1 Se gostas de aprender, terás de aceitar ser ensinado e corrigido. Recusar a repreensão e a crítica é prova de estupidez.2 Os que seguem o bem alcançam o favor de Deus, e os que têm uma mente perversa serão antes condenados por ele.3 A maldade nunca traz consigo um verdadeiro sucesso para ninguém. Os que seguem Deus, esses sim, estarão bem fundamentados na vida.4 Uma mulher virtuosa é motivo de alegria para o seu marido; mas a que procede vergonhosamente tira-lhe a força.5 A mente duma pessoa de bem está cheia de pensamentos correctos, mas a dos que se afastam de Deus só têm é mentira e falsidade lá dentro.6 A gente má, quando fala, é para acusar e armar ciladas; mas os rectos saberão defender-se.7 Os maus serão abatidos e desaparecerão, mas a casa dos justos permanecerá firme.8 Cada um será louvado pelo bom senso de que dá provas; mas quem tem uma mente pervertida encontrará o desprezo do seu semelhante.9 É preferível aparentar um ar um tanto mais rude e ter em casa o suficiente para comer, do que andar muito aprumado e elegante mas passar fome!10 As pessoas de bem preocupam-se até com a saúde dos seus animais, mas a gente má, mesmo quando pretende fazer misericórdia, torna-se cruel.11 O trabalho feito com aplicação e esforço conduz à prosperidade. Só quem não tem realmente juízo nenhum se dá à ociosidade.12 Os maus têm inveja uns dos outros, enquanto que os justos desejam, no fundo de si mesmos, o bem do seu semelhante.13 O ímpio é apanhado pela sua fala pecadora; a honestidade é a melhor defesa dos que seguem a justiça.14 O falar a verdade dá às pessoas uma grande satisfação íntima; o trabalho honesto virá sempre a recompensar quem o faz.15 Os tolos pensam que nunca precisam de conselhos, mas os que têm verdadeiro entendimento sabem ouvir a opinião dos outros.16 Os loucos são desequilibrados e precipitados; os que têm bom senso sabem manter a cabeça fria e dominarem-se mesmo quando os insultam.17 Quem fala verdade põe em evidência a justiça; uma pessoa falsa só saberá revelar mentira e engano.18 Há gente cujas palavras ferem como pontas de espada, enquanto que a fala dos que têm sabedoria é como se desse saúde aos outros.19 A verdade aguenta, inalterável, a prova do tempo. A mentira não dura muito que não seja descoberta!20 Engano é tudo o que há no coração dos que só se ocupam em maquinar o mal. Mas há alegria transbordante na vida dos que procuram construir a paz.21 Nenhum agravo sobreviverá ao justo, mas os maus vivem em constante inquietação.22 O Senhor tem todo o prazer nos que cumprem o que prometem, mas repudia em absoluto os que não agem assim.23 Uma pessoa prudente revela o que sabe com moderação e equilíbrio, mas os loucos lançam aos quatro ventos os seus disparates.24 Quem trabalha aplicadamente ganhará qualidades para vir a conduzir os outros. Os preguiçosos nunca terão sucesso na vida.25 As preocupações tornam-se um peso grande no coração das pessoas. Nessas alturas, uma palavra amiga de apoio é capaz de fazer maravilhas!26 Um indivíduo sensato pede conselho aos seus amigos; os outros precipitam-se de cabeça nas situações, e deitam tudo a perder.27 O preguiçoso não chega sequer a assar a presa que caçou. Aquele que é diligente sabe tirar, a seu tempo, o devido proveito do que alcança.28 O caminho da justiça conduz à vida. Nele não há que ter medo da morte!

1 Whoever loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.2 A good man obtaineth favor from the LORD: but a man of wicked devices he will condemn.3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.5 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.9 He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoreth himself, and is destitute of bread.10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.11 He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.13 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered to him.15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth to counsel is wise.16 A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.17 He that speaketh truth showeth forth righteousness: but a false witness, deceit.18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counselors of peace is joy.21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.25 Heaviness in the heart of man depresseth it: but a good word maketh it glad.26 The righteous is more excellent than his neighbor: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.28 In the way of righteousness is life; and in the path of it there is no death.
