros conseguidos pela exploração dos outros, através da avareza e usura, acabarão por vir parar às mãos dos que defenderam os que foram explorados.9 Aquele que faz ouvidos surdos à lei de Deus, até as suas orações são detestáveis.10 Aquele que faz com que os rectos se desviem para um mau caminho será condenado por aquilo mesmo em que fez pecar os outros. As pessoas honestas nunca deixarão de ser recompensadas.11 Os ricaços são gente que em geral se considera muito esperta aos seus próprios olhos; mas as pessoas humildes, que conhecem bem a vida, sabem desmascará-los.12 Quando os justos triunfam há grande alegria. Mas quando é gente corrupta que sobe na vida, cada um procura esconder-se para se abrigar.13 Quem esconde os seus pecados nunca prosperará; mas quem os confessa e os abandona será perdoado.14 Feliz é aquele que teme o Senhor. Os obstinados nunca serão felizes.15 Um ditador corrupto que domina sobre um povo miserável é algo como um leão rugindo enfurecido, ou como um urso feroz, atacando esfaimado e enraivecido. Só um chefe de estado louco é que oprime o seu povo; mas se rejeitar a rapina e a corrupção no seu governo, verá prolongar-se o seu tempo de chefia.17 A consciência manchada dum assassino acompanhá-lo-á até ao inferno; ninguém o livrará dela.18 Os que se conduzem com toda a honestidade estarão sempre seguros. Mas os fraudulentos serão castigados infalivelmente.19 O trabalho diligente traz prosperidade. Mas o ocioso fartar-se-á de miséria.20 As pessoas leais serão cumuladas de bênçãos, mas aqueles que querem enriquecer-se rapidamente, também rapidamente cairão no fracasso.21 A parcialidade é coisa condenável; e até pelo pão para a boca as pessoas são capazes de cometer injustiças.22 Correr atrás de riquezas fáceis é errado e não pode deixar de levar à miséria.23 As pessoas sempre apreciam mais quem saiba repreendê-las com franqueza e justiça, do que quem as lisonjeia sem fundamento.24 Quem defrauda os seus pais, e ainda por cima diz Não tem importância!, identifica-se com um criminoso.25 O ambicioso é um constante provocador de contendas. Só o confiar no Senhor pode dar prosperidade.26 Quem confia em si mesmo é um tolo. Mas quem sabe conduzir-se de acordo com a sabedoria, esse andará seguro!27 Quem reparte com os pobres não sofrerá necessidades. Mas os que fingem ignorar os que vivem na miséria cobrir-se-ão de maldições!28 Quando gente corrupta consegue subir na vida, as populações fogem a esconder-se; mas quando eles são castigados e desaparecem, então multiplicam-se os rectos.

1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.2 For the transgression of a land many are its princes: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.3 A poor man that oppresseth the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.4 They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.5 Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.6 Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he is rich.7 He who keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.8 He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.10 Whoever causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.11 The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor man that hath understanding searcheth him out.12 When righteous men rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but he who confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.14 Happy is the man that feareth always: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.16 The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.17 A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him.18 He who walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.21 To have respect of persons is not good: for, for a piece of bread that man will transgress.22 He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.23 He that rebuketh a man afterward shall find more favor than he that flattereth with the tongue.24 He that robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.25 He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoever walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.27 He that giveth to the poor shall not want: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.
