1 Não tenhas inveja de tudo o que os pecadores fazem, nem procures a sua convivência. Pois passam o tempo tramando violência e forjando mentiras.3 Qualquer edificação tem de ser arquitectada com inteligência, e é por meio de planos bem estudados que ela se funda e se faz. E é assim, por meio do conhecimento, que se pode enriquecer com coisas preciosas e agradáveis.5 Uma pessoa com bom senso e sabedoria tem muita força. Uma pessoa inteligente, com uma rica experiência da vida, redobra a sua própria força natural. Pois é justamente com essa sabedoria que se faz a táctica da guerra, mais do que com a força. E a vitória é em geral para os que lutaram tendo chefes inteligentes e generais bons conselheiros.7 A sabedoria é coisa demasiado inacessível para os loucos. Nas assembleias serão incapazes de abrir a boca.8 Quem está sempre a planear o mal fica conhecido como malfeitor.9 Os pensamentos das pessoas rebeldes são sempre maus, e o que despreza a verdade é a pior praga para a humanidade.10 Se te mostrares fraco quando chegam as angústias, é porque a tua energia é realmente pouca!11 Faz tudo para livrares os que estão condenados à morte, não fiques indiferente perante o seu destino. Não fujas às responsabilidades dizendo: Mas eu não sabia de nada! Deus, que conhece os corações, não saberá bem o que se passa no teu? Não dará Deus a cada um segundo as suas obras?13 Come mel, meu filho, porque é um bom alimento e doce ao paladar. Pois assim é também a sabedoria para a tua alma. Se te encheres dela, terás um futuro feliz diante de ti, e as tuas esperanças se realizarão.15 Não espies a morada do justo, ó homem perverso! Deixa-o em paz! Sabes bem que um justo, ainda que o faças cair sete vezes, de todas elas se levantará; mas tu, basta caíres uma vez para ficares liquidado.17 Não te alegres com a queda do teu inimigo, nem quando vier a ficar em apuros, pois o Senhor, ao verificar a tua atitude, certamente te desaprova, e até é capaz de deixar de o castigar a ele.19 Não tenhas inveja da aparente boa sorte que por vezes parece que têm os malfeitores. Não te preocupes com isso. Porque para os pecadores não há futuro de paz; a sua lâmpada apagar-se-á.21 Respeita Deus, meu filho, e ama-o. Honra o chefe da tua nação e nunca te associes com rebeldes, porque de repente serás arrastado com eles para a ruína. E depois? Onde é que tudo isto vai acabar?23 Eis mais alguns provérbios dos sábios: Não está certo num tribunal fazer-se acepção de pessoas, julgar uns diferentemente doutros, segundo a sua categoria social.24 Um juiz que declare inocente um malfeitor será condenado pela sociedade e repudiado pela nação. Mas quem o condenar será louvado e receberá bênçãos.26 É uma honra e uma prova de simpatia o receber-se respostas francas e honestas.27 Planeia correctamente as tuas iniciativas; assegura-te de que não te vai faltar nada antes de empreender seja o que for na tua vida.28 Não testemunhes sem motivo contra o teu próximo. Porque havias de mentir contra ele, se está inocente? Não digas: Vou aproveitar para ajustar contas com ele. Há-de pagar-me tudo o que me fez!30 Passei pelo campo dum preguiçoso, um indivíduo verdadeiramente sem juízo, e vi-o coberto de mato, e de espinhos e cardos; e a cercadura derribada. Perante isto, fiquei a pensar e tirei para mim esta lição: A fazer mais uma soneca agora, descansando mais um bom pedaço daqui a pouco, relaxando-se com os braços cruzados um bocado mais tarde, assim é que a pobreza surpreende uma pessoa, sem se dar por isso, como o assalto dum ladrão, como o ataque dum homem violento.

1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.3 Through wisdom is a house built; and by understanding it is established:4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.5 A wise man is strong; and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counselors there is safety.7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.10 If thou faintest in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.11 If thou forbearest to deliver them that are drawn to death, and those that are ready to be slain;12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and will not he render to every man according to his works?13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honey-comb, which is sweet to thy taste:14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; destroy not his resting-place:16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.17 Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth:18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked;20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be extinguished.21 My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.24 He that saith to the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thy house.28 Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;31 And lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face of it, and its stone wall was broken down.32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:34 So shall thy poverty come as one that traveleth; and thy want as an armed man.
