1 Seguem-se aqui as palavras que Agur, filho de Jaque, dirigiu a Itiel e a Ucal:2 Sim, eu sou o mais bruto dos seres humanos. Falta-me suficiente inteligência para poder considerar-me um homem. Não tenho cultura nem o conhecimento de Deus.4 Quem é que jamais tendo subido ao céu pode descer de novo de lá? Quem é que alguma vez conseguiu reter os ventos na sua mão ou guardar as chuvas sob as suas vestes? Quem estabeleceu os limites da Terra? Qual é o seu nome, ou o do seu filho? Sabê-lo-ás?5 Cada palavra de Deus é verdadeira. Ele é uma protecção real para os que nele confiam.6 Por isso nada acrescentes à sua palavra, para que não venhas a ser repreendido e acusado de falsidade.7 Duas coisas te pedi, ó Deus, antes de morrer:8 Primeiro, que me afastes da falsidade e da mentira. Depois, que não me dês nem pobreza nem riqueza. Dá-me o bastante para as minhas necessidades. Porque se ficar rico, corro o risco de me esquecer de ti e começar a perguntar: Mas afinal quem é Deus? Por outro lado se vier a empobrecer, a miséria pode levar-me ao roubo e a desonrar o nome de Deus.10 Não acuses falsamente um indivíduo perante aquele que o emprega, para que não te rogue pragas por causa dessa tua má acção.11 Há gente capaz até de amaldiçoar o pai e a mãe! Outros há ainda que se consideram sem falhas, mas que nunca chegaram a lavar-se da sua imundície! É gente arrogante, altiva, que olha os outros sempre de sobrancelhas levantadas. Atropelam os aflitos e devoram os pobres com dentes afiados como cutelos!15 Há três coisas, ou mesmo quatro, que nunca se fartam, que nunca dizem: Basta; como a sanguessuga que sempre clama: Dá-me! Dá-me! São elas: o inferno, a madre estéril, uma terra seca e o fogo.17 Quem zomba do seu pai, mesmo que seja só com o olhar, ou quem despreza a obediência devida à sua mãe, acabará a vida com os olhos arrancados pelos corvos e devorado pelos abutres.18 Estas três coisas parecem-me maravilhosas; e há até uma quarta que eu não compreendo: O caminho da águia no céu, o caminho duma serpente deslizando nas rochas, o caminho dum navio no alto mar e o desenvolvimento do amor entre um homem e uma moça.20 E há ainda outra coisa também: a conduta duma mulher adúltera que depois de pecar procura recompor-se dizendo: Mas que mal é que eu fiz?21 Três coisas existem, e mesmo quatro, que são capazes de transtornar toda uma nação, e que se tornam insuportáveis para toda a gente: Um miserável que se torna governante, um doido que consegue enriquecer, uma mulher desprezada quando casa, uma empregada doméstica que toma o lugar da sua senhora.24 Há quatro pequenas coisas, mas que possuem um entendimento maravilhoso:25 As formigas - que são uns animaizinhos sem defesa mas que sabem guardar no Verão a comida para o Inverno;26 Os coelhos - animais também não muito fortes, mas que têm inteligência suficiente para construírem as suas habitações nas rochas;27 Os gafanhotos - que apesar de não terem entre si um chefe, contudo sabem voar organizados, em enxames;28 Os lagartos - que se podem apanhar com as mãos, mas que conseguem entrar até nos palácios dos grandes senhores.29 Existem três, e até mesmo quatro criaturas que têm um porte e uma conduta admiráveis:O leão, o rei dos animais, que ninguém faz recuar;O pavão, exibindo a sua beleza;O bode;O chefe duma nação a quem ninguém deve resistir.32 Se caíste na loucura de te elevares a ti próprio, ou se começaste a tramar o mal, é melhor calares-te.33 Como o bater as natas produz manteiga, e o esmurrar do nariz provoca sangue, assim também a explosão da cólera gera disputas.

1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke to Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal,2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.4 Who hath ascended into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield to them that put their trust in him.6 Add thou not to his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.7 Two things have I required of thee; deny them not to me before I die:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.10 Accuse not a servant to his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw-teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.15 The horse-leech hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, It is enough:16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.17 The eye that mocketh at its father, and despiseth to obey its mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I know not:19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with food.23 For an odious woman when she is married; and a handmaid that is heir to her mistress.24 There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are very wise:25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;26 The conies are but a feeble people, yet they make their houses in the rocks;27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in king's palaces.29 There are three things which go well, yes, four are comely in going:30 A lion, which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;31 A greyhound; a he-goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thy hand upon thy mouth.33 Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
