1 Se for preciso escolher, que se escolha antes uma boa reputação do que riquezas; vale mais ser-se estimado do que ter ouro e dinheiro.2 Afinal, tanto o rico como o pobre têm a mesma origem: ambos são criaturas de Deus.3 As pessoas prudentes prevêem o mal e procuram evitá-lo; mas os tolos continuam por diante e vêm a sofrer as consequências.4 A verdadeira humildade, e o respeitar Deus abrem às pessoas as portas das riquezas, da honra e duma longa vida.5 Os caminhos por que andam os maus estão cheios de espinhos e de armadilhas. Quem tem amor à sua própria alma afasta-se para longe deles.6 Ensina à criança o caminho por onde deve andar, e quando for velho ainda continuará a andar por ele.7 Os ricos dominam os pobres; assim também quem pede emprestado fica na dependência de quem lhe empresta.8 Quem semear perversidade recolherá males. As suas armas de violência se encravarão.9 Felizes são os que recebem os pobres com bondade; serão abençoados porque repartiram com eles o seu próprio prato.10 Manda embora o que despreza Deus, e acabar-se-ão as discussões e os insultos.11 Aquele que dá valor a um coração puro e cujas falas são sensatas, terá por seu amigo o rei.12 Os olhos do Senhor velam sobre aquele que tem sabedoria, mas contraria os pensamentos do pecador.13 Os preguiçosos inventam muitas desculpas: Não posso ir trabalhar. Pode haver um leão lá fora e ainda me arrisco a morrer., dizem eles!14 A boca das mulheres de má vida é como uma cova profunda. Caem nela os que Deus reprova.15 A insensatez é uma característica naturalmente ligada ao coração dos meninos. Mas a disciplina e a correcção afastará deles esse mal.16 Quem oprime o pobre para poder enriquecer ou para agradar aos ricos, acabará na pobreza.17 Ouve atentamente, escuta as palavras dos sábios e consagra o teu coração a estudar a minha experiência. Verás como é bom guardá-las no íntimo e aplicá-las a tudo o que disseres, para que a tua confiança esteja posta no Senhor. É por isso que te faço saber agora todas estas coisas, a ti, pessoalmente.20 Não é verdade que te tenho escrito já coisas excelentes referentes ao conhecimento e à experiência da vida? E se o fiz foi para te dar a certeza da verdade, e para que possas responder com essa mesma verdade a quem vier pedir-te conselhos.22 Não explores o pobre pelo facto de não ter defesa, nem oprimas os que vivem aflitos. Porque o Senhor é a favor deles e perante a justiça defenderá a sua causa, e a quem lhes rouba a vida será tirada a vida!24 Não andes com gente desordeira, nem acompanhes pessoas violentas, para não vires a aprender os seus modos, arriscando-te a perderes a tua alma.26 Não sejas dos que, com um simples aperto de mão, se deixam ficar por fiadores de dívidas alheias. Se tu próprio não tens com que pagar, porque ficarias sujeito a que te venham tirar até a cama debaixo de ti?28 Não alteres os marcos que limitam as terras e que já os teus antepassados fixaram.29 Tens visto certamente pessoas que trabalham diligentemente: serão bem sucedidas, os governantes dar-lhe-ão responsabilidades e não passarão despercebidas.

1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall end; yes, strife and reproach shall cease.11 He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.12 The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred by the LORD shall fall therein.15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.17 Bow down thy ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart to my knowledge.18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keepest them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send to thee?22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
